Glitched

How do you activate this quest for Vilkas and Farkas? — Unsigned comment by 87.221.60.32 (talk)

I received the quest from Vilkas after I did one of the standard sub-quests from him (killing a criminal) after completing the main quest, but for some reason it bugged out and ended the quest before I could complete it. It keeps doing so so I can't personally complete the quest, but maybe this is a problem only on the PS3. Lobsel Vith 17:38, 19 November 2011 (UTC)
Same for me bugged out said its complete, I cant find him anywhere in the tomb. =/ — Unsigned comment by 75.41.75.176 (talk)
This just happened to me too. For some strange reason the quest auto-completes after an acceptance. Are there any fixes for this? Also related is the fact that the Flame of the Harbinger will not work for me. For some reason it will not give me the prompt to fight the Wolf Spirit. I have enough Glenmoril Witch Heads to kill Farkas', Vilkas', and myself's Wolf Spirits. Any help on that too? — Unsigned comment by 70.173.124.101 (talk) at 23:28 on 27 November 2011 (UTC)
I have done 12 "radiant/repeatable" quests from Vilkas and Aela, but Farkas has no option to do any quests for him. Farkas only has the option to follow you. I also am unable to do Totems of Hircine because of this bug. I am forever stuck doing repeatable quests from Aela and Vilkas :( (99.136.224.214 01:25, 29 November 2011 (UTC))

() you have to have the witch's head in your inventory to ask him "is there any work to be done?" before this you have to do the criminal radiant quest. Beware! the purity quest is bugged as he will only follow you outside the Companion HQ before immediately going back in or doing his usual behaviour, also the purity quest will be grayed out and in the completed section even though it still says to travel to the tomb.the solution to the bug is to decline his purity quest and do aela's radiant quest and then farkas's quest will be unblocked and vilkas will be able to followe you, i haven't tested it out yet mnyself as i am curently having trouble with it but now i can try this solution out myself and see if it works 109.154.178.15 16:53, 30 November 2011 (UTC)

^^^THANK YOU!!!^^^ That information should be on the wiki page somewhere!!! I had no idea I needed the witch heads with me to start that quest. (99.136.224.214 04:34, 6 December 2011 (UTC))
hi folks, just stopping by to say that I haven't had any problem with this quest. I got the quest from farkas and he didn't follow me outside right away but once i fast traveled to ysgramor's tomb, there he was behind me ready to go. We went in, took care of the spirit and then left. THEN i went back and got the quest from vilkas as well. I did the same thing and it worked again. It's possible that it's not glitched on my game for some reason, but i had no issue completing it and i still have a witch head or two i think.
I activated and completed both Vilkas and Farkas quest by doing the following:
  • 1. Ask Aela to follow you.
  • 2. Have extra Glenmoril Witch heads in your inventory.
  • 3. Be in a different location where the NPC isn't.
  • 4. Type player.moveto 0001A693 for Farkas or player.moveto 0001A695 for Vilkas. This will move the NPC to your location.
  • 5. Speak to NPC. He'll ask you to help him cleanse his blood and follow you, replacing Aela.
There are a couple things wrong with that 1-5 guide. First, player.moveto moves you to the NPC, and player.placeatme moves the NPC to the player. When i tried the "moveto" command, Farkas followed me outside of Jorvasskr, then promptly turned around and went back inside, and my quest auto-completed. When i tried player.placeatme, Farkas showed up in front of me, but he had no quest dialogue and could only follow me. I can't complete Vilkas' Purity quest because after I kill his wolf spirit, I can't talk to him again, he just says things like "I never thought you would be Harbringer" and it won't let me complete the quest. With Farkas, I can't get him to follow me to the tomb, and I can't stop the quest from auto-completing. (99.136.224.214 04:34, 6 December 2011 (UTC))
That is for the pc though, the bug is on the 360 too and is driving me bonkers, i'm currently trying the other solution to see if it works. 109.154.178.15 17:09, 30 November 2011 (UTC)
just finished the purity quest with no bugs so i can more or less confirm that declining the purity quest first and then doing aela's mission works, although after this it was farkas that wanted the purity quest not vilkas but at least it works, now maybe i can access the totem quest. 109.154.178.15 17:19, 30 November 2011 (UTC)

