Astrid was a Nord assassin, and the leader of the last remaining Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary in Tamriel, based in Skyrim. She was also the wife of fellow assassin and former Companion, Arnbjorn. In 4E 201, after the Last Dragonborn murdered Grelod the Kind on behalf of Aventus Aretino who thought the Dragonborn was a member of the Dark Brotherhood, Astrid kidnapped the Dragonborn in their sleep, and took them to an abandoned shack in Hjaalmarch, east of Solitude. There, she ordered them to kill one of the three captives who were marked for death by the Brotherhood, without telling them who the real target was.[1]

Conflicting reports debate what happened after this encounter. Some reports claim that the Dragonborn killed Astrid and then destroyed the Dark Brotherhood.[2] However, other reports claim that after slaying one or more of the captives, Astrid welcomed the Dragonborn into the Dark Brotherhood.[3]

If the Dragonborn joined the Brotherhood, Astrid would later meet Cicero, who brought the Night Mother, and after becoming suspicious of Cicero, Astrid ordered the Dragonborn to spy on him, an act that would cause the Dragonborn to hear the Night Mother's voice, making them the new Listener.[4] After the Night Mother instructed the Dragonborn to meet Amaund Motierre, Astrid would need time to think on the matter, before eventually giving into curiosity and ordering the Dragonborn to meet Amaund. Astrid was excited to discover that Amaund wanted Emperor Titus Mede II assassinated.[5] Astrid instructed the Dragonborn to assassinate the Emperor's cousin, Vittoria Vici, at her wedding, forcing the Emperor to journey to Skyrim.[6] Afterwards, Astrid instructed the Dragonborn to kill a Penitus Oculatus agent, Gaius Maro, son of the Penitus Oculatus' leader Commander Maro, and incriminate him with a letter.[7]

Astrid later tasked the Dragonborn to hunt down Cicero after he attacked her and injured multiple family members. It is unknown if the Dragonborn spared him.[8] Later on, Astrid tasked the Dragonborn with killing the Gourmet, a famous chef and author of the book Uncommon Taste in the hopes of impersonating them to get close to the Emperor.[9] After the plan to assassinate the Emperor backfired, Commander Maro cornered the Dragonborn and told them that Astrid cut a deal with him: Trade the Dragonborn's life in order to spare the rest of the Brotherhood. However, Maro went back on that promise due to the fact the Brotherhood was responsible for killing his son, and revealed that he had already sent a detachment of Penitus Oculatus to wipe out the Brotherhood.[10] As the Dragonborn arrived at the Sanctuary, they discovered that most of the Brotherhood had already been wiped out. After eliminating all the Penitus Oculatus agents, they took shelter in the Night Mother's coffin in order to escape an explosion caused by the fire burning down the Sanctuary. After everything died down, they found Astrid in the Sanctuary. However, Astrid was near-death, revealing to the Dragonborn that she used her own body as an offering in the Black Sacrament, and set a contract on herself, wanting to be put out of her misery. the Dragonborn agreed to the contract, killing Astrid.[11]
