Hello![edit]

Hireling Correspondence[edit]

Hi Szymon, thanks for your interest, but adding all the correspondence from all the hirelings to those pages is needless, and makes those pages unwieldy and hard to be of use. If we did decide to add the correspondence, we would transclude the dialogue from each page to avoid the need to make sure multiple difficult pages were correctly written, and it would save the tens of thousands of bytes needed to load the hireling pages that you are making. I am removing them all for now. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 10:37, 9 October 2017 (UTC)

Actually I wanted to remove the dialogue from particular pages in Online-People and compile it under hireling pages. As it currently is, following the whole storyline for a particular hireling is somewhat hard, as the dialogues are often interspersed, cf. Veesk-Olan and Uravin Dres or Abnab and Ezdab. But I am not going to insist on this change, if more experienced users consider it unnecessary. However, I'd like to point out that in last few months I was the only person to continue updating the hireling pages with new messages. Szymon (talk) 11:01, 9 October 2017 (UTC)
Without the correspondence the individual pages would probably end up as redirects to the hireling page. I have never really paid attention to the content of the correspondence in terms of story or order, but it is fairly easy to transclude them (have them display on both pages but editable only on one), as long as there is not too much overlap, if that is something that would be more suitable (we could even transclude and hide it under a header to be clicked to save the length of the page as well as the data size). It would even be possible to just have the interconnected content appear just on those pages. If you feel strongly enough about it you can bring it to the Community Portal. Yes, making the individual pages redirect to the hireling pages is what I had in mind. Could you explain (or better, point me to an example) how transclusion should work? Szymon (talk) 12:27, 9 October 2017 (UTC)
It's easiest to see on our book pages. Take Lore:The Adabal-a, then look at Online:The Adabal-a. The lore version contains almost 4000 characters, while the ESO version contains only 400 or so, despite them looking almost identical and displaying roughly the same text. Now in this case we have some differences between the Oblivion, Skyrim, and ESO versions, so there are other things at work to make them display the right content on the right pages, but this wouldn't be a problem with the hireling dialogue. Please have a look at Hireling (Enchanting) and tell me if it is now more acceptable. Szymon (talk) 14:50, 12 October 2017 (UTC)
In a word, no. You are still duplicating the correspondence by putting it all on the subpage. The idea is to transclude it directly from the character pages, not duplicate it to another page and then transclude it. I do see the complications involved with the mixed-up order of who sends when. A good example of how to solve this can be seen on the 2920 series of books. The lore version is 12 volumes, but the ESO version is 28, and doesn't split them evenly (ie an ESO volume takes words from two lore volumes). The coding is fairly simple once you get the hang of it, but putting it all together will be more difficult. Using a subpage to put the table together and then tanscluding that may actually be a good idea given the projected complexity of it. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 15:42, 12 October 2017 (UTC)
Now there is no duplication and everything is as tidy as I could make it. Szymon (talk) 11:01, 13 October 2017 (UTC)

() For now. It's only been 3 days since you asked on the community portal, in a very old topic. I won't touch anything until there are more contributions to the topic. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 13:58, 13 October 2017 (UTC)

Silencer, if you think Szymon does not understand what you are saying, you could maybe make a small example page for him. From what I have seen, Szymon is doing a tremendous job in categorizing the hireling dialogue, so it would be nice if he could continue what he is doing now. --Ilaro (talk) 07:28, 14 October 2017 (UTC)
I think Szymon knows what I want, my point is that it may not be what the community wants as it basically makes all the character pages defunct. Szymon knows that part too, which is why he removed the correspondence from their pages. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 09:18, 14 October 2017 (UTC)