() Are Vilkas and Farkas the only ones asking for Purity? Maybe that should be specified. Same goes for Totems quest(Being Aela only.), but that's for another page. ZeNinjaHawk 02:31, 3 December 2011 (UTC)

This is also bugged on the PC. Vilkas gave me the purity quest about 5 times, I go outside to Whiterun and he just goes back inside. The quest is cancelled and I can't use any followers. (it says I've got someone already) I solved it by talking to Farkas. --190.35.7.5 03:15, 8 February 2012 (UTC)
In case, like me, you can't make heads nor tails out of the advice above, here's a simplified version of how I got this to work:
  1. Background: Farkas wouldn't offer me jobs, and Vilkas only offers the Dragonseekers quest.
  2. Prep: Make sure you have at least one Glenmoril Witch Head in your inventory.
  3. Talk to Vilkas, and accept a Dragonseeker quest.
  4. Go kill the dragon.
  5. Talk to Vilkas afterward, and he'll tell you he's going to hang out with the dead dragon. Talk to him again right away, before you or he goes anywhere, and NOW, when asked about work, he'll mention something personal. Decline to help.
  6. Go find Farkas (yes, you can fast-travel now); talk to him, and you'll see the work dialogue option.
Purity Quest continues from here.
Yopparai 06:15, 2 April 2012 (UTC)
Having troubles with Vilkas and Farkas all together. I can't do anything with Farkas except marry him, get him to follow me, or ask him to train me. He won't follow me because Vilkas is technically following me from the glitch with the Purity quest. After receiving the Purity quest from Vilkas, he follows me outside of Jorvaskr, then goes back inside. If I travel to Ysgramor's Tomb, the compass shows a marker far away, and when I go to my quest log the Purity quest is counted as finished. If I go to speak to Vilkas again about work, he just gives me some random quest, then after a few of those asks me to cleanse him again. — Unsigned comment by 67.142.171.20 (talk) at 19:56 on 19 September 2012 (UTC)
I had the same problem with Vilkas and solved it very easy:
  • 1. Report the previos quest to Vilkas but do not ask more work from him.
  • 2. Have Aela as follower. This unlocks Farkas to give you quests!!!
  • 3. Purify Farkas first. You can fast travel.
  • 4. Purify Vilkas second. Now he will follow and you can fast travel.

Farkas and Vilkas

is this a glitch or is it supposed to be possible to do the purity quests for both people, i did farkas' purity quest first and eventually vilkas wanted me to cure him as well. 86.179.18.163 19:22, 10 December 2011 (UTC)

You cure them both. I did the dragonseekers quest for both of them, then I did the Purity quest for both of them. (99.136.224.214 19:38, 10 December 2011 (UTC))

Witch heads

I notice I still have 2 Witch Heads after finishing both purity quests on PS3. I thought each quest would consume one head. Is it a glitch? I did Farkas first then Vilkas without any bug. I can store/remove the heads from inventory though, so it is not a problem. (ZekunD 00:33, 13 December 2011 (UTC))

There are four possible purifications (At least on the PC version there are)... Kodlak, yourself, Vilkas, and Farkas. I guess Aela doesn't want to give up her doggie breath (good luck getting married with THAT, Aela!) Fadamor 06:05, 21 December 2011 (UTC)
Sorry, I didn't make it clear. I carried 2 heads on me and left 2 in storage inside my house. I did 2 purity quests. The two heads on me should be consumed. But they were not. So now, after both purity quests done, I still have a total of 4 heads. (ZekunD 03:27, 22 December 2011 (UTC))
I will confirm the above, as I have still 4 heads after doing the 2 purity quests. Gonna store them later in my house, heads are damn heavy :) — Unsigned comment by ZekunD (talkcontribs) at 05:37 on 2 January 2012
Not sure where to put this in the quest page, so it's going here: I left the heads in the chest in my Whiterun house and both with Vilkas and Farkas a head appeared in my inventory after accepting the Purity quests. No need to run back to the house to get one. Fadamor 05:58, 21 December 2011 (UTC)

Messy bug explanation (moved from article)

This section was originally aired on the main article; it is, however, incomprehensible and seems to contain several contradictions (along with 1st person wording). Placing it here until we can get this investigated:

