Dawnbreaker[edit]

I went through Dead Man's Respite during this quest and found that the explosion from the Dawnbreaker occurring as soon as the magically sealed door could cause the book with King Olaf's Verse to glitch into the rock below Svaknir, making it impossible to obtain. Xbox 360.--Smite11 06:52, 21 November 2011 (UTC)

I'm having a hard time understanding your explanation, but it sounds very much like a one-of. What explosion from Dawnbreaker? --Krusty 07:30, 21 November 2011 (UTC)
Dawnbreaker's effect is a chance to turn undead and a chance to cause an explosion, or fiery AoE effect, when they die. As quoted from the weapon's description "Burns target for 10 points. When an undead enemy is killed (vampires included), there is a chance of a fiery AoE effect. This effect deals damage, possibly reduces to ash and/or casting a Turn Undead spell. The blade glows more brightly when undead are nearby."--Smite11 11:44, 21 November 2011 (UTC)
I can confirm having the same Dawnbreaker / Verse glitch on PC - I used Dawnbreaker on the undead above the spiral staircase and when I went downstairs the book was nowhere to be found, even after 20 minutes of looking and Force shouting. It must have glitched into a rock - I recommend not using Dawnbreaker at all until the verse is recovered, to be safe. JesusFists 09:53, 22 January 2012 (UTC)

Possible glitch/bug: According to multiple sources (including the official game guide) the player is supposed to receive a perk called "Gift of the Gab" upon joining the Bard College at the end of this quest, possibly depending on his suggestions for the reconstruction of the verse. The only attainable reward, however, seems to be a sum of gold, regardless of the player's choices.

  • Update on "Gift of the Gab" glitch: Notice that in the Prima Skryim Guide, next to the table showing the different Quest Abilities, there is a note in which Prima states that some of the abilities will not be explicitly stated in the Active Effects section of the Magic menu. Although you wont see any notification on-screen or on the Active Effects it will be quietly working behind the scenes. That is, if when rewriting King Olaf's Verse with Viarmo, you pass both of the persuasion attempt dialogue options. The other ability that does not appear under Active Effects is Archmage's Authority, but it too is working behind the scenes.--BangsBigBlunt 8:58, 6 February 2012

Additionally, the performance Viarmo delivers in front of the Jarl may differ from the suggestions the player made.

kioru_sesheema@yahoo.com -- About the issue with using Dawnbreakers effect, and no Verse in the skeleton of Svaknir's hands. Uhm...yeah...I don't even have Dawnbreaker yet, and the Verse is..."misplaced". Ugh! I believe it may be in the stone. :[ Also, I may not have Dawnbreaker, but I have started the quest--received from the Dadraeic Goddess Meridia--Breaking the Dawn. Does this mean anything, by chance? Please...any help; any at all...would be great. Thank-you Kioru Sesheema

A bug?[edit]

I passed the persuasion checks on boath of the "Olaf was a dragon" options, but when Viarmo preformed the vers for the court, he performed the one where the soliders dressed up in part two. What the hell? I believe I still got the reword equal to the options I chose though. Jyggorath 14:33, 2 December 2011 (UTC)

I had the exact same thing, added it to the page as a bug (also added the bug section, apologies if the way I formated it isn't the usual, am new to editing here but am a big editer elsewhere so I winged it) then came here and read you had the same problem. I chose for Olad to have been a dragon too and also for him to have tricked Solitude into attacking Winterhold but Viarmo read the verses for Olaf letting the dragon go and for him sending disguised troops into the city. I didn't realize you get different rewards depending on your choices though.--Lyco499 02:49, 3 December 2011 (UTC)
I also passed both Persuades and got the disguised soldiers result, but I'm not too broken up about it, since I still got 1500 gold for my troubles. Nymphonomicon 07:55, 29 January 2012 (UTC)

Two Bugs[edit]

Moved these two bugs from the article:

