A Question[edit]

If I change anything on the Sandbox will it automatically create a seperate sandbox for my user? I would really like to experiment with some new fan fiction stories --Matthewest TCE 07:44, 2 May 2008 (EDT)

No, it won't. If you want to create a private sandbox it's quite easy. Just make a new page that will be your sandbox. For example a page called [[User:Matthewest/MySandbox]]. That's all private sandboxes are really, sub-pages that the user calls a sandbox. - Game LordTalk|Contribs 07:47, 2 May 2008 (EDT)
Thanks! =D --Matthewest TCE 07:50, 2 May 2008 (EDT)
I have tried but how do I create a page for it? I am familiar with creating a normal page though. It keeps saying to click one of the games listed in the sidebar but I want the User namespace... --Matthewest TCE 03:38, 3 May 2008 (EDT)
The easiest way to create a sandbox page is the same as any other page, create a link then click it, like User:Matthewest/Sandbox --Volanaro 03:46, 3 May 2008 (EDT)
Doh! I haven't been thinking straight today. Thanks for that! --Matthewest TCE 03:48, 3 May 2008 (EDT)
I know how you feel! I've been having the same problem myself recently. --Volanaro 03:56, 3 May 2008 (EDT)

Wiki Noob Question[edit]

I added asked a question on a talk page... Rhapsody 17:40, 13 August 2008 (EDT)

Wiki Noob Question[edit]

Then someone added a comment to it which I'm trying to do approximate now. Rhapsody 17:43, 13 August 2008 (EDT)

More Discussion Page Edit Questions[edit]

    1) When I indent my comment like this i have here, my comment gets puts in a shaded box like this...Rhapsody 17:56, 13 August 2008 (EDT)

and when I dont indent i dont think it puts in in a shaded box lets see...Rhapsody 17:57, 13 August 2008 (EDT)

Edit vs Add a comment[edit]

... I have not noticed these shaded boxes showing up for everyone else.

2) I see from my above comment under Noob Wiki Question above, that putting the name of the existing subject/headline in the subject/headline box of my reply did not automatically put my reply under the existing discussion... Do all of your "added" comments when using the "+" tab end up at the bottom of the Discussion page? And if that's the case how do you reply to something thats higher up on the page and make sure that it ends up in the appropriate place on the discussion page. I warned you I was new a Noob! lol.

3) Should I always use the "+" tab when adding a new comment or when replying to an existing disucssion on the page or am I supposed to be using the "edit" tab when I am replying to an ongoing discussion. Rhapsody 18:31, 13 August 2008 (EDT)

I've added the indented list to the Quick Editing Guide page. When you use "+" you always start a whole new section. If you want to add a comment to an existing section, click the "edit" link by the title of the section you want to edit. –RpehTCE 01:05, 14 August 2008 (EDT)

Template[edit]

Maybe we should keep the info that is supposed to stay in the sandbox in a template, or on a separate page, so it isn't deleted. And aren't sandboxes the places where you are supposed to save changes during a test? C Teng [talk] 09:22, 7 December 2008 (EST)

You can change anything you want - it'll just get changed back before long. The idea of including all the text in the sandbox is that people can see how various effects are achieved. If it gets moved to a template, that will no longer be possible. –RpehTCE 09:46, 7 December 2008 (EST)
Having it in a template would basically defeat the purpose of the sandbox, because then editors would not be able to edit the content. The reason the page contains so much content by default is because editors explicitly asked for a sandbox containing examples of various types of wiki markup so that they could could see the code for that markup and experiment with it to see what happens. People are supposed to delete the content, if they want to, to see what happens. There's no fear of the content really being lost, because the wiki page history keeps track of everything.
And editors are free to save sandbox changes. As it says right at the top of the page "This is a place where you can edit freely without having to worry about messing anything up." The changes won't generally stay in place for too long because we clean up the sandbox regularly, but that doesn't mean that people aren't allowed to save in the first place. --NepheleTalk 09:52, 7 December 2008 (EST)
Oh, I see. I was wondering the same thing, but I assume previous versions are saved and can be reverted back to at any time. So each save already works as its own template. Ya know, this interactive page is one of the most helpful pages I've seen so far, for newbs like myself. It was fun finding it on my own, but I think it might be helpful to shove it in the face of all newbies. This paragraph was indented with three colons.
This starts with a space
this starts with one colon
this starts with two
this starts with three

