Just a note...[edit]

We're missing you on the IRC! --Hoggwild5 00:17, 31 October 2006 (EST)

Hehe, I'm sorry. I've just been busy lately irl. I should be on more :) *coughthat'swhatitelldaveallthetimecough* --Aristeo 12:27, 2 November 2006 (EST)

Account restrictions[edit]

I just looked into your suggestion that new accounts should have some restrictions placed on them. There is actually a configuration setting that causes newly created accounts to not have the privileges of registered accounts until some amount of time has passed. So adding the setting:

$wgAutoConfirmAge = 3600*96;

would set a 96-hour waiting period; by default this parameter is set to 0.

Also, it looks like it's possible to make it so that unregistered users can not create new pages. By default there are two settings:

$wgGroupPermissions['*'    ]['createpage']      = true;
$wgGroupPermissions['*'    ]['createtalk']      = true;

which I understand to mean that all visitors to the site are allowed to create both regular pages and talk pages. If those lines are deleted/commented out, then only logged in users should be able to create pages.

It's not clear to me at the moment how these settings interact. It seems likely that with both of these settings enabled, a new user would not be able to even create a user page until 96 hours have passed.

These edits would need to be done by Daveh to the site's LocalSettings.php file. The questions to answer first are: how long of a waiting period do we want? Do we want to restrict all page creation for IP addresses, or do we want to allow IP addresses to still create talk pages? And if we were to enable some of these changes, there are probably modifications we should make to some of the notification screens that appear to make it clear to new users that their accounts do not yet have full privileges. --Nephele 16:43, 31 October 2006 (EST)

Changing the "Hey, you just created an account!" notification screen is pretty easy, and I did it before. As for the creation of pages, I feel that new users should be allowed to create talk pages, just not regular pages. I have not seen any new talk pages created anonymously that needed to be deleted, but most if not all of the new articles created by IPs have needed to be deleted. Also, I think preventing users from making user pages right away would actually be a good idea, as it allows the ranking system to be more effective. --Aristeo 16:56, 31 October 2006 (EST)
Yep, I agree. I think preventing talk pages from being created could be more harmful than useful (it could prevent anonymous users from posting questions on the talk page, and force unwanted questions to be added to the main page). And not being able to create a new user page right away would ensure that new users show up as red names in recent changes for the first few days (and might also discourage some of the new users whose main interest for the first week seems to be in setting up their user page). --Nephele 17:01, 31 October 2006 (EST)
It would also be nice if there were some way to make it so that drastic edits of existing pages (the most common being page-blanks, like the rascal we saw here this morning) are not possible for new or IP accounts. Wikipedia has filters to prevent new or anonymous editors from just coming in and blanking pages. I think if we're going to allow these anonymous editors, we should have some sort of similar protection in place. (Especially since there's currently only 2 active admins with the power to block them.) Page blanking (except within one's one user space, such as your sandboxes) is almost never acceptable behavior on this site, (if you want to delete a page, there are several legitimate channels to do so - blanking is not the answer) so I think it would be reasonable to suggest that blanking a page might be disallowed for everyone, but particularly new accounts and IP editors, as they're the most likely to just be here to cause trouble. --TheRealLurlock 17:05, 31 October 2006 (EST)
Not yet, we don't need to do anything drastic until drastic measures are necessary. Which they aren't. The problem right now is that both Nephele and I had to be inactive for a period for various reasons, and these periods conflicted each other. Having another admin may fix the problem, but imposing too many technical limitations is just asking for trouble. --Aristeo 17:10, 31 October 2006 (EST)
Okay, though in the meantime, you might consider semi-protecting those pages that would be likely targets for this type of an attack. There's almost nothing that needs to be editted anymore on all of the games' main pages. Since they're the most prominent, they're also the most prone to vandalism. Do you think it would be unreasonable to ask that Oblivion:Oblivion and the like get semi-protection? (Also, you can do that now, while a pageblank-filter would require a Daveh installation.) I don't expect that the jerk from this morning will be back, but as it is, I can't see any reason NOT to semi-protect those main pages. --TheRealLurlock 17:30, 31 October 2006 (EST)

More Protected Pages[edit]

Besides Oblivion:Oblivion, what exactly do you want semi-protected? --Aristeo 17:32, 31 October 2006 (EST)

All the main pages linked from the sidebar, I think, should be semi-protected. Maybe not Community Portal, because that might defeat the purpose of that page. But everything in the Sections box at least. They're not likely to need much changing any time soon, and leaving them open for anonymous editors makes them vulnerable. --TheRealLurlock 18:53, 31 October 2006 (EST)
I semi-protected Oblivion:Oblivion, making it the first page to be both semi-protected and protected against moves. This was an easy choice to make since it is the most viewed and most vandalized page on the wiki. I may do the same thing to Morrowind:Morrowind if it becomes a problem, but I don't see anything to worry about yet. --Aristeo 12:34, 2 November 2006 (EST)

Any news?[edit]

Hi Aristeo!

