Battle of Red Mountain[edit]

Hey. So this image isn't depicting the Battle of Red Mountain, and shouldn't be used on all these pages on that topic. It's just a sort of assumption folk have made, since there are Nords and Dark Elves fighting in front of what looks like a volcano. However, the image was made during Daggerfall's development for the game's intro sequence, where it is seen partially cropped, with the narrator supplying the context that the provinces of Tamriel are infighting and rebelling. This would imply that this battle, wherever it is taking place, is contemporary to the events of Daggerfall. During Daggerfall's development the Battle of Red Mountain lore was not yet invented, and why the intro would feature the battle retroactively makes little sense. Not to mention that there are clearly Dark Elves in the image and not Chimer fighting. The only pretext for it might having anything to do with the new Morrowind lore was its use as clip art for the ElderScrolls.com codex about Morrowind, which featured all recycled art from Daggerfall's intro, slotted into alternative contexts than their original presentation. I'd argue the context of the games themselves are on a much higher tier than what was thrown onto a website for a bit of eye candy. Though, I think it would be okay to presume this is in fact depicting Red Mountain given the context of it being next to text mentioning it, but even that's rather shaky.

Bottom line. I think the image should be taken off all these current pages, put on the Third Era Wars page, Dunmer page, and maybe the Red Mountain page. Cheers TheRockWithAMedicineCupOnHisHead (talk) 14:33, 13 March 2023 (UTC)

It's a fair point. I think the assumption that this image depicts the Battle of Red Mountain was a fair one to make in the absence of the above context, but the presence of Dark Elves is definitely a point against that. What's the source for the cut "provinces of Tamriel are infighting and rebelling" Daggerfall narration? —Legoless (talk) 15:10, 13 March 2023 (UTC)
Yeah sure! So, the context comes from the very first game cutscene, which is in the final game: “Four hundred years after Tiber Septim's reign, the beginning will meet the end, and the bloody circle will close in the Empire of Tamriel. The unworthy heirs of the Septim Dynasty have allowed the bonds of the Empire to weaken and crack. Uriel Septim VII cannot repair what his ancestors ignored. The provinces fight among themselves like neglected children, drunk with rebellion, and one indomitable power hides itself, but not forever.” -TheRockWithAMedicineCupOnHisHead (talk) 15:36, 13 March 2023 (UTC)