On occasion the door to the throne room will become un-passable (in either direction). If the player is in the throne room when this occurs they can use the passage at the top of the stairs to exit, otherwise you will need to load a previously saved game.
Sometimes during the ceremony, the animation of Viarmo lighting the effigy will loop non-stop, never finishing the ceremony, causing all present to lose dialogue options. Waiting/fast traveling does not fix this. The only way is to load a previously saved file. PC FIX: Pantea Ateia, the female in green seems to be the issue. Opening the console, clicking her and typeing kill will knock her down. While Viarmo is lighting the effigy, talk to him just as he finishes lighting it (spam talk if needed) and then tab out of talking to him. He will immediately continue with the quest. During this, resurrect Pantea Ateia by opening the console and clicking her body, type resurrect. This seems to bring everything back into play.

360 fix: If the lighting of the flames is in a never ending loop, load a previous save. Go find pantea's flute and return it to Pantea before attending the ceremony.

The first bug doesn't even seem like a bug, the second one involves hitting Pantea - which sounds like a bad idea to me. I've kept the vn-tags to ensure this gets checked somewhere in time. --Krusty 06:43, 12 December 2011 (UTC)

To fix the Viarmo stuck lighting the dummy thing, you can disable Pantea Ateia (open console, click her, type disable) instead of killing her. This makes her disappear from the game without causing any trouble. Then talk to Viarmo (try many times) just like the solution above suggests, and after completing the quest just type enable into the console (her code will remain selected from when you disabled her) and she's back into the game, without any collateral effects. Thanks to the guy who suggested killing her though, I wouldn't have discovered this without him.— Unsigned comment by 83.57.224.233 (talk) at 07:53 on 17 December 2011

This will be solution if you set the dummy on fire and Viarmo continuesly repairing the flaming dummy.

Ring Door Bug[edit]

When I try to move the rings on the door to the final throne room, then don't move. I can try to use the claw to open, but the rings themselves don't turn. I have tried rebooting an earlier save and this didn't fix the problem. I'm skipping this mission for now.— Unsigned comment by 67.165.29.110 (talk) at 14:32 on 13 December 2011

This seems to be a common bug. The best fix that I've found (as stated somewhere below) is to create a manual save when you're in front of the door, then load that save. When it loads, the ring images should be random and you should be able to turn them and open the door.

Viarmo doesn't perform the verse[edit]

I'm currently in the blue palace, and Viarmo is just standing around doing nothing instead of performing the verse. I've tried exiting the palace and going back in but that has not corrected the problem. I decided to skip it and come back later but that didn't work either. 24.210.110.228 04:52, 31 December 2011 (UTC)

Happened to me as well. I just reloaded to before I headed to the Blue Palace, that fixed it for me. Not sure what's wrong, it just seems to be a bit buggy running the related scripts. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 05:05, 31 December 2011 (UTC)

Pick pocket viramo and the quest will come completed. Just pay the fine off.

Likewise, this is happening to me. Though in my case as soon as I said I was ready to go, it gave me the completion for watching the performance that never happened and Viarmo shouts "Unbelievable! You've done a great service...". As far as I can tell the quest will continue normally, but the performance never took place. 76.115.116.14 08:03, 25 January 2012 (UTC)
I'm experiencing this as well, even after 1.4. The other wiki claims is related to finishing the Civil War questline for the stormcloaks, kicking Elsif of the Blue Palace. That's partially true in my case- I am done with the Civil War. However, I sided with the Imperials and Elsif is in the palace. Anyone know of a workaround?— Unsigned comment by 70.168.11.201 (talk) at 09:22 on 11 February 2012

Bug issues with retrieving King Olaf's Verse before this quest.[edit]

