Daedric artifact[edit]

Do you need this for the achievement of getting the daedric artifacts?— Unsigned comment by 71.170.97.132 (talk) at 01:36 on 17 March 2012

No, the quest concerning this artifact is technically considered a Thieves Guild quest. Wolok gro-Barok 15:28, 17 March 2012 (UTC)

Keep the Skeleton Key?[edit]

I've read rumors of ways you can keep the Skeleton Key? Either retrieve it back or spawn a new copy through some glitch? Mind you, this is for the 360 version, so I can't use console commands. --DgTexan 04:02, 11 June 2012 (UTC)

You can console yourself the Skeleton Key on the PC, even at the beginning of the game. Dunno anything about PS3 or Xbox versions though. Vyc Ðarkshådøw 01:02, 1 July 2012 (UTC)

Requires a key?[edit]

In oblivion the skeleton key was able tt be used to unlock locks labeled as such. I forgot to check on two run throughs on the thieves guild quest line, but does anyone know if this works in skyrim as well? Artemis Entreri 14:09, 25 August 2012 (UTC)

It only worked like that before Oblivion, it is basically only an ubreakable lockpick. You need a key to open doors that need a key. SilencerSpeak 15:35, 25 August 2012 (UTC)
Given that there are doors in Oblivion that are purely decorative that can NEVER be opened (e.g. some of the doors in the first dungeon while escaping from prison), it would make little sense to allow those doors to be opened by any means. (You can open them via console, but you'd just see a wall behind them, or empty space.) I've yet to encounter any such doors in Skyrim, but I wouldn't be surprised if they exist. Also, unlike Oblivion, Skyrim has a number of doors that are locked by means other than pickable locks (e.g. bars on one side, or doors operated by lever or pull-chain), so these doors could never be opened by any lockpick, including the Skeleton Key. --TheRealLurlock Talk 12:19, 28 August 2012 (UTC)

Is It Scripted?[edit]

Will it break any quests if I use the Console to add this item to my inventory during the start quest? I hate the new lockpicking method because there is no automatic option, and when using the Console to try and open locks, it takes too much luck to find the right spot to use the command on, because they chose to no longer identify doors with words, choosing numbers instead. If I get the Skeleton Key, will it work like a key, or do I still have to do the damn lockpicking task? If so, I'd rather use a spell I think. Is there a spell somewhere that I can get, as I hate the new lock/unlock method?! Leo Star Dragon 1 21:45, 26 August 2012 (UTC)

The key is just an,unbreakable pick. And I do not think there are any open spells.Skyrimplayer 23:09, 26 August 2012 (UTC)
The Tower Stone allows you to automatically open a lock once per day if it is Expert-level or lower. I don't use PC, so I don't know anything about console commands, but maybe there's a way to use the power more than once per day with console commands? ABCface 05:11, 27 August 2012 (UTC)
God mode should do the trick.Or at least it did that in Oblvion.--Skyrimplayer 12:13, 27 August 2012 (UTC)
Press ~ while in game to access the console. While the console is up, click on the door you want to open. type "open" (without quotes) and hit Enter. The door will be unlocked. 74.134.246.219 06:40, 2 July 2013 (GMT)
I completed the questline then readded the Skeleton Key to my inventory. All it did was change the appearance of my lockpicks; they still break. 73.167.162.83 19:54, 23 September 2022 (UTC)

Problem with Bedlam and the Skeleton Key?[edit]

I'm noticing that I don't get credit toward my bedlam jobs while I have the skeleton key, obtained through killing Mercer. Happens even if I quit one bedlam job and start another. I'm also not able to get the script from Delvon for the Eye of the Fallmer to come up, even though I've traded in all the other special artifacts found during the Thieves Guild main quest. So I'm wondering whether this either a bug or an unscripted anti-exploit feature, preventing you from using the key to complete a bunch of Thieves Guild jobs. Anyone know?

That would fit with the lore (key must be returned in order for the guild to break their unlucky curse).
I'm likewise unable to get any of the "special jobs" after completing bedlam jobs, burglary jobs, and the like. I'm not sure if this is due to not returning the key, or if the "special jobs" don't become available until after completing the main Thieves Guild quest line. Didn't want to give it back until I made Lockpicking legendary and got it back up a ways (lockpicks are just so expensive). However, I was able to sell the Eye of the Falmer to Delvin. — Medouneu (talk) 14:19, 12 June 2015 (UTC)

Jail and the Skeleton Key[edit]

Being caught for a crime in whiterun and being put in jail, the one lockpick that you get to keep acts as a skeleton key. so you can easily escape through the sewer grate. Trouble with that is the skeleton key is not kept in either the evidence chest or prisoners belongings chest. although after i escaped i walked up to a guard got re-arrested for escaping and this time served my sentence, getting my skeleton key back in the process. Fennec--Fox (talk) 06:14, 24 March 2013 (GMT)

Upon reloading a previous save where i had gone to jail and the skeleton key dissapeared, i checked my MISC items and it seems the key came back. perhaps it was temporarily hidden? maybe since quest items cannot be removed from inventory they are just temporarily hidden when you serve jail time? Ebonmere[edit]

This got me thinking, Will the luck of the Theives Guild still flow if Nocturnal Willingly Gave the key to someone, It's a thought that came to mind and I don't expect to ever find out fully. Dunehelm 02:06, 7 May 2014 (GMT)

Oh Its Dunehelm, I forgot I was not signed in before posting this , sorry bout that UESP. Dunehelm 02:08, 7 May 2014 (GMT)
If you're referring to how players were able to get the skeleton key in earlier games, I'm not sure that was really the same artifact. It certainly doesn't look the same as the one we see in Morrowind and Oblivion, and Gentleman Jim didn't seem the type to screw over the entire guild for his own gain the way Mercer did. 184.16.195.112 21:46, 28 June 2015 (UTC)

Need help testing[edit]

Can anyone test if Skeleton Key can open those "Key Required" bookcases in The Arcaneum, College of Winterhold? Due0covid21 (talk) 11:38, 10 February 2024 (UTC)