New sandboxes[edit]

I thought that, maybe Tes3Mod:Sandbox, Tes3Mod:Sandbox/Sandbox, Tes4Mod:Sandbox and Tes4Mod:Sandbox/Sandbox could be created for experiments relating to these namespaces and their subpage-based organization. --Gez 19:39, 23 March 2009 (EDT)

Might be an idea. Before doing too much more on templates, though, take a look at this. If you hadn't already seen it, it has a full list of all the new weapons Nephele is adding to our armory. Many of these will make our lives a lot, lot easier - especially with the sub-paging used in the mods. –RpehTCE 01:18, 24 March 2009 (EDT)

My Sandbox?[edit]

I dont know how to get my own sand boxes. And I don't know how to get userboxes. Can somebody help me please?— Unsigned comment by Aba la (talkcontribs) on August 14, 2009 at 16:04

See the project page for this very article to learn how to create your own sandbox. It seems that you've figured out Userboxes for yourself. -Dlarsh(Talk,Contribs) 23:01, 14 August 2009 (UTC)

Noob Question[edit]

Usually on some pages, there would be a Contents box that help you move down to the category without scrolling down so much.

How do you do that? — Unsigned comment by 203.77.67.157 (talk) on October 23, 2009

I think you have to have a certain number of section headers before it'll show up. Can't remember how many though...probably at least 2-3? –Eshetalk 03:51, 24 October 2009 (UTC)
If your refer to the Nine Divines page: the only reason it doesn't have a content box is because somebody put in a NOTOC.
__NOTOC__
And if you want to add a contents box, just add the above without the NO. --Krusty 13:42, 24 October 2009 (UTC)

Deleting a Sandbox[edit]

Can I suggest adding instructions for deleting a sandbox? Perhaps under the "Other Sandboxes" section, a NEW section called "Deleting Sandboxes"

Something like, You can delete personal sandboxes that you create by editing it and inserting {{speedydeletion|I no longer need this sandbox}}. For general information about deleting pages from the wiki, see The UESP Wiki Deletion Policy.

I'd also like to add that I think the project page here is confusing, a problem of course, because a primary purpose of sandboxes is to help new (and confused) users!

Just the "You can edit This page at the beginning is confusing, because it is not immediately clear whether the "this" refers to the very page it is written on, or whether it is linking the user to a new page. It can be a little mind-blowing.

Maybe: This very page you are reading now is designed so that you can edit it yourself.

The page will automatically revert to its current content ... (um, however that works).. periodically? After a certain number of edits?

To begin practicing at this moment, click the "edit" tab at the top of the page.

... Did you do it? If so, you can now begin experimenting with editing a page that contains information about editing!

There is nothing you can do to mess up this page, so try out anything you want.

Something like that???