  • To fix the bug that stops Vilkas from following you and auto completes and also fix Farkas not giving you quests, all you have to do is get up to Vilkas "Purity" mission but do not accept it, then go to Farkas and he will give you random repeatable missions. Do one of his missions then he will give you his "Purity" finish his quest. Now go back to Vilkas and accept his "Purity" mission and he will now follow you and it won't auto complete. Worked perfect for me twice so should work for everyone. good luck
    • As previously stated, first speak to Vilkas, he gives you a random quest, then he gives you his Purity quest (I had 2 Glenmoril Witch's head in inventory at that time). Decline his Purity quest. If Farkas doesn't gives you any quests after that

(the problem with Farkas has something to do with the following : If you don't actually finish the quest "Trouble in Skyrim", you will never be able to talk to Farkas(he gives said quest) for anything other than getting he to follow you, so essentially you will have 2 radiant companion quests going on if you don't do it and only Vilkas will eventually become available for "Purity" which is not what you want, Farkas has to be done first) take one of Aela's random quests and complete it. This will unblock Farkas random quest. Do it and then complete his Purity quest. When that's done, Vilkas will complete his Purity quest without a problem.

      • Following the fix as stated above WILL fix the Farkas/Vilkas following glitch. However, in my case, it may create more glitches. (Skjor may randomly appear back in Jorvaskr, and/or it may unlock the "Dragon Seekers" quest, even if the prerequisite quest has not been completed). If the above fix does unlock the "Dragon Seekers" quest and/or resurrects Skjor, load a previously saved game before progressing any further, and do not complete "Dragon Seekers" before completing the prerequisite quest and completing "Purity" for both brothers, or it may lock Farkas/Vilkas (whoever the first person you completed the dragon quest with) out of giving random quests.
        • The Glenmoril Witch's heads in your inventory is the KEY whether if this quest would be given to you,so make sure you are carrying the heads while you want to receive this quest. You need at least one head in your inventory to trigger this quest.

--Krusty 10:23, 28 December 2011 (UTC)

This worked for me! Farkas wouldn't give me quests, and Vilkas wouldn't follow me even after giving me the Purity Quest, so I reloaded and declined Vilkas's quest by choosing the 'This is your personal matter' or something like that. Then I went to Farkas, and again there was no option to give me a quest, so I did an Animal Extermination quest for Aela. When I returned and turned in the quest with Aela, Farkas gave me a Trouble in Skyrim quest! After that with the Witch Head in my inventory, I was offered his Purity Quest. I first cured Farkas, then Vilkas, and FINALLY had the option to cure myself (I had three heads). What a relief. Finally I can sleep without nightmares again! --Alkorri 14:18, 6 February 2012 (UTC)

Farkas Stuck

I can't complete the quest as Vilkas won't talk to me once I kill his Wolf spirit, and I can't complete Farkas' "Purity" quest first as he won't follow me because he won't leave the Shrine of Talos in Markarth, any suggestions? 94.1.197.16 21:11, 2 January 2012 (UTC)

Dragon seekers bug- has anyone had a situation where farkas has asked u on a dragon seekers quest and when you get to the location there is no dragon? Just the indicator? — Unsigned comment by 97.114.30.224 (talk) at 05:42 on 8 January 2012
Common error with the radiant quest system. if area has been previously kill boos may not respawn. only way to fix it is to reload a previous save or use console commands. — Unsigned comment by 64.126.90.132 (talk) at 07:29 on 6 February 2012
I suggest trying to use 'prid' command bring them back to whiterun and talk to them again. — Unsigned comment by 27.32.106.68 (talk) at 15:41 on 25 July 2013 (GMT)

Verifying "alternative" solution as posted on main page, but created other bugs

On 360 (I was getting the bug where Vilkas stopped folllowing me to Ysgramor's tomb): Just a note to say I followed the steps under "alternatively" to cure Farkas - worked for me. Then, I went back to Vilkas, but he just gave me another assignment to kill an escaped criminal. After reporting back to Vilkas and collecting payment on that contract I exited conversation from Vilkas and he started to run away, but I talked to Vilkas again and he offered the cure dialogue. I accepted and speed traveled to the tomb. Vilkas followed me and I was able to cure him. ---- However, I then saw Skjor in Jorrvaskr (was previously killed by Silver Hands), so I got the bug as mentioned above by Krusty. Also, when Farkas gave the Trouble in Skyrim quest to clear out spriggans from Roadside Ruins the spriggans weren't there, only two dead bandits. No clue how far back I need to go to clean all of this up. Will probably ignore Companions for a while.... — Unsigned comment by 198.228.222.107 (talk) at 06:48 on 12 January 2012

