Theory[edit]

From this post. Edited the wiki with the relevant portion.

She is a follower npc with a default relationship of acquaintance (found with the console command 'getrelationshiprank player' when Illia's id is selected) that prevents her from normally being recruited. Completing her recruitment quest gains some other flag that lets her become recruitable one time. After that since she is still with the acquaintance relationship towards the player, it blocks her normal follower dialogue that lets you re-recruit her. Changing her relationship higher ('player.setrelationshiprank <target> <rank>' where target would be Illia's id and rank(-4..4) should be 4(follower)) fixes the issue allowing her to be dismissable and recruitable like any regular follower. — Unsigned comment by 24.253.69.234 (talk) at 23:42 on 20 November 2011

Regarding the bug, I found that you could recruit and dismiss her with no problems up until you save and load a game. — Unsigned comment by 41.27.128.232 (talk) at 19:22 on 3 February 2012

Questions[edit]

Is there a list somewhere of the quests that might dismiss companions? Im playing on 360 so I cant do console commands and it would be really useful to know ahead of time which quests could make me lose her. 71.181.58.185 15:10, 10 December 2011 (UTC)

Marriage Options[edit]

Is anyone aware if she's actually an option for marriage? Obviously her glitch makes her highly unuseful, and makes it difficult to tell, but a marriable Illia... I do hope Bethesda implement that. — Unsigned comment by 90.212.107.140 (talk) at 18:54 on 25 December 2011

She's not listed as an option on the Marriage page. That info's taken from the official game guide, so it's high unlikely she can be married. Minor Edits 23:01, 25 December 2011 (UTC)
Solution
You can in fact marry Illia and keep her as follower on the PC version if you bring up the Skyrim:Console and change her faction and relationship status with the player.
  1. Open up console and select Illia.
  2. 'addfac 19809 1' - Adds selected actor to PotentialMarriageFaction.
  3. 'setrelationshiprank player 4' - Adds selected actor relationship with the player to maximum, which is 4 (follower).
  4. If you still haven't got the Amulet of Mara, get it and wear it.
  5. You can ask Illia's hand in marriage. After the ceremony you can also ask her to follow you. — Unsigned comment by 193.40.10.178 (talk) at 02:07 on 3 January 2012

Illia, Master of Magic[edit]

At her level cap of 40, she is much stronger than the average L30 mage follower from the Winterhold area. J'Zargo can hit L81, but his AI seems to hold him back... not so good. I mined these stats and other details for Illia using getav, hasperk and hasspell in the console, pc version:

Skills and Attributes

  • 425 health, 310 magicka
  • 100 Destruction and Restoration
  • 73 Alteration and Conjuration
  • 44 Sneak

Spells and Perks

  • Destruction Perks
    • Augmented Frost 2
  • Destruction Spells
    • Ice Storm
  • Restoration Perks
    • Regeneration
    • Respite
    • Ward Absorb
  • Restoration Spells
    • Healing
  • Alteration Perks
    • Magic Resistance 2
    • Mage Armor 3
  • Alteration Spells
    • (none found)
  • Conjuration Perks and Spells
    • None
  • Sneak Perks
    • None

Notes: During her quest I thought she had an ice spear, ward and mage armor spells, but as a follower I find a highly augmented ice storm and a self-heal instead. Perhaps I missed some non-standard spells? Regardless, Ice Storm with Augmented Frost 2 is brutal.

So yes. Illia, is quite impressive. - Cirian. (forgot to sign first time ^^) 79.87.202.92 12:10, 15 January 2012 (UTC)

Inducting Illia into the blades seems to fix her recruiting problems.[edit]

I inducted Illia to the blades and I have no problems getting her to follow me again once I dismiss her. I am on pc, if someone on the console would verify that this works for them as well? Bah, this seems to no longer work after I loaded again... --Berserkenstein 09:41, 14 January 2012 (UTC)--

Have you tried Dragon Hunting with her to see if there's a solution there?--RumblePen 09:25, 12 March 2012 (UTC)

Unable to recruit at all[edit]

