ON NPC Style Guide[edit]

Infobox[edit]

The infobox you use for these pages is Online NPC Summary.

Basic Parameters[edit]

  • image: a required parameter. If there isn't an image available, leave this blank and a NeedsImage banner will be automatically added to the page.
  • imgdesc: If you have an image, you need a description. This can generally just be the character's name, but if they're doing something interesting in the image, you can describe that. ex: Bolaag juggling knives
  • generic: If there's multiple NPCs with the same name, doing the same thing, they're generic. This is usually found with guards and lower-level enemy types (ex: [Faction] Archer, [Faction] Frost Mage, [Faction] Mender, so on). Putting anything for this parameter will put the NPC in Category:Online-Generic NPCs.
  • reaction
    • Use Friendly for quest-related people (unless they end up attacking you) and Vendors.
    • Use Justice Neutral for NPCs that you can pickpocket or assault.
    • Use Hostile for NPCs that attack you (excluding Guards who attack when you have a bounty).
  • health
    • Most NPCs that are not Bosses have a standard health. Check Template:ESO Health for the list of values.
    • This parameter is not needed for Friendly NPCs, unless they are dead.
    • If the NPC is dead, enter 0.
  • gender: whether the NPC is male or female. For generic NPCs, you can put Varies if you can encounter versions of the NPC in either gender. Enter as plain text.
  • race: Should be one of the ones listed below, in plain text. For generic NPCs, you can put Varies if you can encounter versions of the NPC from multiple races. Undead and cursed NPCs[link to section] should be listed as their base/original race.

Location parameters[edit]

  • city should be used if the NPC is in a major city. These are marked with a ON-mapicon-City.png on the map. Use the name of the city in plain text, not a link.
  • settlement should be used if the NPC is in a town (ON-mapicon-Town.png), camp (ON-mapicon-Camp.png), or farm (ON-mapicon-Farm.png). Use the name of the settlement in plain text, not a link.
    • Temples and forts should be included here as well, but are not consistently marked with the same map icons.
    • Delves and dungeons should not be included here.
  • loc: For NPCs not in a city or settlement, this can include delve, dungeon, ruin, or landmark names, or descriptions like "northeast of [city]". For NPCs in a city or settlement, this can optionally be used to pinpoint exactly where they are, like "Outside the Mages Guild Hall". Any named location should be linked.
  • house: If the NPC lives in a specific, named house, enter the name here as a link. Can be used in conjunction with city and settlement.

Advanced Parameters[edit]

  • pickpocket and loottype
    • These attributes should only be used for Justice Neutral characters.
    • pickpocket is the difficulty of successfully pickpocketing that NPC. A table of percentages can be found on the Pickpocketing page. Use the difficulty level (Easy, Medium, Hard) rather than the percent.
    • loottype: When sneaking behind a Justice Neutral NPC, it will show the difficulty percentage, as well as an occupation in parentheses. The occupation corresponds to what kind of loot the NPC will carry, so enter this occupation as the loottype.
  • class: What battle class they are. Figuring out exactly what classes are available for NPCs in the game is a work in progress, so this should generally not be used unless you are certain you know what they are.
  • faction: What group the NPC belongs to. This can be determined by where the NPC is and who they interact with, and for generic NPCs, it's usually in the name. Use Template:Faction for this parameter. See Factions for the factions that have already been documented.

Special Cases[edit]

Bosses[edit]

  • difficulty is how many pips the Boss has next to their health bar (1, 2 or 3)
  • drops: Use only for unique or hard-to-find items. Don't list vendor trash or common crafting materials here.

Vendors[edit]

  • store: If the NPC is a vendor and their store has a name, enter the store name here.
  • sells and sells2: What type of Vendor they are.

NPCs in multiple locations[edit]

  • If the NPC is in multiple cities or settlements, list them separated by commas (with no extra spaces). The template will handle formatting and linking.
  • If the NPC is in multiple places that don't fall under the city or settlement parameter, list them separated by <br>. The template does not autolink or format the loc parameter, so you have to do that yourself.

Undead and Cursed NPCs[edit]

  • affliction: Use for NPCs that are undead, or under the effects of an illness or curse. This information does not go in the race parameter, as the NPCs still have a race that they were originally.
    • Current uses include: Vampire, Bloodfiend, Mummy, Zombie, Ra-Netu, Plague Husk, Werewolf, Soul-Shriven, Mindshriven

Description[edit]

The first sentence of the description should follow this general format: '''Name''' is a [race][occupation] in [location].

After that, you should have a brief paragraph describing what the NPC does and who they're related to/interact with. If they're a vendor, describe their store and mention what type of vendor they are. If they are involved in any quests, briefly summarize their role in each. Depending on how major of a character they are, the quests might take multiple paragraphs. Any books, notes, or letters the character wrote should be mentioned here as well.

Quests[edit]

If the NPC is involved in quests, they should be listed in alphabetical order in a bulleted list using Template:Quest Link.

Dialogue[edit]

If the NPC only has one line or a handful of lines that they cycle through, list them in the main section.

If a character is not involved in any quests, conversations they have with you or other NPCs should go under the Dialogue heading. If a character is involved with quests, the header should be Quest-Related Events, with subheadings for each quest they are in, and should also include descriptions of any important scenes or action the character is involved in for that quest.

Formatting[edit]

NPC with only a few lines[edit]

When spoken to, he'll say one of the following:

"Before the battlegrounds, all I watched was stones being moved. Now my eyes feast upon never-ending battle. I hope the fighting goes on forever."
"If my team is all Dark Elves again, I think I'll throw myself into Red Mountain."
"If Foreman Mevel thinks he can put me back to work in the quarry, he has another thing coming. I'm here to fight! It's my new calling."

Conversations between NPCs[edit]

NPC 1: "I saw a mudcrab the other day. Horrid creatures."
NPC 2: "I've heard others say the same."
NPC 1: "Goodbye."

Conversations between the player and the NPC:[edit]

"I need you to go fetch ten bear pelts for me."
What are bears?
"Bears are large, hostile creatures found across Tamriel. They will attack if you are infringing on their territory, and will always roar or growl in an effort to intimidate potential threats before attacking."
Tell me about your relationship with bears.
"That's a rather personal question, don't you think?"
Why bear pelts?
"I'm making a rug, and want only the finest furs for it."
Okay. I'll go get ten bear pelts.

Only nest dialogue when necessary- i.e. to set a subtopic off from the main thread of conversation. You should not be indenting each line more than the last. When transcribing dialogue, do not use a ; to make the whole line bold as this causes problems with screen readers. Use '''bold''' instead.

Images[edit]

If there are multiple images for a NPC, they can be displayed in a gallery at the bottom of the page.

If you would like to upload an image, follow these guidelines:

  • Only upload screenshots you have taken yourself.
  • NPC images should be jpgs.
  • NPC images should be 1:1 (square) and free of UI elements if possible. If not, add {{cleanimage|ui=[whatever the element is]}} in the image description.
  • The NPC should be clearly identifiable in the image- you should be able to see their face clearly, as well as most of their body and some of their surroundings.
  • When uploading images, they should be named ON-npc-[name].jpg. If necessary, you can add a number (02) after the name.
  • Add [[Category:Online-NPC Images]] in the description and select Screenshot generated by a UESP user and not taken from any other site (for ES Online images only) from the Licensing drop-down menu.

For more detailed information, see Help:Images.