I've encountered problems with this quest on PC which I think are caused by going to Dead Men's Respite and picking up King Olaf's Verse before trying to join the Bard's College. I believe I was sent to Dead Men's Respite by the Greybeards or a 'Letter from a Friend' to get the Word of Power there. While there I picked up the Verse which became a quest object and undroppable. Sometime after this, attempting to open the door to Dead Men's Respite causes my game to CTD. Once starting the Tending the Flames quest the door into the Blue Palace also causes my game to CTD at any point during this quest up to setstage MS05 200. I also removed the Verse with the console, re-added it, etc in many variations of leaving the cell, waiting etc, none of which fixed this issue. After the Blue Palace door becomes functional again at setstage 200 the rest of the quest still doesn't function for me, with no dialogue options and no coat. It may be worth noting that Viarmo's dialogue menu choices, and his actual speech before filling in the verse are slightly different if you start the quest with the Verse already in your inventory. If anybody knows of a fix for this issue I'd greatly appreciate it. Ashvelvyn 04:48, 8 January 2012 (UTC)

I am having an issue on the PS3. I retrieved the King Olaf's Verse before trying to join the Bard's College as well. However, after Viarmo tells me that he needs to find a copy, the conversation ends before he can ask me to do it, failing to initiate the quest. I've tried over and over again, exiting and re-entering the College, and it still won't let me initiate the quest. If anyone knows of this or can help me, I would greatly appreciate it.

Puzzle Door in Dead Man's Respite on 360[edit]

Having serious issues with this door. Ran the dungeon once before with another character without issue. Now with a 2nd character I've run into a glitch. The first time clearing the area I came to a puzzle door that was set all to the dragon symbols (often the symbols turned to when the door is unlocked)however the rings won't turn and the key is useless. I started again from outside the dungeon and after clearing it a 2nd time found the door's rings set to a more hopeful and random selection and I was able to turn them. However, when set to their assigned symbols, the key again failed to open the door, appearing only to turn in the lock and set off the trap. I suppose I could try a 3rd time but wonder if this is going to be an ongoing issue. I'd like to get through the Bard line but without this quest (or, more specifically any way to exit Dead Man's Respite once I have the needed King Olaf's Verse)I don't see that as possible. Any suggestions? — Unsigned comment by Arhaydn (talkcontribs) at 23:05 on 13 January 2012

I had the same problem. I saved while I was standing in front of the door and then loaded that save and the rings were all different and I was able to turn them. Hope this helps. — Unsigned comment by 174.252.53.53 (talk) at 23:12 on 7 February 2012

Can't talk to Jorn after the verse[edit]

Before the verse was done I did the Wabbajack quest, when I came out of it I was thanked as if i had watched the verse and then I was told to talk to jorn. However; when I went to talk to Jorn it didn't give me the option to start the festivel instead the only thing I could say is "You seem proud to be a bard", and when I'm stading by him he only says "get the coat, then we'll talk". I looked around for what that ment and apparently I have to go fine General Tullius' coat and I have no idea where that is. Is anyone els having this problem? I have tried to load a previous save but that didn't work the same thing happened and I also tried restarting the game and I tried waiting to see if that would help but it didn't. — Unsigned comment by 96.54.231.193 (talk) at 16:42 on 18 January 2012

I suppose you mean lighting the King Olaf doll at the end? In any case, you are not supposed to set the statue on fire, Viarmo will do that. --Krusty 23:52, 22 February 2012 (UTC)

Tending the Flames problem[edit]

I'm having a problem where the head bard won't go to the Blue Palace at all to recite the verse after I help him with reconstructing the verse. I've tried just about everything to work around this with no success, up to and including a clean save because I thought I might have missed doing something at Dead Man's Cairn. No matter what I do differently, he still invites me to go with him to court, then constantly mentions that we really need to head to court but he'll either sit down somewhere and not leave the Bard's College or if he DOES leave he'll head to the Winking Skeaver instead of the palace. Any suggestions for working through this?75.92.215.185 16:30, 14 April 2012 (UTC)

He may appear when you enter the palace. Go there even if he doesn't and see what happens. The Silencer has spoken 16:35, 14 April 2012 (UTC)
Nope, that doesn't work either, have already tried it multiple times including one time where I went inside and sat in the chair next to the front door for an entire 24 hours.75.92.215.185 04:38, 15 April 2012 (UTC)
Maybe it's connected to the introductory scene of The Man Who Cried Wolf? This quest can affect that one in a negative way, so maybe it is the same the other way around? Have you completed it? --Krusty 14:06, 10 May 2012 (UTC)
If Viarmo is doing this then you will have to manually advance the stage of the quest. Use the command setstage MS05 XXX - 300 will be the completed quest but you can go to the "Tending the Flames" page on the UESPWiki to see the other stages of the quest. — Unsigned comment by 24.9.24.248 (talk) at 06:25 on 28 June 2012