I'm unable to recruit her AT ALL... Not just once. She stands still in the first room inside and only says "Huh?" and "Good morning." --Mikeytalkemail 10:33, 5 February 2012 (UTC)

Same here. Happened with patch 1.5. Only did the quest after patch 1.5. I spoke to her after the quest until I got the "Follow me, I need your help" option, but never used the option (I had a follower already). Now she just respond "what do you need?" things like that to me. The Bugs section says this problem has been solved after patch 1.4? Not really at all. — Unsigned comment by 210.195.246.206 (talk) at 09:07 on 31 March 2012
Yeah, still broken as of 1.6. She's also never at the Darklight Tower. To get her back I always have to use some console magic. — Unsigned comment by 24.18.44.54 (talk) at 19:26 on 7 July 2012
The options worked fine for me on 1.6. I did her quest, but I didn't pursue the "You could come with me" dialogue option, then I recruited her for the blades considerably later on. She was still wandering around the area where her mother was during the quest; and had her post quest dialogue options still too.--Playerseekingbugs 06:47, 29 July 2012 (UTC)
Update: I've recruited her immediately while playing through the game with a different character, and she now just wanders the Temple and gives no dialogue options. Having her sent to help me slay a dragon doesn't help.--Playerseekingbugs (talk) 22:00, 12 March 2013 (GMT)

Possible source of recruitment issues[edit]

After looking around in the Creation Kit a bit, I discovered that Illia is a "templated actor", which means she derives some of her character information from a different actor. According to the Creation Kit wiki, templated actors do not save relationship data, which would explain why Illia suffers from recruitment problems after each play session. When you complete Illia's quest, she gains relationship rank 3 "ally" with the player, which makes her a follower, but because she is templated this information is not permanently saved, and thus her relationship rank returns to default after saving/loading. 75.3.155.15 03:01, 15 February 2012 (UTC)

Yes, the fact that she is based on a template, the "Unique" flag can not be set on her. This, I suppose, is what causes the recruiting the problem. Some data isn't stored in a save for non-unique actors apparently. --Kinlar (talk) 15:33, 19 March 2013 (GMT)

Better robes.[edit]

Is it possible get this wonderful creature to wear better robes than the her default mage robes? I bought Master robes of Destruction for her but when I give it to her she is not putting it on, and she won't put on armor either. Is there any way to make her wear something else? I'm on the Xbox 360 by the way. 72.68.154.112 13:00, 29 March 2012 (UTC)

Try telling her to pick up the robes, then tell her to wait. Fast travel away, wait a bit, then go back to where you left her. She should be wearing the robes she picked up. This often works with followers equipping clothes - no promises, though. Kitkat TalkContribE-mail 13:11, 29 March 2012 (UTC)
This worked for me in 1.7 on the PC. 96.255.47.244 15:56, 12 August 2012 (UTC)
Thank you for the tip, even though I eventually got her to wear the robes Ill be sure to try this with other followers, because now that I have dismissed Illia she won't follow me anymore. They really need to patch this glitch because if they did she would be one of the best followers in the game. :( 72.68.154.112 02:42, 31 March 2012 (UTC)
If you're not averse to using console commands, try this: "Removeitem D1F3B 1". D1F3B is the blue mage robes that she's wearing. After that she should wear the first armor/clothes you give her. ForsakenOne 12:21, 9 April 2012 (UTC)
This did not work for me as described. I put in the command in the console and it said item didnt exist. It's possible I am simply inept with the console, but it ddint work for me. Again, this was in 1.7 on the PC. 96.255.47.244 15:56, 12 August 2012 (UTC)
I found that giving her a circlet to wear along with the master robes (or other article of clothing) will usually make her stop wearing her hooded blue robes and equip whatever other clothes you give her instead. Especially the "Diadem of the Savant" circlet because it has an armor rating and followers will always equip whatever item has higher base armor. 71.168.76.120 23:46, 21 February 2013 (GMT)
She never takes off the Daedra armor I gave her. — Unsigned comment by 159.53.46.140 (talk) at 20:33 on 27 February 2013

