Horse[edit]

Do we add the horse to this page? — Unsigned comment by Wolfy (talkcontribs) at 09:44 on 1 December 2011

I put it here because it's not really notable on its own. In fact I assumed it was all one model and just happened to see this guy and noticed the horse had a different refid - did a help "horse" and noticed one that had a baseid close to his, and ta-da it was the right one.
But really it's just a regular horse with the ghost properties though the trail it leaves might be a custom thing. Doesn't really deserve its own article but it's not an easy thing to figure out on your own so thought I'd share. -themendios 09:47, 1 December 2011 (UTC)
Well I'm unsure, to me the NPC is the horseman, and the horse is an after thgout. Wolfy 09:58, 1 December 2011 (UTC)
It is an afterthought, that's why it's a footnote on this page and doesn't have its own. It's unique enough to have the id/properties noted somewhere be a good thing but doesn't occur in normal gaming outside of glitches so doesn't deserve its own page. --tm 00:57, 3 December 2011 (UTC)
On the PC, it should be noted that the horse will return to the Rest, since it's not yours. — Unsigned comment by Ravage (talkcontribs) at 00:04 on 30 December 2011

Nord?[edit]

Are we sure he's a Nord? I could've sworn I heard him talk with the High Elf male voice. 111.68.59.71 16:24, 7 December 2011 (UTC)TheScathed

Yes, we're sure he's a Nord. NPC stats are taken from the game data, not guesses based on in-game appearance or voice actor. --NepheleTalk 06:07, 9 December 2011 (UTC)

Contrary[edit]

I meet this headless horseman already at hamir's rest at 11am in the morning after a long night walking around in the woods. No interaction was possible.Dragonalumni 15:24, 28 December 2011 (UTC)

Yep, same for me. Saw him at Hamvir's rest and returned several real time weeks later and he was still there. Just standing, not doing anything. Didn't even move when the skeletons and draugr came out and attacked. I clicked on him and he didn't do anyhting except maybe face his body towards me a little bit. Didn't talk either, which i thought was appropriate since he had no head and hence no mouth.
...Say, can i kill him and take his horse? ForsakenOne 07:44, 9 January 2012 (UTC)
Neither the horse nor the horseman can be hurt in any way, although that'd be nice 82.243.194.53 10:24, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

Horseless headless horseman![edit]

I've just been following this guy for a while being quite amused because he seems to have dismounted at some point and is now running after his horse who is galloping off before him. Anyone else encountered him like this?! — Unsigned comment by 82.132.138.153 (talk) at 00:29 on 22 January 2012

I've heard mention of this on the forums. Vardis 01:24, 22 January 2012 (UTC)
Yes. It was my only encounter with him so far. I was looking for the path to the Skyborn Altar to get the bounty and had just discovered Labyrinthine. Suddenly a ghost horse came flying past me, then a headless ghost came chasing after him a few seconds later. Gave me the willies. 66.32.245.118 13:59, 7 February 2012 (UTC)

How do you get his horse?[edit]

Is it just a Console Command or can you get it on PS3 or 360 as well? --66.81.28.33 21:51, 29 January 2012 (UTC)AtlasGraham

My guess is that the only way a console player could temporarily obtain the horse is through the glitch that is mentioned where he will be off his horse and chasing after it. If so it won't be "your" horse and will behave like a horse you obtain by finding one in the wild or one of the events when there's one next to some corpses. In other words us console players will only get it temporarily and then only through a glitch........ ---Gamer3427 02:01, 17 June 2012 (UTC)
You don't. I've made it my business to try to get his horse, and it's not easy, since you hardly ever run into him dismounted, but I can say with pretty good assurance that his horse can't be ridden or stolen. I've managed to try to mount his horse about four separate times now, and this last one was definitive. I ran into him on the Markarth road near the Shrine of Dibella, running along the road dismounted with his horse chasing him. The horse passed him up, and I sprinted, caught up to the horse, and clicked on it three separate times, got a clean shot at him; no result. He can't be ridden through normal gameplay. 174.63.193.225 02:02, 9 July 2017 (UTC)

This is not a bug![edit]

"Sometimes the horseman will be encountered at Hamvir's Rest during the daytime." I think this is not a bug by any means, he is supposed to be there. — Unsigned comment by 188.115.168.215 (talk) at 23:14 on 14 March 2012

