Lore:Ornaug
Ornaugs are marine reptiles native to the reefs and littorals of the western Abecean Sea. These creatures are canine in appearance, with a crocodilian jaw and the smooth scales of a serpent. Although similar appearance to a fish, ornaugs are land-dwelling reptiles with highly developed lungs. They possess several marine adaptations, including nictitating membranes to protect their eyes in the water, nostrils that close to remain watertight, and fins to aid in swimming. Although they are fast swimmers, ornaugs lack hind flippers and are much faster on land. They do not hunt in water, but instead scavenge the shores.
Ornaugs can often be seen leaping from the water, and use their swimming ability to reach the littoral regions of new reefs and islands. Due to a lack of blubber, ornaugs have poor insulation and their range is therefore restricted to warm seas and shallows. Wild ornaugs are dangerous and will attack travelers if confronted. They are a common sight along the coasts of the Systres Archipelago.[1][2]
Breeds and Uses[edit]
Ornaugs can be domesticated and used as mounts. Packs of ornaugs native to Amenos are known to be tamed and trained by prisoners trapped on the island,[3] and by the Maormer.[4] The Buoyant Armigers have even been known to use imported Ornaugs mounts on occasion.[5]
The Reefstrider Ornaug of High Isle is a breed noted for its sparkling blue scales, making it sought after by nobles[6] Extensive proximity to a Reefstrider is thought to cause unusual luminescent markings known as Brineglow to appear on the rider.[7] The Shallowstalker Ornaug has shimmering blue and purple scales that mimic the coral shallows around Galen.[8] The Altered Ornaug is the result of a collaboration between Shad Astula students and Mages Guild apprentices, there are rumors that it may be slightly psychic, responding to its rider's commands almost before they're uttered aloud.[9]
Ornaug meat is inedible unless prepared correctly. Seared ornaug filet is a specialty of the Bretons of High Isle, who prepare the meat by rubbing it in garlic and pepper before searing it over a volcanic vent.[10]