() If you'd like her to wear better robes or armor, you must first equip her with any headgear. — Unsigned comment by 107.219.68.146 (talk) at 00:57 on 13 March 2017

For mage followers, better robes don't really help that much. If you look at how enchanted armor/clothes work for followers, none of the Fortify "X" enchants apply a bonus. If you have a robe that boosts health or magicka, or adds regen bonus, those will work. Otherwise changing robes is all cosmetic. — Unsigned comment by 159.140.252.97 (talk) at 16:01 on 20 October 2017

Not Fixed by 1.4[edit]

According to Illia's page, her problem with being unable to follow you again was supposed to have been fixed by the 1.4 patch, ("You will not experience this bug after the ver. 1.4 patch"), yet I cannot get her to rejoin.

I am playing on the 360 version, which unless I'm mistaken should not have any difference when it is a bug considered to have been fixed by a patch. I am also playing on a character who prior to a few minutes ago had not encountered Illia, (due to the fact that I didn't want to recruit her if I would lose her services after she left). Is the bug still existent or was it actually fixed by the 1.4 patch and it's just that my game hates me? ---Gamer3427 21:01, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

EDIT: Experienced the same bug with another character that I didn't create until after the 1.5 patch. I even had her join the Blades, but once I saved and reloaded later on, she was no longer available as a follower, instead choosing to repeat the standard "Blade lines" every time I tried to talk to her. I'll try again with another new character after I've downloaded Dawnguard. If it still occurs, then I'm going to remove the statement about the 1.4 patch, as no one can confirm this information, and it's not listed as being fixed in the patch notes...... ---Gamer3427 19:13, 2 July 2012 (UTC)

Can anyone confirm if she's fixed or not? Bought Skyrim about two months ago. It's a shame that I still can't use my favorite follower to date. -naledgeborn 12:30, 10 July 2012
An IP posted in an above section that it is still broken with 1.6 on the Xbox. The Silencer speaksTalk 16:48, 10 July 2012 (UTC)
I officially removed that note from her page, as no one can confirm it in the slightest.... ---Gamer3427 22:23, 27 July 2012 (UTC)
As of 1.5 I can rehire her whenever. I also inducted her into the blades whether that changes anything.KingKTalk 18:41, 6 August 2012 (UTC)
That depends, have you quit the game and reloaded since then? Having her join the Blades did fix her for me, at least until I quit the game and went to play it again. After that, she was broken again.......
EDIT: As of version 1.8, she is still broken, even after recruiting her into the Blades, though there may be a possible fix. (See the "Lakeview Manor Housecarl" section below.) ---Gamer3427 19:12, 10 August 2012 (UTC)
1.9 and still broken. Blades induction had no effect. — Unsigned comment by 174.4.12.181 (talk) at 02:35 on 11 November 2013

Lakeview Manor Housecarl[edit]

I had just finished Illia's side quest, and had her as a follower. When approaching Lakeview (Hearthfire player home in Falkreath) she approached and requested to be the home's steward. I don't know where there's a list of followers who will approach like that, so I put this here. — Unsigned comment by 108.88.129.132 (talk) at 21:06 on 14 October 2012‎

Thanks for the info. Currently, the information is listed on the Followers page, with a checkmark column for steward eligibility. However, it would also be appropriate to note the information on each individual NPC page for those eligible, as is done for potential followers and marriage partners. — ABCface 00:13, 15 October 2012 (GMT)
One question, does this fix her inability to be re-recruited as a follower? Unfortunately I learned that she would be able to be a steward after I had already inducted her into the Blades, (simply because I wanted a good third person as a member of the Blades), and can't speak with her again to try and take her to a Hearthfire house. If it does, (including after you have re-loaded the game), then this should be listed on her main page as a possible fix to the recruitment bug, and if it doesn't, then does she still offer the steward dialogue options after reloading, or does she simply continue to have her generic quotes as she normally does once she's been dismissed and reloaded? If it's the latter, then perhaps a warning should also be placed on both her page and the section on the stewards page regarding the Hearthfire DLC. I would test this myself, but as I am in the middle of working on building my character up before I start on the Dragonborn DLC, it may be a while before I can start a new character to test this out..... Gamer3427 (talk) 00:24, 16 December 2012 (GMT)
I have her as my steward for the Morthal plot, and while she does have the appropriate steward dialogue, she is still not interested in being a follower again. Just another bug Bethesda isn't interested in fixing. If you play on consoles, then you still only have one shot at having her where you'd like her to be. 98.165.191.39 17:21, 30 December 2012 (GMT)

