Sparing Cicero[edit]

I read somewhere that letting Cicero live is more beneficial than killing him. Could someone elaborate what these benefits are, exactly? I would find out myself, but the prospect of never hearing his shrill voice again is proving quite tempting. Thanks. Jayden Matthews 14:28, 14 November 2011 (UTC)

Could be because if you have him killed the family on the farm will be murdered. — Unsigned comment by Terkup (talkcontribs) at 12:20 on November 19, 2011
Huh, not sure. His stuff is pretty great, too, but I spared him. He can be a follower, but I'm not sure how useful he is, as I don't use followers. 67.237.109.144 01:27, 21 November 2011 (UTC)
got a 800page full skyrim book* from here it specifically says: instead of killing him, u can pickpocket him for the 500gold that u would get when killing him anyway but saving him will get u a follower and someone in your sanctuary at the end of the dark brotherhood questline ( he will be around the night mother and he is a pretty handy companion once u have given him some armor and a deadric dagger, also having him around his quote's when he talks randomly are pretty awesome, and as any other follower he can be used as storage on dungeons if your weight is getting full. 67.237.109.144 21:18, 14 December 2011 (UTC)
When you have the choice of letting cicero live or killing him, I accidentally attacked him. But instead of killing him, I ran away. Now at the Dawnstar Sanctuary, I can't find him. Is this a result of me attacking him? 208.83.214.226 04:00, 4 January 2012 (UTC)

() You should spare Cicero because he single-handedly saved the Dark Brotherhood from extinction. — Unsigned comment by 63.192.101.179 (talk) at 01:34 on 5 January 2012

He's an effective and colorful follower who will commit any crime you ask him to. Also, the rewards you get by killing him can almost all be retrieved, after sparing him, through pickpocketing (but you can't get the clothes which don't really help a stealth character much anyway). 74.198.9.59 03:54, 28 March 2012 (UTC)
His clothes are in the Dawnstar Sanctuary sitting on a table as you walk in through the main entrance way. — Unsigned comment by 96.54.226.221 (talk) at 18:35 on 16 January 2013 (GMT)
Actually you can pickpocket him for his clothes before you decide to kill or spare him by reverse pickpocketing a paralysis potion on him, he glitches and then his clothes can be taken, they respawn later as well. They are better than the outfit left out, but only slightly. Other than that, I've found he's extremely useful as a follower and very good at killing enemies. — Unsigned comment by 99.2.195.18 (talk) at 05:35 on 28 July 2013

Historical reference[edit]

His name should be a refernce of ancient roman statesman Marcus Tullius Cicero who invented the seperation of powers.(Vvardfell 12:15, 23 November 2011 (UTC))

Could also be a reference to the famous Turkish/German WW2 spy whose codename was Cicero, however there is no way to know for sure and there is not really a strong enough connection.RIM 22:00, 14 December 2011 (UTC)
The fact that he simply can't shut his mouth argues strongly for the Roman Cicero as the model. The Roman Cicero was one of the world's greatest orators and eventually got himself killed by shooting off his mouth one too many times. --174.6.51.17 09:27, 24 January 2012 (UTC)

How come he returns to the brotherhood if not killed? Makes litte sense that he'd be allowed back in after what he did, even if he'd pay a fine or something. I hadn't realized he was an Imperial. He's certainly annoying enough. My bad, then. Also, I assume the reason he was allowed back in was because he was on the Night Mother's side the whole time. You never know. It's possible he faced the Wrath of Sithis offscreen before he was allowed back in. — Unsigned comment by 111.68.59.73 (talk) at 16:38 on November 27, 2011
"How come he returns to the brotherhood if not killed? Makes litte sense that he'd be allowed back in after what he did" because cicero was in the right, the night mother is the dark brotherhood leader not the power-hungry wannabe astrid who betrayed everything the dark brotherhood stood for...doing away with the five tenents, disrespecting the night mother (which is why cicero attacked her) and going to the imperials to make a deal to have the dragonborn killed. 86.186.126.162 18:49, 28 November 2011 (UTC)