Repeating Radiant instead of offering Purity

The stack of witch heads in your inventory might of been bugged and so Farkas and Vilkas will only offer their radiant quests. On the 360 I faced the repeating radiants with both Farkas and Vilkas, and both times simply dropping a witch head on the ground and picking it back up allowed me to purify both of them. Unfortunately the same trick failed to work on getting Aela to offer her Totem quests. — Unsigned comment by 173.58.43.26 (talk) at 21:58 on 12 January 2012

Any way to actually FIX the bug after the damage has been done?

so i started this quest weeks ago...haven't been able to get a follower since, as, apparently vilkas is already following me (and when i talk to him to ask for him to follow he says somebody else already is -_-). Not a single person in the companions' place will talk to me other than training and "follow me. i need your help." EVEN if i have the heads in my inventory. "Purity" is complete in my log with incomplete objectives. I couldn't give less of a crap about finishing the companions line, but i want to be able to get a follower...any fix? — Unsigned comment by 71.187.156.27 (talk) at 23:40 on 16 January 2012

Confirmed cure; I had the same problem, the quest was considered completed while none of the objectives were really completed, there's nothing you can do to change that, but however it is still possible to have a functioning follower after this, all u have to do is to ask either farkas or vilkas (the one who gave u the quest) again for some work, since he wasn't really purified as the objectives were incomplete, you will be able to get a second purity quest from the same person, use the console "setstage CR13 100" to finish the quest, then you will be free to recruit a new follower from now on. ---------- alabataille 10:55 20/01/12
Thanks for the response. I don't know what compelled me to do it, but I left out the fact that I play on the Ps3 version of the game, and therefore the console doesn't exist for me. This will probably be useful for other people who have the same problem. The pc version seems to be much more versatile. If there's no in-game maneuvering to be done I have a feeling an inevitable (and painstakingly delayed) patch will fix this. — Unsigned comment by 71.187.156.27 (talk) at 23:39 on 25 January 2012

() Secondary Workaround (PC) There is another way to partially fix the problem. This will cleanse you, Vilkas, and Falkas only. It doesn't seem to fix the bug with Aela though.

  1. If you wish to cure yourself be sure to do so first. If you having problems as I was then what you can do is go to Ysgramor's Tomb and stand before the fire. Bring up the console and type "setstage CR06 200" (without quotes). This will re-complete the main quest (giving you 300 gold in the process). Try to activate the fire. Sometimes you will find you have to type "setstage CR6 200" a second time. I've never had to do it more than once for it to work. That then completes cleansing your character.
  2. I spoke with Vilkas next. Complete his quest to kill the escaped convict and then return to speak with him as normal. When you leave if he turns around let him. Go back and before speaking with him type "setstage CR13 15" this will give you the quest portion to free him from the wolf spirit again. He now should automatically start following you again. I tried it a few times and never had problems, but if you do I suggest doing the "setstage CR13 15" again.
  3. At this point you shouldn't have to do anything special to complete Falkas' quest. Just complete his normal quest and he should follow and complete with no problems. — Unsigned comment by Sorwen (talkcontribs) at 21:30 on 29 January 2012
Fix for PC; I had this problem on the PC skyrim. None of the other solutions worked as the quest had auto-completed (with unfinished objectives), I could not ask for work from the companions, and had lost my previous saves. I was able to work around it by using the console to start another companions quest. "setstage cr14 10" teamed me up with Farkas and started the quest Dragon Seekers. I then completed the quest using the console commands step by step (setstage cr14 20, setstage cr14 200). This let me get work from the companions again, but still no new followers. So I did a few companions jobs until I could get the purity quest from Farkas. He "replaced my follower," and I was all set. — Unsigned comment by 108.227.120.22 (talk) at 06:57 on 1 February 2012