() I've seen this once and it is usually caused by not having had introductory scene of The Man Who Cried Wolf as Krusty stated. I've had it clear up by going to the palace, waiting for the scene to play out and then returning and talking to Viarmo one last time and returning to the palace should cause him to appear there at that point. Lord Eydvar Talk|Contribs 08:53, 14 November 2012 (GMT)

I agree with Lord Eydvar's answer. In general it's a very good idea to go to court before setting off for Dead Men's Respite, to avoid triggering this bug in the first place. (Also don't do this quest simultaneously with Season Unending.) --Morrolan (talk) 21:35, 12 April 2013 (GMT)

viarmo fix[edit]

I went to kill parthanax after the greybeards had a sit down. Delphine talked to me after and wanted ne to kill parthanax, so I went up there and talked with him first and for some reason the tending the flames quest said complete, so weird. so I hope that helps you guys, it could also be a random person in skyrim u need to talk to, to in freeze these glitches

This quest is in conflict with Bound Until Death[edit]

Hello,

First of all sorry for approximate english it is not my first language.

In my game I have the dark brotherhood quest : "Bound Until Death" active an so when I came to talk to Jorn he told me to wait some days until the marriage currently happening in the temple is over. I guess it deserves a "Note" or something.

Jean Peuplus 10:43, 7 July 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the info! I've added a Notes section to the page with a link to this discussion post, so other editors can test this information and discuss here before removing the {{VN}} tag. And your English is just fine, no worries! :) -ABCface 12:00, 12 July 2012 (UTC)
Same thing happened to me. I couldn't complete it until "Bound Until Death" was over it seems Ninti (talk) 07:16, 21 November 2014 (GMT)

Where is Jorn? (Tending the Flames)[edit]

I'm playing Skyrim on xbox. Viermo performs for the Jarl, then tells me to talk to Jorn. Well, no Jorn. Arrow points outside Solitude. When I go outside, it points inside. I've looked everywhere, inside the Blue Palace, in the Bards College, the Inn, outside Solitude. I've seen this glitch mentioned in other places, but no fix. Anyone know? Driving me crazy. Thanks!

I experienced this exact same glitch playing on PS3. The map marker pointed outside Solitude (east of the Docks), but there was no one there. I subsequently tried everything from reloading older saves, restarting the quest, combing through all buildings, going to sleep at the other side of the world map for a week waiting for the game to reset it's NPC's; to no avail. It really drove me crazy, but eventually I found Jorn! He has actually fallen through the map. Solitude floats loosely on a rocky outcrop and the player can reach this twilight zone as well through a glitch near the market.
(I suggest telling any follower of yours to wait before attempting this, of course saving your game in advance AND to do this just after 10:00 PM, otherwise Jorn will simply ask you to come back after dusk, and you'll have to go through all of this again!)
So from the walkway in front of the Fletcher you can jump onto the roof of Angeline's Aromatics, then Whirlwind Sprint Thu'um your way across the street onto the roof of Bits and Pieces. If you then jump to the right around the rooftop edge, onto a wooden beam between Bits and Pieces and Radiant Raiment, you will fall through the world. (For a visual guide: look up Solitude glitch on Youtube). When you find yourself standing on the black rock with the city teeming overhead, start walking towards the quest arrow pointing to Jorn's exact location. (The marker is actually correct, he's really there.) But watch out: there's a HUGE drop down to sea level between you and him. I suggest using the Become Ethereal Thu'um to safely survive the fall. You can then just speak to him and further the quest! Yay, King Olaf will burn after all! (Though Jorn won't show up at the party since he seems to be stuck down there indefinitely.) To get all the way back up to the 'real world' simply Fast Travel out of the twilight zone up to Solitude. --Nymeria (talk) 03:44, 15 December 2012 (GMT)

