The Strid Vale is a sparsely wooded region on the northern bank of the Strid River, in the West Weald of Cyrodiil. The Strid Vale is generally understood to encompass the land between Kvatch and Skingrad, including the historical town of Ostumir.[1][2] At its greatest extent, the Strid Vale is said to stretch from Kvatch to Vlastarus.[3] The region is bisected by the Gold Road, and is home to vineyards and Imperial estates.[4][5]
History[edit]
During the time of the Ayleid Empire, the city-state of Miscarcand was one of the most powerful in western Cyrod. Miscarcand recognized Alessia as Empress following the Alessian Slave Rebellion, but the city was gradually abandoned by its people. The Ayleids began to depart in small bands, fleeing across the Strid to nearby Valenwood.[6]
Starting around 2E 572, the lands between Kvatch and Skingrad became all but abandoned by the local Imperials after the troubles of the Colovian Revolt.[1]
In 2E 582, the Recollection used the destructive power of corrupted Greenspeaker seeds, known as Wildburn seeds, to replace the Strid Vale's typical vegetation with a jungle. Named Dawnwood by King Nantharion, this new forest resembled the Valenwood on the other side of the Strid and was swiftly colonized by Bosmer from the city of Silvenar. The use of Wildburn seeds also had caused the creation of a corrupted area known as "the Wildburn" on its outskirts. King Nantharion oversaw the settlement of Vashabar and Hoperoot and attempted to expand the forest even further. His plan to destroy Skingrad and cover the entire West Weald in jungle was ended when he was killed within the ruins of Miscarcand that same year.[7] Following Nantharion's death, Count Calantius of Skingrad entered into talks with Greenspeaker Darolith of Vashabar. The count hoped to secure a treaty of cooperation, granting Vashabar land rights and trade agreements with Skingrad and the rest of the West Weald. Securing this alliance required the count to persuade certain nobles and landowners to part with abandoned estates they could no longer return to by purchasing their land interest.[5]
The Dawnwood had completely disappeared by 3E 433, with the Strid Vale's flora and fauna resembling the rest of the West Weald at the time.[8]