Bug on PS3

I have just encountered this bug on the PS3 (before I realized there was a bug) :-(
My character is married to Vilkas so usually keep him at home to earn money/sell things to and occasionally ask for work. I prefer to use Vorstag as my follower. But Vilkas gave me the quest to kill the dragon at Shearpoint. When that was complete and I asked for more work, he asked me to cure him. I had been in a marathon session before this and saved my file, overwriting the previous one. DUMB, I know!
I can take Vilkas to the tomb and defeat his wolf spirit no problem. I can't complete "Talk to Vilkas". There is nothing quest-related in the dialog menu. He's not a true follower so I can't dismiss him and he won't carry anything for me. He doesn't give me the option to request new work. Farkas gives options to train or follow but if I select follow he says I already have someone and the dialog ends. Same with trying to hire Vorstag. Nothing gets rid of Vilkas. Farkas will not give me any work either. And suddenly Skjor is back from the dead.
If there is no way to fix this, my only alternative is to revert to a save file from before the marathon session (includes elder knowledge right through to killing alduin). Not something I'm interested in replaying. So if Bethesda has no fix for this, I'm afraid my Skyrim days are done. — Unsigned comment by 71.7.173.131 (talk) at 22:05 on 28 January 2012

overcome the vilkas and companion glitch xbox

xbox 360) If you have already talked to vilkas about curing him and he wont leave Jorrvaskr then try this. Walk back in and talk to vilkas, purity quest should be in the completed bin, When you talk to him he should offer you work if he does accept it and finish the misson he gives you. When you finish the misson you should be able to get work from farkas and aela now. talk to farkes and he will ask you to cure him, take farkes to the site and cure him you should be able to have a companion now. once you cure farkas you can talk to vilkas and do purity with him without him bugging out — Unsigned comment by 98.235.92.158 (talk) at 07:12 on 5 February 2012

This method worked perfectly for me, thank you :) 71.181.70.98 23:44, 26 April 2012 (UTC)

A Question Regarding the Bug

I've taken to reading the UESP entries before clearing any dungeons or completing any quests, so as to avoid as few bugs as possible. I was of course concerned about getting snagged on this chain. I don't know if it's worth noting, but I completed the purification for Farkas first and Vilkas second, hassle-free. I went with Farkas first because the bug appeared, from the conversation here and on the article page, to arise when one started with Vilkas. Can anyone confirm that this is in fact the source of the problem? If so, it might save many players time to simply know "I should talk to Farkas first." Thanks for your thoughts in advance. Bryteline 03:23, 8 February 2012 (UTC)

Update: I just met up with Vilkas in Winterhold, of all places. I fast-traveled there after beginning a new quest and after standing around for a few minutes, he sprinted into the city and back out. What is going on?! Bryteline 03:47, 8 February 2012 (UTC)
Small follow-up: I caught up with Vilkas, added him as a companion, immediately dismissed him, waited for 12 hours, then fast-traveled back to Whiterun. He was back where he was supposed to be. If you encounter this bug, I hope that solution works for you as well. Bryteline 03:51, 8 February 2012 (UTC)
Vilkas and Ria can be found wandering Skyrim. This isn't actually a bug AFAIK. The page for Ria mentions this. Razorsoup 22:05, 11 February 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the heads-up Razorsoup. Bryteline 02:10, 13 February 2012 (UTC)

Work Around the glitch

I didn't see this listed above, so figured I would add it here :

  1. I tried this a few times, and found that the issue continues, regardless the door you go through, upstairs, or downstairs. I DID find a way around this however, WITHOUT console commands, on the PC.
  2. About 1pm-2pm-ish in the afternoon (Sometimes later), they tend to be outside for a bit of workout time in the workout yard out back. Try to turn in your quests to them at this time. When they are outside, they don't have an issue with the door. They will then start the quest, like normal, and NOT have issues dealing with the doors, which are what causes the glitches.
  3. I cured both of them with this approach.
  4. In THEORY, it should work for all systems, if you use this tactic/method. :)

Hope this Helps. :) — Unsigned comment by 75.64.123.160 (talk) at 03:11 on 27 February 2012

Vilkas silent after completing Purity for Farkas

I've encountered a rather annoying bug, which seems different from what I've read here. I cleansed Farkas quite a while ago, and have completed all three totem quests for Aela. But even after completing many, many radiant quests Vilkas still won't speak with me. I have glenmoril heads in my inventory, I have done dragonseeker multiple times with Farkas, but still Vilkas won't offer me any radiant, dragonseeker or purity quests. I've tried resetting the Purity quest, but it doesn't seem to change. Any idea's on how to fix this? Doing quests for Aela and Farkas doesn't seem to be fixing it :( — Unsigned comment by 121.222.176.2 (talk) at 16:08 on 28 February 2012

