Rimmen Palace
"Aneshi has always been a custodian of one ancient site or another. Once it was the Rimmen Palace, now it is this unassuming shrine. After Euraxia had my beloved Zaima killed, this one sought peace. Aneshi found it here." —Aneshi the Shrine Keeper[1]

Aneshi was a Khajiit scholar and custodian who served as the Castellan of Rimmen Palace during the rule of King Hemakar and Queen Numara. Later, he became the Keeper of the Shrine of Khunzar-ri, a revered Khajiiti hero.[1] He was an expert on all the heroes and gods of the Khajiiti pantheon.[2] As a keeper of records, Aneshi transcribed many legends and tales associated with Khunzar-ri and held the title of Keeper of Legends for the 16 Kingdoms.[3][4]

History[edit]

The Frostfall Coup
The spirit of Khunzar-ri

Little is known of Aneshi's past. At some point, he married Zaima,[1] and became the castellan of Rimmen Palace, serving under King Hemakar.[5] While serving as castellan, he oversaw the palace operations and assumed responsibility for the training and education of Princess Khamira,[2] who was born in 2E 563.[2][6] His wife served as the princess's governess.[2] He had extensive knowledge of the palace and survived Euraxia Tharn's conquest and the Frostfall Coup.[5] In 2E 576,[6] this event led to the purge of the royal family.[5] Both he and his wife managed to survive the purge of the palace, staying close to the castle for the time being. His wife acted as a spy and passed along information until the Euraxians caught her and killed her in the palace courtyard. Following Zaima's capture and execution, Aneshi fleed the city.[1] Unknown to him, Princess Khamira managed to survive unlike her parents and siblings. She kept this information secret and refrained from contacting him, hoping it would ensure his safety.[2]

After losing his wife, he sought peace. He traveled south of the city to restore the ancient shrine of Khunzar-ri, which brought him the solace he sought after his beloved's passing. When he arrived, it wasn't a shrine yet—just tumbled walls and crumbling ruins. Aneshi worked hard to preserve the site and restore it to its former glory. As of 2E 582, he still had much work to do in that regard. Despite this, the shrine was visited by pilgrims, Moon-Singers, and traders alike, many came to pay homage to the shrine.[1] He transcribed many tales of the legendary hero. Among the known ones were: Khunzar-ri and the Lost Alfiq,[3] Khunzar-ri: Origin,[7] as well as Khunzar-ri: Tales,[4] including tomes such as Khunzar-ri and the Twelve Ogres,[8] and One of the Times Anequina Saved Khunzar-ri.[9]

As of that year, he was already an elderly individual. During the rebellion of the Khajiit against Euraxia's terror, Lord Gharesh-ri, the Speaker of the Mane, sent the rightful heir to the throne of Anequina, Khamira, whom Aneshi knew personally from her childhood years, along with an agent to obtain information on how to access the palace grounds.[5] He provided the aid and information they needed, instructing them to enter the palace through the crypts to avoid attracting attention. A forgotten passage in the crypts led to the royal kitchens. He wrote down directions to the location of his hidden master key,[1][10][11] which opened a door in the sewer under the palace that led to the crypts.[1][12] He also spoke briefly with Khamira in private before the mission, discussing the old king, Zaima, and life in the palace.[1][2] His assistance was instrumental to the mission, as it aided Abnur Tharn, Khamira and the agent's infiltration of the castle, contributing to the eventual death of Euraxia and the restoration of the Khajiit monarchy.[13][14]
