My Welcome Template: Simply the Most Hospitable, Like a Breath of Fresh Air, Dipped in Chocolate[edit]

Welcome![edit]

Hello NEWUSER! Welcome to UESPWiki.

We are glad to have you as a new member of the community here at UESP. Here are some links that may help you get started:

If you would like to spice up your userpage, take a look at the Userboxes page: a near complete list of userboxes, including a guide to making your own.

When you're editing, it's always a good idea to leave edit summaries to explain the changes you have made to a particular page, and remember to sign your talk page posts with four tildes ~~~~ (do not sign edits to articles). Also, the "show preview" button is a great way to proofread changes you make before saving (publishing) the page on the wiki. This reduces the total number of changes and helps our (patrollers check changes more efficiently).

While we have policies and guidelines to maintain the high standards of the wiki, we also encourage editors to jump right in and start adding to the wiki before learning them. It takes time to learn how things are done, and people will be happy to correct things for you if you do something that doesn't follow a standard. Except for deliberate rudeness, vandalism, spam, etc., we encourage you to "be bold" when adding to or revising our pages. In fact, that's our official policy.

Feel free to practice editing in the sandbox or discuss the games or the wiki in the forums or in our IRC chatroom. If you need any help, don't hesitate to contact me or one of our mentors. Have fun! --JR (talk) 03:50, 24 December 2012 (GMT)

Tentative Notes on Maul NPC[edit]

Maul watches the streets of Riften for the Thieves Guild and is the right hand man of Maven Black-Briar, the leader of the powerful Black-Briar family. Upon entering Riften through the main gate for the first time, he will warn you not to cause trouble there, and depending on your choices in speaking to him, will provide various kinds of information.

If you are carrying an Unusual Gem, and ..... following the default options in speaking to him will result in his pointing you to Skyrim:Vex at the Thieves Guild, and pressing him for information on the Thieves Guild will activate the quest No Stone Unturned.

He claims he left the Thieves Guild when it started going downhill, but he is technically still part of that faction.

His brother, Dirge, is also a member of the Thieves' Guild.

Should Maven be named Jarl when the Imperials claim the Rift hold, Maul becomes Maven's housecarl.

Tentative Work on Expanding Boethiah's Calling[edit]

Quick Walkthrough[edit]

  1. Read Boethiah's Proving.
  2. Make your way to the Sacellum of Boethiah. Once there, speak to the Priestess of Boethiah.
  3. Sacrifice a follower on the Altar of Sacrifice.
  4. Kill all the cult members.
  5. Go to Knifepoint Ridge and kill Boethiah's current champion

Detailed Walkthrough[edit]

Starting the Quest[edit]

Soon after you reach level 30, you will be attacked by a Boethiah cultist. Kill him, and take the book Boethiah's Proving from them. Reading the book will start the quest. Alternatively, once you reach level 30 you can travel to the Sacellum of Boethiah to start the quest (you can either talk to the Priestess of Boethia or kill every one of the cultists). There is also a copy of Boethiah's Proving in the Abandoned House in Markarth that can be found during The House of Horrors quest. Another copy also can be found in Septimus Signus's Outpost. Those books appear once you reach level 30.

The Shrine of Boethiah[edit]

First you will have to make your way to the Sacellum of Boethiah. Follow the road east from the Windhelm Stables up to Traitor's Post. Nearby is a road that leads into the mountains, up to the Sacellum. When you arrive at the Sacellum you will find two cultists fighting in a small arena. There are some more cultists and a Priestess of Boethiah watching them. Speak to the priestess. She will tell you that you need to prove that "your tongue can wield a lie".

The Sacrifice[edit]

The priestess will tell you that you need to gain someone's trust and then sacrifice them before Boethiah. She will give you the Blade of Sacrifice to make the sacrifice with. Lead any non-essential follower to the shrine and activate command mode (holding 'use' or via the "I need you to do something" conversation option). Highlight the pillar and you should see "Use the Pillar of sacrifice". Tell them to do this and they will move towards it and be pulled in and stuck to it. If the follower is essential, he will not trigger the pillar.

Kill the follower using any means (despite what the Priestess says, you do not have to use the Blade of Sacrifice) and Boethiah will use his or her body as a conduit to tell you and all of the cultists that she has a task for whoever is left standing after a battle to the death. This results in all the cultists attacking one another (and you).

If you have already killed all the followers of Boethia, she will then possess the corpse of the last follower you slew and the quest proceeds as normal.

The New Champion[edit]

After making the sacrifice and killing all the cultists, Boethiah will again use a body as a conduit (it may not be the same one) and tells you she needs a new champion. To become the new champion you must kill the old champion and his bandits at Knifepoint Ridge, northwest of Falkreath.

Despite Boethiah's order to kill them stealthily, being detected does not result in quest failure, or any other penalty. Nonetheless, most of the bandits inside the mine are busy with their backs to you and can be assassinated, and a few are standing in pools of flammable liquid that can be ignited with fire spells. Once you defeat Boethiah's Champion, you must equip the Ebony Mail. Boethiah will then speak to you one last time telling you that you are her new champion and that you should take the old champion's Ebony Mail as your reward.

Bugs[edit]

  • If you refuse the quest and kill the cultists or something happens to cause Boethiah's current body to enter combat mode (eg a dragon attack), she will be stuck in the same conversational loop repeating the line "You've gotten my attention mortal, that is most unwise" when approached. To get around this, kill all the cultists and priests. ?
  • This can be a pain if you want to continue doing radiant quests for the Companion leaders. If you use a Companion (one you've married or just as a standard follower), and sacrifice them at the Pillar, the game doesn't register them as "killed", and the radiant quests from the Companions will break. The follower DOES indeed die, the quest for Boethiah still proceeds as normal, but the Companion leaders don't acknowledge the death, and their speech is still, "Aren't you already running a job for (name)?". ?
  • If you kill the priestess before talking to her, the two current fighters will become unkillable and so the quest will become unfulfillable. ?
  • If you enter the menu or journal while the blurry "vision" effect is happening, it is possible for the effect to stay permanently. This visual effect happens when Boethiah possesses a corpse; either your sacrificed follower or one of her slain followers. Loading a previous save is the only fix. It cleared the blurry vision once sacrificed a follower. ?
  • On entering Knifepoint Mine, possibly due to having been there previously outside of the quest, you may be presented with a wall of Iron Ore blocking your path to the remaining bandits and the Boethiah Cultist, making the quest unable to be completed. The only known way around this is to look at the bottom left corner of the wall of Iron Ore, where you will be presented with the option to mine a Corundurum Vein. Mining this will pull you through the wall, allowing you to continue with the quest as intended. However this will only work once, so make sure you have completed everything before heading back up this path - as soon as you have walked through the location of the wall it will reappear, making the rest of the mine unreachable. ?
  • There is a common glitch where the Conduit of Boethiath will not talk to you and if you try to activate it it will say "Euuugh! Wearing flesh is so.... distasteful". If this happens, kill all of the cultists to continue. ?
  • The Miscellaneous Quest item "Investigate the Boethiah cultist" may not ever be marked as completed, even after completing the main Boethiah's Calling mission. ?