It should be noted that I can see the "I'm looking for Work" option on Vilkas only when I'm on another companion quest, so I can't use it >_> — Unsigned comment by 121.222.176.2 (talk) at 17:57 on 28 February 2012
i had something like this. i cant get any of the purity quests, and i think it has something to do with getting the heads removed from your invatory during diplomatic immunity. — Unsigned comment by 184.63.15.232 (talk) at 20:17 on 11 May 2012
I am experiencing the same bug, exactly as described except I have only completed one totem quest. I cleansed Farkas a long, long time ago. I cannot get any radiant or other quests from Vilkas as the "looking for work" option does not appear in his dialog. (PC) --70.23.72.160 16:44, 21 May 2012 (UTC)
I also have the same bug. Apparently, we were supposed to decline Farkas' Purity quest first, and then it would unlock it for Vilkas. But since we already purified Farkas, it seems that it is now impossible for Vilkas to offer any quests. I have yet to find a solution to this annoying bug. — Unsigned comment by 71.108.67.71 (talk) at 02:04 on 9 December 2012 (GMT)

Possible Solution for Repeating Radiant Quests

I got stuck with the repeating radiant quests as well, and I figured out a way to get the Purity quest to initiate, at least by Farkas. I had 2 witch heads in my inventory, and before I entered the living quarters where Farkas was, I dropped both of them, getting them to get the "quest items cannot be dropped" when I picked them back up again. Then, I entered the living quarters. When I talked to Farkas, then he initiated the dialogue. It seems the heads need to be dropped BEFORE entering the area where they are, or the quest dialogue won't initiate. — Unsigned comment by 69.255.145.146 (talk) at 07:49 on 13 March 2012

A solution to Vilkas purity and No follower ps3 without reloading a save file.

I ran into the Vilkas glitch and saved over my file before I realized there was a glitch. So I went to the tomb and tried to activate the flame to cure him, obviously it did not work because of a glitch. Then I went back and spoke with him again there was an option asking for work so I did it. After which he gave me a job I did the job, returned to Vilkas and got my reward. I then asked Farkas about work he gave me a job for an escape criminal. I killed the criminal went back talk to Farkas, when I asked for work this time Farkas asked me to purify him. I accepted the job and left when I was went to the tomb Farkas was following me. I freed him and then freed myself. Then I returned to Vilkas and asked if there was any work. He offered me a job for an escaped criminal. I then killed the criminal, and returned to talk to Vilkas. Vilkas then again gave me the purity mission. this time he followed me, and I was able to complete the Purity mission and I can have followers now. I hope this helps others like myself who thought it was hopeless.

Solution to Vilkas glitch

  1. On PCThis fix is for the glitch involving Vilkas where he is locked to you as a follower and you cannot get rid of him by telling him to "part ways." This is most likely after you takeon the "Dragon Seeker" quest with him and cannot complete it because you already cleared the Bonestrewn Crest mound. It is not confirmed to work with the glitch where Vilkas chases you around as a broken guard trying to collect a bounty. It is also not confirmed if it works in reverse with Farkas as the glitched follower. Anyway, to cure the glitch:
    1. Create a manual save file before proceeding so you can go back and try again if something fails
    2. This isn't necessary but be outside Jorvaskr to make sure its working right
    3. Vilkas must be locked to you and prevent you from getting work from the other Companions
    4. Enter the command "resetquest cr14" into the console, this resets the "Dragonseeker Quest" with him; Vilkas will leave you alone and go inside Jorvaskr and no longer follow you but still not allow you a new follower
    5. Enter the command "setstage cr13 200" to complete the "Purity" quest with Vilkas that is being glitchy; it is actually active in the background but does not appear in the COMPLETE or INCOMPLETE quest lists
    6. You will now be allowed to seek jobs from other Companion members
    7. IMMEDIATELY go find Farkas inside Jorvaskr
    8. Ask him for work, he may do one of two things:
      1. Whine about never seeing a dragon and give you his "Dragon Seeker" quest
        1. If "Dragon Seeker" enables, fast travel to Northwind Summit (it was for me atleast)
        2. IMMEDIATELY talk to him and he should start talking about something that is bothering him ("Purity" quest) even if there is a dragon trying to kill you both
        3. If this doesn't happen reload your save file and try again
        4. The "Purity" quest will now enable
      2. Immediately say something is bothering him and give you his "Purity" quest
        1. If "Purity" enables, then proceed as normal
    9. Once his "Purity" quest enables he will REMOVE your other follower (Vilkas) and become your new follower
    10. Go to the Tomb of Ysgramor and proceed to the cleansing fire
    11. Place a witch's head into the fire and fight Farkas' wolf spirit and kill it
    12. Talk to Farkas and ask him if "he is alright" and complete the quest
      1. At this point you can purify yourself if you want
    13. Go to another companion and "follow me" should no longer be grayed out
    14. CREATE A MANUAL SAVE FILE
    15. Attempt the "Purity" quest with Vilkas at your own risk now