Any news on moving my guide? Best regards --Magnusri 15:33, 2 November 2006 (EST)

I'm going to copy edit the whole thing, then move it to Oblivion:End Game Optimizing. --Aristeo 20:13, 2 November 2006 (EST)
Done. --Aristeo 22:00, 2 November 2006 (EST)

The ElderTomes[edit]

Aristeo,

You asked about my site The ElderTomes, and yes the URL sadly doesn't work at the moment (the domain is still mine, but the site host changed and I haven't got in contact with RavenSky for the new information.) You can still access it at this hyperlink. So you can update and do what you will with it. Though, I'm not quite exactly sure why you didn't ask me this over IRC! - User:Magnus - November 5, 2006 20:00 (-4:00GMT)

It seems cooler and more official like over the wiki. Thanks! --Aristeo | Talk 22:54, 5 November 2006 (EST)

Since your cookie jar was so full...[edit]

I though you might enjoy a cup of green tea on me.

Green tea moved to cookie jar. It's in a thermos, don't worry, no crumbs will infiltrate the green tea and spoil it. ;)

External Links in Sidebar[edit]

Hi, do you know how to put an external link in the navigation bar? This is for my own wiki, and the FAQ on mediawiki isn't much help for this. I'm trying to link to my forum (on another site) from my navigation bar, but I don't have my own domain for either. --WerdnanoslenTalk 17:03, 10 November 2006 (EST)

Assuming that you have administrative privileges, you will want to edit the MediaWiki:Sidebar article on the wiki. Our file shows some examples of both internal links and external links. --Aristeo | Talk 17:09, 10 November 2006 (EST)
I've just tried how the UESP has it set up, but when I use the link, it tells me --error: link target missing--. And yes, I'm an admin on my site. --WerdnanoslenTalk 18:00, 10 November 2006 (EST)
Is your site setup on Wikia? --Aristeo | Talk 18:21, 10 November 2006 (EST)
Yes
Then I recommend you go to Wikia.com and speak with the staff there on their help desk. I know Wikia is different technically from UESP, so you may want to speak with them instead of me. I wish I could help more. --Aristeo | Talk 19:07, 10 November 2006 (EST)
That's fine, thanks anyway. : ) --WerdnanoslenTalk 21:42, 10 November 2006 (EST)

Question on Harluns Watch[edit]

Hi i have oblivion for 360 and i am at the Harluns watch level and those bodies on the green marker never appear. I have restarted the mission several times going directly to the green marker before killing any trolls and then killing all the trolls and the bodies still do not appear so i can pass the level. Is there anything i can do? Thanks — Unsigned comment by Yamus04 (talkcontribs)

I'm not sure. Your best bet is to go to our reference desk to ask that question, or perhaps the official forums will help since it's more of a technical problem. --Aristeo | Talk 14:45, 11 November 2006 (EST)

Results[edit]

Results, Results, Results, Results --Hoggwild5 15:54, 12 November 2006 (EST)

Oh, yea, and "this one time at band camp..."
You're on notice! --Aristeo | Talk 17:15, 12 November 2006 (EST)

Banned from the IRC[edit]

I tried to log into IRC and got a message that I have been banned. Whassup?--Hoggwild5 12:29, 14 November 2006 (EST)

Remember when I was showing you examples of how to ban usernames? It looks like I forgot to unban the example. You can come back in now. Sorry about that :| --Aristeo | Talk 13:13, 14 November 2006 (EST)

Morrowind Town Table[edit]

Hi, I noticed you've been playing with Template:Morrowind Town Table and I have to revert your changes, since it added a blank lines at the bottom of the transport section for those locations without Guild Guide or Silt Strider. What are you trying to fix? --DrPhoton 03:38, 15 November 2006 (EST)

I just had a better look at the problem and found out what you were trying to fix: the indentation of some of the transport headings. Doing some research, it looks like this problem arises from the #if function not closing the bullet list properly. Even if I type