The Cicero on the road at Loreius Farm has a ref ID of 000550f1. --Tiger8u2 06:50, 6 March 2012 (UTC)
Is there some way we can make the multiple versions visible? Because I just noticed I forgot to talk to Cicero after Loreus (... there were some bugs in the vicinity and I kept talking to both of them and eventually my brain just stopped working...), I came to the uesp page to grab his refid so i could just teleport him over and say "Hey, your wagon wheel is fixed" but he didn't show; enabled and tried again in case he was disabled for some reason and he referenced me as Listener. Clearly not the right version of Cicero for what I was looking for =) I got 550F0 baseID and 550F1 RefID (same as Tiger back in March 2012...) for Wagon Cicero (we can call him that, too!). Edit: I'm daft; it's in the Notes. Not exactly obvious/easy to find though... 73.114.205.35 00:45, 28 February 2023 (UTC)

Cicero's Persona[edit]

Quote: "Like many of the Dark Brotherhood assassins, Cicero takes on a persona to get closer to his targets. He refers to himself as a "jester" and wears a full set of unique Jester's clothing accordingly..."

This is inaccurate, long before Cicero took on the persona of a Jester he was sworn off contracts (and thus couldn't use the Jester Persona to get close to any figuritive contracts) and has not done any since his last, which was killing the very Jester who gave him the persona (thus before he would have been acting as such) and is already contradicted in the article.

Quote: "...he was voted the Keeper... no longer able to take contracts... However, before being made Keeper, he was given one last contract to carry out. His job was to kill a jester and, being his last contract, Cicero became obsessed with his target... Cicero remembered how his last target seemed happy in death and inevitably took on both the apearance and demeanour of the jester."

Finally it's worth noting there's some minor redundancy that probably should be cleaned up.

As it goes. 81.136.132.198 12:56, 11 December 2011 (UTC)

Does it involve sneaking and stabbing?[edit]

Does Cicero actually sneak while commanded? It seems he is just like any other followers which just charge in front of the enemy and hack away. Is his only benefit really just hard to get detected? — Unsigned comment by 75.54.225.232 (talk) at 06:25 on January 17, 2012

All followers will sneak if you sneak, I am not sure of a way to command your followers to back-stab. Consult the forums on this issue. Rhoan 21:25, 29 January 2012 (UTC)
If you give him a very strong dagger like blade of woe and you are in sneak you will have the option to make him assassinate someone. — Unsigned comment by 173.61.151.231 (talk) at 16:39 on 12 April 2012

Bug?[edit]

Lately, whenever I've been in attack mode, Cicero will constantly block. He doesn't rush up and attack anymore but instead holds his dagger in the block stance and moves slowly whenever his weapons are drawn. Has anyone had these problems or have any idea on how to fix it? 68.54.79.53 15:42, 31 January 2012 (UTC)

Cicero is "essential"?[edit]

After Cicero is recruited as a follower, is he still essential? Only reason I ask is that the article makes reference to the fact that there exist three different ID's for the same character. Maybe someone could put up some character tables for the other two ID's instead of having that info inside the body? Thanks. 76.24.25.188 00:31, 16 February 2012 (UTC)

I can say that in my account, Cicero is essential and cannot be killed (I have tried with an "OP"ed weapon dealing over 12 million damage). Though this needs to be confirmed because several pages on a number of wikis say that, as a follower, he can be killed 74.198.9.59 03:46, 28 March 2012 (UTC)

A friend of mine just killed him while he was a follower. Probably his status switches to protected after the dark brotherhood questline ends. Ytsejam91 (talk) 13:51, 2 May 2014 (GMT)

Everything I've read seems to say that Cicero is always essential, except during your window of opportunity in the Dawnstar Sanctuary where you have the choice to either kill him or spare him. This question of Cicero being non-essential as a Follower really needs a definitive answer. My suggestion would be to try to sacrifice him at the Sacellum of Boethiah during the quest Boethiah's Calling. It's already well established that essential Followers will not trigger the shrine's pillar. Evil-i (talk) 03:14, 1 February 2015 (GMT)
Now I find this. Yes, he cannot be killed with the Pillar of Sacrifice. Unfortunately. 216.161.55.218 06:56, 4 September 2015 (UTC)