Has this actually worked for anybody? I did each step and Vilkas still wont give me the quest. — Unsigned comment by 108.28.6.219 (talk) at 19:40 on 31 October 2012

further glitches with vilkas and purity.

I have the same vilkas glitch and it is so annoying. I've tried anyestions on here but its still not working. I keep trying to get the dragon quest off vilkas but apparently he's already given me a job...but he hasn't...I've scrolled through all missions and after 'purity' the silly quest that ruined my game I haven't done anything for the companions since. So if anyone has an answer for this I would be very grateful. — Unsigned comment by 31.114.139.177 (talk) at 02:32 on 12 July 2012 (UTC)

vilkas and purity

I had the usual problem with vilkas but strangely the quest moved to my completed section without having completed the objective as if I used console commands to complete it. — Unsigned comment by 82.73.72.148 (talk) at 19:27 on 22 July 2012 (UTC)

further glitch

I have killed the wolf spirit for vilkas tried to talk to him all he offers is training he is not flowing me but everyone thinks he is how if there is anything that will help me??? — Unsigned comment by 75.255.194.191 (talk) at 18:09 on 5 November 2012 (GMT)

Vilkas glitch

I had no problems getting Vilkas to Ysgramor's Tomb. He followed me out of Jorvaskr and everything. I even killed the Wolf Spirit for Vilkas and the objective changed to "Talk to Vilkas" but when I tried to talk to him he was completely oblivious to what had just happened and only offered training.

A little background: I started the quest immediately after I killed the dragon with him, I had 2 Glenmoril Witch Heads in my inventory. And I was also suffering from another glitch where all of the Companions would hound me and start conversations with their weapons drawn. I looked into that one and it was supposedly because they're designed as guards and since I had a bounty they did that. I paid my bounty in Whiterun (of 15 septim) and it changed nothing. Whatever, I went onward anyways since there was apparently no fix to it and now this. The glitches in this game are really starting to annoy me. Thinking about putting it down forever. Help? — Unsigned comment by 69.124.96.44 (talk) at 00:40 on 25 November 2012

Prevent Vilkas/Farkas glitch

I've found that the glitch does not appear if you do the purity quests basically immediately after completing the Companions questline (i.e. going to Ysgramor's tomb and returning). Only complete the Totems of Hircine and the radiant quests from Aela/Farkas/Vilkas between finishing the questline and doing the Purity quests. By following this, I've found that the glitch does not appear. Obviously this isn't going to help anyone who's already completed quests in between, but hopefully if this information is deemed useful it can be added to the page and perhaps prevent other people from running into this issue. Unable to Cleanse Self

Isn't completing the Purity quests for the brothers supposed to give you another opportunity to cleanse yourself? I just took a ton of time to complete the purity quest but now I still can't activate the Flame. Note that I'm using Dawnguard and this is my second time with Lycanthropy, however I figured cleansing myself again would still be possible... — Unsigned comment by BlackhawkXIII (talkcontribs) at 04:23 on 5 February 2013