{{#if:{}|Boat:<br>
{}

}}Divine Intervention:<br>

in the template, the bullet list of Boat is not closed. Unfortunately, there seems to be no solution unless this is fixed in the php code (is there any update of the functions we can try?). --DrPhoton 04:00, 15 November 2006 (EST)

Here's an example of what's happening: http://www.uesp.net/w/index.php?title=User:Aristeo/Sandbox/4&oldid=68847 It's not the #if command, it's the output that everything is producing. --Aristeo | Talk 14:03, 15 November 2006 (EST)
Well, I still think there is a problem with the #if function. The following code is equivalent to the one above
heading 1
* item 1
* item 2
* item 3

heading 2
and produces
heading 1
  • item 1
  • item 2
  • item 3
heading 2
But putting all this in an #if clause
heading 2
produces

heading 1

  • item 1
  • item 2
  • item 3heading 2
Any ideas? --DrPhoton 03:25, 16 November 2006 (EST)
I think the problem in that case is that the "}}" marks are hooking onto the break. Moving them up one level should fix the problem:
heading 1
* item 1
* item 2
* item 3

heading 3
* item 1
* item 2
* item 3
When the contents of the if parser are included, it yields:
heading 1
  • item 1
  • item 2
  • item 3
heading 2
  • item 1
  • item 2
  • item 3
heading 3
  • item 1
  • item 2
  • item 3
When the contents of the if parser are not included, it yields:
heading 1
  • item 1
  • item 2
  • item 3
heading 3
  • item 1
  • item 2
  • item 3
I hope this works.. :) --Aristeo | Talk 13:20, 16 November 2006 (EST)

Thanks! I finally found a workaround in a different way. Check it out if you want. --DrPhoton 03:21, 17 November 2006 (EST)

RSS[edit]

According to your user page, you track all wiki edits with RSS. Gimme the feed! Or at least tell me where to get it. Thanks, Verin Sedai 21:04, 15 November 2006 (EST)

rss and atom. Enjoy! :D --Aristeo | Talk 21:10, 15 November 2006 (EST)

Redirect[edit]

I can't put redirect pages on UESP. This is probably intentional, but I dunno. Is it? If they aren't disabled, why doesn't it work?Verin Sedai 20:09, 16 November 2006 (EST)

The following is how to create a redirect:
#redirect Oblivion:Main Quest
The software is picky about redirects, and they have to be made in a certain way. For more information about creating redirects, see Wikipedia's Help:Redirect page.
P.S. I deleted the "King of Worms" page for you. If you accidently create any more pages, you can propose them for speedy deletion by typing in I accidently created this page. --Aristeo | Talk 20:19, 16 November 2006 (EST)

Table Heading Background[edit]

Hi, just a little suggestion, the backgorund of the headings would be nicer IMHO with this color #efefef. You can see the difference in Morrowind:House Hlaalu ;) --DrPhoton 15:02, 21 November 2006 (EST)

I can't tell with the laptop I'm using for Thanksgiving weekend. I'll talk to the others and see what they think. --Aristeo | Talk 19:11, 23 November 2006 (EST)

[edit]

I saw you uploaded the fixed version of Wiki.png, but it still shows the old logo up there. I refreshed my cache, but it's still there! I suspect it has to do with the removal of the stuff about Wiki.png from MediaWiki:Common.css, but I can't be sure. -- Xbolt 00:08, 27 November 2006 (EST)

Fixed! Try reloading your cache again. --Aristeo | Talk 00:20, 27 November 2006 (EST)
Sweet! Now I can fully enjoy the new skin! -- Xbolt 18:25, 27 November 2006 (EST)
I can still see the borders of the logo image. It may be that the colors or the paterns of the backgorund don't match exactly. To fix that, I've uploaded a logo with transparent background at Image:Wiki3.png. Have a look and try it out if you like. --DrPhoton 08:44, 28 November 2006 (EST)
Transparent PNGs do not work in IE6. I believe there is a hack to fix this which I'll look into. -- DaveH 08:47, 28 November 2006 (EST)
Oh, I didn't know, IE7 doesn't have that problem. Anyway, here are some possible fixes. --DrPhoton 14:29, 28 November 2006 (EST)
And here is another one. --DrPhoton 14:36, 28 November 2006 (EST)

Morrowind:Places:Place X[edit]

Can you delete the rest of these pages please? --DrPhoton 08:56, 29 November 2006 (EST)

I put them up for proposed deletion. If Nephele gives me the thumbs up in seven days, I'll delete them. --Aristeo | Talk 19:04, 30 November 2006 (EST)