Jorn continually playing drums after ceremony[edit]

I tried talking to Jorn while he was playing drums at the ceremony but obviously didn't get anywhere. After the ceremony he's still stood where he was during, I can talk to him but after I exit the conversation he just starts playing the drums again. Whenever he tries to move away he's stuck in this small square of land and then just moves back to where he was and then goes and plays the drums again. I've tried recycling the actor with the console but he just walks outside to where he was and starts playing the drums again. Any ideas? I'd rather not remove him and add him back because then he has a different RefID. Any ideas? Thanks :) 82.4.54.248 23:32, 13 August 2012 (UTC)

Bards playing instruments outside the college after the quest is completed[edit]

Is there a fix to this bug? I also notice guests coming to the college at night as if the festival were not finished. Haven't encountered this before Dawnguard is installed. — Unsigned comment by 218.102.198.81 (talk) at 14:32 on 14 August 2012

Svaknir and Olaf[edit]

My bug is in Dead Men's Respite. Svaknir's Ghost didn't walk to guide me all through out the dungeon not even what I saw he did in a walkthrough (sat beside his skeleton). The door that supposedly lead to King Olaf's burial chamber is not magically sealed, and the one buried inside is not King Olaf, but a Dread Lord Draugr. However, even with all this the quest was not hindered. — Unsigned comment by 203.215.119.150 (talk) at 13:00 on 5 November 2012

Can't join the college[edit]

I visited the college after clearing Dead Man's Respute and obtaining Olaf's verse long ago, so I was instantly given the option to give Viarmo the verse during my initial conversation with him.

In the Blue Palace, he never played anything. I met him in the entrance area by the door and told him I was ready, and it instantly said that "watching his performance" was complete.

I then went and spoke to Jorn and the festival seemed to go naturally (though at night). But I have read that I was supposed to light the fire, when Viarmo did it instead. After the festival, however, Viarmo introduces me as a bard and everyone claps, but I'm still not a bard. He didn't inform me of the other "teacher's" quests/tasks, he simply mentioned that they would have some. Now he has a quest arrow on his head that says "Investigate the Bard's college."

Not sure if this is a bug or a conflict with any of the (at least 10) other quests I have active, but I thought I'd mention it. Also still haven't figured it out if anyone has any suggestions. — Unsigned comment by Ace2213 (talkcontribs) at 02:17 on 4 June 2013

Update: I was able to do 2 of the college quests (and got the mage and theif bonuses) but the last one eludes me. It's also obvious that the "glitch" still exists, because Viarmo still has that quest arrow on his head wherever he goes, which is why I had to manually find each of those 2 quests, and probably why I can't find the third. — Unsigned comment by Ace2213 (talkcontribs) at 02:47 on 6 June 2013

bug: quest just doesn't complete[edit]

I've encountered a problem that doesn't seem to match the known bugs. Everything goes as normal, until after the burning ceremony is done. The quest marker stays where it is, the quest doesn't finish, and nobody around will talk to me. Viarmo just keeps saying "I think they like you". there aren't any animation loops or anything else to indicate that something's wrong, it just doesn't go forward. I'm going to bed now, but tomorrow I'll try the console command fix given for the animation loop, and if that doesn't work I'll try the fast travel fix, but I was wondering if anyone else has encountered this. - 173.212.101.126 05:45, 22 June 2014 (GMT)

I don't get the *Gift of Gab* perk for ps3 (as far as I know)[edit]

I complete the quest doing options 3 and 4 (both persuasion. but only get the second reward that's okay but what bugs me is. that I don't get the *Gift of Gab* perk.
i've tried reloading to just before the quest completes and doing the quest all over. but it still won't fix. I used to be able to get when the game first came out. but can someone help me.
I don't want to restart. but is there something like before the quest completes save then kill Viarmo then reload or something like that.