Cicero as a Dead Thrall[edit]

It turns out that reanimated Cicero keeps his personality and unique speaking. So, in particular, no moaning at all. Also you can grab his unique clothes and after entering a new area he is re-equipped with a new set. He is a dual-wielder, and to my knowledge the only one (among named ones). Thus if you play a necromancer your choice is better to kill Cicero during the appropriate quest, talk to Astrid, and after you can Dead Thrall him.--31.128.147.6 01:19, 18 February 2012 (UTC)

Needs a sweet roll[edit]

So I was just wondering if Cicero ends meaning about being hungry if I'll give him what he wants: some sweet rolls and carrots. So he had a hundred of both from me, and I've continued the main quest. Never he was in a battle, as I prefer the backstab and sniper tactics, and he just messes, so he stayed out of the trouble, in towns all the time, just being a pack-mule. And after finishing the main questline and entering his inventory I wondered about all that food and, you know what? He ate it! Leaving about 25 or 30 carrots and 9 sweet rolls. I'm sure he never was harmed, as never was IN the battle and had a lit of healing potions with himself. That's a funny thing that needs conformation, and may be, adding into the page. — Unsigned comment by 46.203.32.201 (talk) at 17:16 on 2 March 2012

Cicero as a second follower?[edit]

Just completed the quest which the Dawnstar Sanctuary is fully upgraded. Strange thing happened. Completed the quest with patch 1.5. Bug? — Unsigned comment by 210.187.254.58 (talk) at 21:08 on 8 April 2012

It's a bug but is it confined to Cicero or can you have any two followers. The Silencer has spoken 21:43, 8 April 2012 (UTC)
It works for Cicero and any of the generic Dark Brotherhood followers. Unfortunately, if you get more than two followers, who are not the above and not temporary followers, one follower will return to his home. Bethesda apparently put something in non-DB follower scripting to keep you from having too many followers. Cicero Dual-Weidling?[edit]

I have been looking all over the internet to try and find out if Cicero will dual wield daggers when I take him as a follower. He's like my favorite Skyrim character, he's so delightfully mad. Half the internet seems to think Cicero can dual-weild daggers, and half the internet seems to think that he cannot. I can't get a straight answer. Can anyone tell me from experience if he can or can't? Mole126 03:08, 1 May 2012 (UTC)

I removed his ebony dagger and gave him two steel daggers. If you then check his inventory, the daggers are listed together "Steel Dagger(2)" with the equipped icon next to it; but when he fights, his right hand holds a dagger and his left is empty. The way the two daggers are shown together in his inventory may be the source of the confusion. --Xyzzy 03:07, 26 May 2012 (UTC)

Cicero can fly![edit]

I just watched Cicero fly several feet to catch up to me. He was floating about 1 foot off the ground, legs dangling motionless, arms flapping like he was flying, as he caught up with me as I passed through Helgen. I have never seen any other NPC behave in this fashion. Is this a known behavior? --Xyzzy 04:40, 25 May 2012 (UTC)

I've seen NPCs look like they were swimming (breaststroke with arms, legs doing nothing, idling with arms flapping slowly like wings), which I think is what you're talking about. However, I've only seen it with NPCs added with a mod (one that added Travelers to the roads), so I figured it might be added by the mod. Do you have a mod that affects Cicero? If not, it might be something that affects multiple NPCs. Vely►Talk►Email 14:46, 25 May 2012 (UTC)
It was a definite flying motion, arms flapping up and down, not front to back like a swimming motion. Also, I don't have any mods installed that are Cicero-specific. The only one that I have installed that might affect his behavior is the Follower Trap Safety mod. --Xyzzy 15:29, 25 May 2012 (UTC)
I've seen this glitch as well. I've seen a few random NPCs do it, and my own character has done it once or twice after jumping and landing in an odd place (for example, I'd jumped in a forge, and when I jumped out my character started flying and flapping her arms for about 7 seconds or so). I'm not sure what triggers it for NPCs, since I've never seen them jump, but as for the player character, they're probably landing in a place they can't technically land and thus the glitch. It's just my speculation though.--67.215.211.80 04:31, 24 June 2015 (UTC)