Ways to Circumvent Illia's Recruitment Issues[edit]

Would it be possible to drop multiple sets of items/armor until she picks one of them up to boost her disposition? Ayustam (talk) 18:14, 13 April 2013 (GMT)

I don't think this would be a fix to the problem, but if it is, it could be useful to find out. But, given the information presented in the discussion above titled, "Possible source of recruitment issues", even if this does work, it would just be a temporary fix and you would have to do it once again every time you reloaded the game after dismissing her. However, also based on this discussion, I'm not sure if dropping items to boost her disposition would improve her relationship towards the player so that she would provide the proper dialogue. If that was the case I would think that it would be possible to get anyone in the game, (or at least any potential followers), to follow you just by doing this repeatedly...... Gamer3427 (talk) 02:06, 28 July 2014 (GMT)

Inventory Resets over time[edit]

I made her the steward of lakeview manor, and knew of the follower bug that gives you a one time shot of getting her set up save for reverse pickpocketing. Over a period of time coming back and forth I discovered her inventory reset back to a default random unsmithed dagger, which was dwarven. The only remaining item left in her inventory was the hag's wraith. I suspect might be a permanent or persistent item, or just has an interesting relationship with this npc. Probably quest related but I can't confirm as this is on the PS3. I tried testing this after 18 days time away from the cell. Time didn't seem to factor in the reset but amount of time you visit your home from my experience. I ended up abandoning hope in preventing her from resetting as going down the thrall route just left permanent or persistent items intact; while everything else like the rose artifact summoning staff would be lost. Later on after giving up on her, I found her inventory keeps on resetting. What was a dwarven dagger became an iron one. I don't believe this a stewart bug as its been exclusive to her. The bard, housecarl, and wife have been unaffected. BlackOp (talk) 16:10, 19 April 2013 (GMT)

This is probably directly related to the "Possible source of recruitment issues" tag above, which explains that her re-recruitment issues comes from the fact that she uses a "template character" profile which means that she herself is completely reset. This probably also causes her inventory to reset as well thus resulting in the loss of items...... Gamer3427 (talk) 01:13, 30 July 2014 (GMT)

Personal Steward Issue[edit]

I did not run into the follower issue. After I completed the Repentance quest she did follow me to Lakeview Manor. Once there she prompted me to become my personal steward. However once I accepted this, when I talk to her only her original scripting comes up, "By the gods, I know this looks bad." I have only the discussion prompts of: "You killed her" and "what is this place?". It is also effecting my ability to recruit Rayya as a follower as she states I already have one. Is there a console fix for this or should I just go back to boring Rayya as the steward? Whoman69 (talk) 01:50, 16 August 2015 (UTC)

I've run into the same problem at Windstad Manor. I'd love to know if there's a fix. EDIT - You just need to go through all the dialogue again ("You killed her" -> "Why did she need to die?" etc.), then her regular dialogue should reappear. Vicano (talk) 22:47, 17 August 2015 (UTC)
Open the console and type setstage dunDarklightQST 60. Somehow the quest stage is reset to 0 after it is finished.

Alternate Weapons[edit]

I have armed Illia with an upgraded crossbow and an enchanted sword, along with several staves. But I have yet to see her use the blade or crossbow. She'll draw the sword, and have a staff or spell in the other hand, but I haven't seen her use the crossbow ever. Does she not use missile weapons? Will she eventually use the sword I gave her? Or is it completely pointless and I should load her up on staves. (I have a similar issue with Serana, but that's not always a problem.) FMPhoenixHawk (talk) 22:21, 21 February 2021 (UTC)