One of the warnings is not correct[edit]

The quest is not in conflict with The Man Who Cried Wolf unless that you have talked to Lisette about rumours, or Varnius is present in the Blue Palace. If none of those things happen, the quest can move along easily, and if Varnius is there, he will speak with the Jarl first. The correct advice is to not speak with Viarmo until you have checked that Varnius is not speaking with her, and/or to not speak with Lisette about rumours. BTW, there is also a mistake in that quest page: Skyrim:The_Man_Who_Cried_Wolf listing Jala as the Winking Skeever's bard. The correct NPC is Lisette: Skyrim:Lisette

I would like to make all these changes, that I also requested in the discussion page of The Man Who Cried Wolf, but sadly I have no idea how to do it properly, so please, someone that has idea do it. Thanks — Unsigned comment by 85.48.21.213 (talk) at 01:41 on 16 July 2019

It is correct that there is a warning here because if you don't take the precautions you've mentioned then there will be a conflict. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 18:20, 16 July 2019 (UTC)

Possible fix for Jorn and Ataf stuck continue playing after the festival[edit]

Stumble across a possible fix for Jorn and Ataf stuck bug, stuck playing instruments after the festival quest. Fix can only be done during the quest.

To fix the problem, after you talk to Jorn that the festival is back on and Jorn asks you to meet outside of the college, immediately go to the pointer position where Viarmo will burn the effigy. Just stand beside the pointer. Then immediately press "T" to use the wait function to wait for 1 hour. Watch the whole scene. After the quest complete, go inside your Proudspire house (preferably through the main door) or any indoor area like Blue Palace or the inn. Then go back outside and you should see Jorn and Ataf no longer get stuck playing instruments continuously.

The "wait for 1 hour" somehow unstuck the two of them. If they are already stuck in your game, it seems nothing can fix them. Console command like "resetai", "recycleactor" won't work. This bug is harmless but for me, it is a bit annoying and eye sore seeing the AI malfunction. I tried doing the quest multiple times and each time they get stuck. Eventually stumble across this method to fix it. It may work for other players as well. Hope this helps. 115.134.14.71 08:02, 4 September 2021 (UTC)

Experimented it further, here a possibly more effective way to avoid this bug: After you help Viarmo with the verse, Viarmo will go to the Blue Palace. Wait until 6:30 pm to 7:00 pm before you talk to Viarmo so that he can start presenting the verse to Elisif around that time. When he finishes, he will talk to you. You need to time it well so that when he tells you to speak with Jorn to start the festival, it should be around 8:00 pm.
In other words, by the time he finishes telling you to talk to Jorn, the time should be about 8:00 pm. Make a save here (Inside Blue Palace, about 8:00 pm, right after Viarmo talks to you) and quickly run to Jorn to speak to him. After speaking to Jorn, quickly run next to the spot where Viarmo will start talking and burning the effigy. Quickly wait for 1 hour. Viarmo should instantly appear at that spot. The scene will proceed as normal. Take some sweets if you want. Then go inside Bard College. If both Jorn and Ataf get back inside the college, then you have successfully avoided the bug. If not, reload the save and try again. Usually reloading the save and try it second time should work. 115.133.25.199 04:30, 6 December 2021 (UTC)

Tullius' Coat[edit]

There is a side quest that does not seem to appear in the game. After speaking to Jorn, he should send you to steal Tullius' Coat to complete the King Olaf Effigy. There is even dialogue scripted for Tullius:

However, Jorn will never actually start this quest, and will simply skip straight to lighting the effigy after dusk.

Trying to force the objective with console commands does not work. I haven't been able to successfully use setstage, as the quest stage cannot be found.

This may be because of a conflict caused by what stage of the Civil War questline you are in. Further testing needed to prove this.

New bug[edit]

Though it has happened many times on different avatars. I get to the door where Svaknir is, I pick up Olaf's verse and loot Svaknir, and the ghost doesn't move. just sits there. I have reloaded 8 times, and no luck. You can't exit this dungeon if he doesn't open the spelled door!
