Aiding the people of Winterhold[edit]

I did a permutation of Season Unending, giving Winterhold to the Empire and it counted as 1 instance of helping the people in Winterhold. Maybe it doesn't matter, but still, counts as one. --190.234.137.47 20:26, 15 August 2013 (GMT)

That's odd. I don't know why it would count as one. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 16:41, 16 August 2013 (GMT)
My best guess would be that it might have affected Kraldar's disposition before making him Jarl. Anything that improves citizen disposition counts as aiding. --Morrolan (talk) 19:05, 6 September 2013 (GMT)

Why I could not start this quest after returning the helm[edit]

I was not able to start the quest after returning the helm. The Jarl would not offer me the option in the dialogue. I made sure the following was true:

I was of appropriate level: I was level 60
I had appropriate disposition: I used the console code "showrelationshiprank player" and got a result of "2"
The "Retrieve the Helm of Winterhold" quest was indeed properly completed: I used console code "getStage Favor257" and got a result of "200"
I had no other "Become the Thane of" quests active: I used console code "sqo" to make certain.

At the very least at this point, I should have been given the quest, irrespective of the fact that I already had helped the people of the hold and it would have been instantly completed. After scouring the internet and doing my own error trapping with any quest I thought would be related to the hold or the Thane (even radiant ones), here is what I discovered:

If you have Hearthfire installed and have any one of the of [|Build your own Home quests] started but not completed, you will not be allowed to accept any Thane quests from any other Thanes in any other holds. Even though I had already become a Thane in Hjaalmarch, I had not yet visited the homestead property, nor began construction on the house. Upon visiting the property and building the foundation, the quest completed. I immediately returned to Winterhold and was able to begin and instantly finish this quest.

I'm adding this as an unverified bug to the BYOH page. Next time I play, I'll try and verify it. --Morrolan (talk) 14:44, 13 November 2016 (UTC)
I'll say this with the caveat that I'm running a rather heavily modded build, if one that at least in theory shouldn't interfere with Thaneship. After visiting my purchased Hearthfire property, I was able to get the "Help the People" and other associated Thane quests. I doubt this is usable as proof one way or another of the bug, but I felt it was important to note this anyways in case someone else ran into the same issue in the future. Fixed bug, unable to get quest to help people[edit]

I ended up doing the entire College questline before going to be Thane of Winterhold and got hit by the bug that causes the Dungeon Delving quest to be marked as completed. I checked Dungeon Delving with getstage Favor158 and it returns 200 and cannot be changed with setstage. However, as a workaround I was able to get the quest to help the people of Winterhold to start with setstage Favor257 10. Just posting this here in case anyone else runs into this issue. Best bet would be to become Thane BEFORE starting the College questline. 70.171.115.17 23:46, 10 November 2016 (UTC)

Question about other ways to help the people of Winterhold[edit]

Can anyone say with certainty whether helping Onmund(Onmund's Request) or Arniel Gane(Arniel's Endeavor) does or does not count as helping the people of Winterhold?
