On the level 5 saving bug[edit]

When I just played without dying, my save file (called "SAVETREE.DAT") usually increased by 2-3 kB, sometimes nothing at all. But when I died (thus quit to DOS) and reloaded a save file from level 5, or if I just turned off Dosbox and launched it again and loaded a save file from the level, the file size increased with 58 kB the first time I saved during that session (a session as in every time I reload the save after relaunching the game due to dying or quitting Dosbox), and it's always 58 kB! I played the level and saved before every single encounter (which is a LOT), so I could reload before every time I knew I was going to die, and ended up with a file size of 1960 kB just before entering the portal to level 6. Since the file size was 823 kB in the beginning of the level, this means I probably saved around 400 times (I explored the whole level and saved pretty much all the time). But there was no problem with Dosbox or my computer not being able to handle it - it crashed two times because of some weird error but I just reloaded and continued. So the conclusion is that you probably don't have to worry as long as you always reload before dying. And keep in mind to make another hard save (saving in other slot and continuing there) after every quest object or so, so you'll always have backup files. I imagine it was a more serious problem when the computers were limited to 640K... rpeh •TCE 14:50, 25 October 2011 (UTC)
Haha, I guess so. But doesn't it apply to Dosbox too? Dosbox doesn't have unlimited emulated RAM either, does it? I mean, it requires a pretty beast computer to emulate a good DOS machine from 1997. And even if it didn't crash (except for two times), the loading times were really slow. SwedishBerzerker at youtube.com 07:10, 26 October 2011 (UTC)