Looking at the scripting, I'm not 100% sure, but I think he can in fact arrive at any time of day. The only thing I see is that he has to start the quest at night (between 10pm and 5:30am). I don't see anything that would cause him to disappear if he happens to take a long time to make it to Hamvir's Rest. Robin Hoodtalk 04:04, 9 April 2012 (UTC)
I've seen him wandering around Hamvir's Rest in the afternoon, too - an anon confirmed the issue on the page, and I can verify in-game, so I've removed the VN tag. Kitkat TalkContribE-mail 09:58, 25 May 2012 (UTC)

The horseman spoke, I am not joking at all.[edit]

While crossing the bridge heading towards the dawnguard DLC Hideout, he was being attacked (unsucessfully), by 3 wolves, He said " We meet again mortal " to me, and then ran off chasing after his horse, has he not spoken to anyone ever? — Unsigned comment by 24.63.171.231 (talk) at 02:34 on 29 August 2012

He does speak, but it is just generic things, he has no unique dialogue. SilencerSpeak 02:46, 29 August 2012 (UTC)

Prerequisites?[edit]

Are there any prerequisites or conditions that makes him appear? Coz i've spent countless hours in Skyrim, walking through each square inch I think, but I never seen the horseman. OR is it somehow bugged for me? — Unsigned comment by 85.66.211.226 (talk) at 17:42 on 28 April 2013‎

The only requirement that I can find on CSList is that it must be later than 10pm and before 5:30am for him to spawn, and that he will only appear on a road. I have encountered him in pretty much every hold in Skyrim. If you are REALLY patient, you could simply wait just outside Hamvir's Rest all night, as that is his destination, though he occasionally disappears before reaching it. --Xyzzy Talk 20:28, 28 April 2013 (GMT)

Leveled battleaxe[edit]

According to CSList, the Horseman's battleaxe is leveled, but I'm not sure if it's based on his level or your level. Does anybody know for sure? --Xyzzy Talk 13:29, 8 October 2013 (GMT)

I checked it myself, and his axe was made of steel even for my level 101 character. --Xyzzy Talk 13:35, 8 October 2013 (GMT)
What could've happened is: He could've spawned with a steel battleaxe because he has spawned before for you when your back was turned, but he went off before you could turn around to acknowledge him.
Does this help? Guard of DragonsSpeak To Me 08:22, 19 October 2013 (GMT)
It's a leveled battleaxe of elven quality or less, with a high likelihood of being iron or steel, even at high levels (it's a weighted randomization based on level that tends towards low-level items). I confirmed this in-game with my headless horseman having an iron battleaxe. Robin Hood  (talk) 22:46, 9 March 2016 (UTC)

Reference Cabin?[edit]

I've noticed a cabin just off of the road between Whiterun and the bandit-captured fort. I believe it may just be coincidince, and just the general design for abandoned dwellings, but it bears a strong resemblance to the destroyed home of the witch in "Sleepy Hollow". Could it be a reference? 75.71.109.217 05:04, 19 October 2013 (GMT)

I think you're right; just a coincidence. Destroyed shacks pretty much all look alike. --Xyzzy Talk 06:15, 19 October 2013 (GMT)

Philter of the Phantom[edit]

On one forum one individual suggested that drinking the philter of the phantom while interacting with him would give you a quest. Can anyone confirm (or refute) this? 75.142.246.225 15:58, 18 January 2014 (GMT)

Looking at the script for the effect that you gain from drinking it, I don't see anything that refers to the Headless Horseman. In-game testing could conceivably determine otherwise, but it sounds like your forum individual was speculating, or pulling your leg. --Xyzzy Talk 16:29, 18 January 2014 (GMT)
I tested this about 15 minutes ago, drank Philter of the Phantom and tried interacting with him, and no quest or anything unusual happened. VycDarkshadow (talk) 05:23, 28 January 2014 (GMT)

Headless Horseman's horse[edit]

On this other wiki http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Headless_Horseman ,It says that If the Headless Horseman is encountered when saving the game, then the save is reloaded, the Headless Horseman's steed will be black, Is that True?70.70.244.204 03:14, 2 September 2018 (UTC)

What has occurred there is a visual bug, in that the horse hasn't fully loaded with its ghost ability. I doubt very much that this can be replicated 100% of the time, or even anywhere close to the majority of times it is attempted. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 14:57, 2 September 2018 (UTC)

Does anyone know the id of the headless horsemans armor its a unique set that makes him headless.