--Jreynolds2Talk 17:36, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

What's the purpose of that? You don't create pages with the intention of deleting them. I think the page is clear the way it is now. The page gets refreshed manually, which means another user restores it, so it depends on how much activity there is on the site. If you need information about deleting pages, see here ~ Dwarfmp 18:28, 9 January 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for your answer. Are you asking me what the purpose would be for deleting a sandbox page? Well, if a sandbox can be used as a temporary space to experiment or practice, or to develop something, then it seems that they would often be created exactly with the intention of deleting them when the experiment or temporary work is finished. If there is no purpose for deleting a sandbox page, then I think there something missing from my knowledge or my logic.
If there IS a purpose for deleting a sandbox, then I think it is not always easy for a new editor and someone who is not very familiar with UESP or wiki technology to figure out how to do it. As you know, I figured out how to do it, because you processed the request for me, but it took me a lot of effort to find that simple information.
In my case just earlier, I remembered that I had seen the deletion policy page before, but I could not remember where it was. I could not find it by searching on UESP with the term "speedy deletion". (Now, I realize that I need to do an advanced search and have certain boxes checked that are not checked by default.) At the time, however, it was quite frustrating for me to try to find it. So my purpose for suggesting that we add simple instructions for people to delete their sandboxes is simply... well, that I think some people may find it helpful. Isn't that what a "Help File" is for? I finally found the information by searching Google for "UESP speedy deletion"!
You think the page is clear. It is not clear to me. Haha. That's OK. I just wanted to give my suggestion, that's all. Thanks again for your help. Trading messages with you made me look at your user page, and it was so interesting that I read the whole thing. Don't worry about the bacteria in the beer. They like to be in your stomach. Did you know that our bodies have 10 bacterial cells for every human cell? So we are really bacteria with a little human in us! Thanks again. --Jreynolds2Talk 20:47, 9 January 2012 (UTC)
Most people who create a sandbox in the first place mostly use it to work on an article or something similar. Those few people who do, tend to be active on the site, and therefore use the sandbox over and over again. If you create a sandbox merely to test something and then delete it, this page functions as your temporary sandbox. So even fewer people would benefit from the deletion information. I just don't think it belongs here.
I do, however, agree that for finding specific pages, it's very hard to do so by using the help files etc., so perhaps more links can be added in the help files for example. You'd be surprised though how few people really browse the site for such information, people who have the ability to improve the site and actually do so by doing far more than mere minor edits (or at least that's my impression). Those people usually already know the info you're looking for, or they figure it out on their own (like you did now), albeit difficult sometimes. There's nothing wrong with contacting an administrator or patroller for questions, so most people do that instead. While these pages could perhaps be improved, there are many more pages out there that need much more attention, editors supposedly have more useful things to do. But don't take my word for it, I may be wrong.
Sorry for putting you through all the yapping on my userpage though :) ~ Dwarfmp 15:01, 10 January 2012 (UTC)

Personal Sandbox Question[edit]

I don't know how to find a list of, or access personal sandboxes that I have created unless I remember all of their page names. I feel I need to keep a list of sandboxes ... perhaps in a sandbox? Then what if I forget the name of that sandbox? Help! --Jreynolds2Talk 17:39, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

If you look at my pathetic user page you'll see that I keep a list on top, for easier access. Others creates new pages within their userspace for a list of sandboxes - it's all up to you and perfectly alright. --Krusty 17:42, 9 January 2012 (UTC)
And if you really forgot, somehow, you can easily find the edits you made in it in your user contributions in the upper right corner of your screen, and then just filter it to userpages ~ Dwarfmp 18:28, 9 January 2012 (UTC)
Both good solutions. Thanks. It shows how we cannot see some very simple things that are new to us. I was thinking, "If I lose a sandbox, I will have to look through all of my contributions list." I never really looked at that page long enough to realize there was a filter. --Jreynolds2Talk 20:55, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

Editing "above" the TOC[edit]

This is probably one of those questions answered in the Help and How To sections, so I apologize for my impatience and I simply haven't located it yet. I created a page with information above the TOC, like an introductory note to the page. On this page (sandbox discussion) it is the section that begins; "NOTE: This page is not a sandbox page" and on the project page it is the section that starts; "Welcome to the sandbox!". How do I edit this section? Now that the page is created (saved), I can't find an "edit" link that includes this section. I may not have created it in the proper way, but this seems true for many pages regardless. Thanks in advance, if you find a moment. --Satribe (talk) 05:44, 17 November 2020 (UTC)

EDIT: "How 'bout the [edit] tab, conveniently located at the top of the page?" Sorry. Also added my sig to the original note. --Satribe (talk) 05:44, 17 November 2020 (UTC)

That's the built-in way, which works on all wikis, so it's obviously good to know. On many wikis, including ours, there's also a Gadget that allows you to edit the top section independently from the rest of the page. To find it, go to your Preferences and select the Gadgets tab. Look near the bottom of the list for "Add an [edit] link for the lead section of a page" and select that, then save your preferences. You should now have an edit button for the lead section.