(PS3 user) I can't speak from my own experience, but I noticed on the Skyrim: Werewolf talk pages (archive 4) that several users discussed this topic. According to them, they also couldn't use the witches' heads to cure themselves after re-acquiring lycanthropy. However, they suggested that becoming a vampire should serve as a werewolf cure(apparently Serana, for one, offers this option as part of the Dawnguard storyine). You could then cure the vampirism (using Falion's quest, e.g.) if desired.MrC (talk) 22:15, 7 March 2013 (GMT)
Edit - I can now verify that it works. Serana made my character a vampire lord, which removed the lycanthropy, and then Falion's quest cured the vampirism. MrC (talk) 14:13, 19 March 2013 (GMT)
I had specifically hoped to use the Flame of the Harbinger again to exploit a glitch that allows you to become both a werewolf and a vampire. It seems that doing so isn't possible but thanks anyway. --BlackhawkXIII (talk) 15:33, 19 March 2013 (GMT)

Just Finished Both Vilas and Farkas Quest on PS3 w/ Bug

Firstly,

Most of the solutions above didn't really work for me although I did do most of this stuff in order.

1.Having Aela in my party did seem to activate quests for Farkas.

a) I've already completed the first Totems of Hircine quest.

2.Even after curing Farkas, Vilkas would still not follow me.

a) I noticed that Vilkas/Farkas seem to offer the cure quest only when they're inside of Jorvaskr.
(not 100% confirmed)

My Fix: I finished the Purify quest for Farkas. Next, I talked to Vilkas and he gave me the Purify quest dialogue. I reloaded the autosave and asked him to follow me instead of initiating any quest dialogue. I fast traveled to the Tomb, entered the hall withe the Flame, made sure Vilkas was standing very close to me and initiated the Purify quest dialogue. Very quickly, I activated the flame, killed the wolf and the quest was completed. I don't know if I was lucky that Vilkas actually offered me the quest dialogue when I was in the Flame room of the Tomb but it worked. This is after turning down the Purify quest at least once before with Vilkas when he was at Jorvaskr because he just wouldn't follow me. I also completed a bunch of trivial Companions quests before this, too. I hope this helps. — Unsigned comment by 172.5.217.218 (talk) at 23:42 on 18 April 2013 (GMT)

Witch's heads are glitched

I'm not certain if this is the reason the purity quests don't get offered in all cases but they should not be able to be removed. I dropped them and stored them and took them back. Sometimes after taking them back you cannot drop them again and they are called quest items as they should be. Other times, after doing this they still aren't called quest items. It seems that storing them in a chest of some sort is more likely to lock them as a quest item. This did solve the purity glitch for me the once. But right now, I'm in a loop of getting assignments and not getting it offered it to me and the heads keep reverting from quest items that are locked in my inventory to regular items and I'm certain that they have to be 'quest' locked because you cannot do any quests without quest locked items. It appears that going though the doors and traveling makes the heads no longer quest items. And they have to be 'quest locked' not able to drop to trigger the quest offering. — Unsigned comment by 70.172.216.224 (talk) at 20:45 on 24 May 2013

Solution:
~ Report to whomever you got your last quest from to complete it. Then drop the witch heads and retrieve them. Make sure they are not removable and called quest inventory. Then go to whomever you wish to do purity BUT do not go though any doors or the heads won't be quest locked and it might get glitched again. If the person you want to do purity with isn't in the main hall of the house where you return to report on the last quest they gave you, just wait. Don't go through doors. Wait for them to arrive. I was able to report to Falkas then drop the heads/retrieve them having them become quest locked then walk right over to him again and ask him for work and finally get the purity quest. Always check the status of the heads to be sure they are quest locked when approaching one of the brothers. If they aren't, drop them and pick them up until they are. Don't go through doors. Stay where you are. Also, for me, Falkas always came first. Not sure why. But going to him first does it. Finally, to get Vilkas to request the purity you have to wait 48 hours. I tried right after doing Falkas' but he just offered work. Then I remembered in a previous play a few days had past as I went on other quests then went to Vilkas and go the quest. The lines to get the quest are different. You'll know right away. It's not the standard asking for work. It's phrased differently. So if you purify Falkas, return to the house, drop the heads and retrieve them to quest lock them then check on Vilkas and if he just offers work back out of the conversation and wait 48 hours. I did 24 hours twice but after the first 24 hours still got standard work. 48 is the time frame, two days. Then he offered it. And ALWAYS check the heads to make sure they are quest items and locked can cannot be dropped before talking to either of them. They must be locked as quest items. When I didn't get offered the quest, I would check and sure enough they were removable and not quest items. — Unsigned comment by 70.172.216.224 (talk) at 21:31 on 24 May 2013