This is just a fairly common glitch in any game with a physics engine of any sort. I remember this glitch being really bad in Oblivion, all you had to do to cause it is jump out of the water, and not come to complete stop while landing. It's not notable on any page besides a general engine glitch page, if even there. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 06:04, 24 June 2015 (UTC)

Growing/Shrinking[edit]

I just started Whispers In The Dark, and before hiding in the Night Mother's coffin, I decided to go talk to Cicero to see if he had any unique dialogue (he didn't) So after I exited the conversation, I decided that it would be a good idea to attempt pickpocketing him (he actually had 500 gold, which was pretty cool) So I wait for him to lie down in his bed, and I noticed that, right before he went into the animation to lie down, he grew in size slightly! When I talked to him again, he shrunk after getting out of bed. I don't know if this is something that happens with all characters or just Cicero, and I don't know if it's worth mentioning, but I found it to be rather amusing.--Kolensk 05:02, 27 May 2012 (UTC)Kolensk

Ciceros height[edit]

Is it possible that Cicero's shorter then other Imperials are? As Argonian male I came close to him and he reached lizards shoulder, though other Imperals seemed to be taller, then, out of curiosity, I've made a Breton female character and it seems like Cicero was a little shorter then a Breton female (though Imperials height is announced to be 1.0, and Breton!F is 0.95). Or that might be some kind of optical effect because of his hair (every time when I measured the height, to be more accurate, I undressed both characters, Cicero via console). — Unsigned comment by 46.202.43.92 (talk) at 22:09 on 2 September 2012

His height is the same as other Imperials, at 1.0000. Vely►t►e 22:16, 2 September 2012 (UTC)
How do you check the height of an NPC? I want to verify this as well, because he also looks smaller to me. I am playing an Imperial, and standing next to him, he looks a lot shorter. 174.6.46.140 04:06, 24 December 2012 (GMT)
Actually, his entire body is 0.9 times the size of a normal Imperial. The race is the first thing to check, and as Vely says, he's a normal Imperial there, meaning he's 1.0000 times the size of the "standard" humanoid. However, in his "reference" data (which controls the specific instance of a creature, even if there's only ever one of them in the first place), his scale is set to 0.9000...in other words, he's 10% smaller in all respects, not just height. Robin Hood TALK 05:12, 24 December 2012 (GMT)

He does seem small. Before i played the dark brotherhood questline i thought Cicero was a Bosmer because of how short he was. Mudcrab 52 (talk) 05:48, 9 January 2024 (UTC)

Broken Oar Grotto[edit]

If you enter Broken Oar Grotto with Cicero as follower he gets stuck in there, meaning he will not follow you out. Sending him home doesn't help either, he will just stay in there forever. I tried to teleport him to me with the console, it rendered him unable to talk to. It's advisable to send him away or leave him waiting before entering Broken Oar Grotto. — Unsigned comment by 78.53.5.156 (talk) at 18:54 on 25 June 2013‎

This is a general problem with Broken Oar Grotto and followers that is described here. The suggestion this page provides to fix this issue is, "If any followers remain stuck inside. It may be possible to release them by traveling to Solitude and paying off a bounty (if you have no bounty, create one). Upon release, all followers should be in your party." It's not specific to Cicero at all, meaning it could happen with any follower. Forfeit (talk) 19:53, 25 June 2013 (GMT)

Humming/whistling[edit]

The recent bug addition "When Cicero is humming, the subtitles say he is whistling instead" doesn't really seem like a bug. Being that it says whistling in the subtitles wouldn't that be developer oversight and not a bug. Lorenut (talk) 05:03, 10 November 2014 (GMT)

To me, it seemed like a bug since it isn't supposed to say that. If you think otherwise, feel free to move it to notes :) ~ Ad intellige (talk) 05:07, 10 November 2014 (GMT)
I moved it to the notes section per your suggestion. The reason i'm saying it isn't a bug is because it seems more like a mistake by the devs when it was added rather than a typical bug. Lorenut (talk) 05:21, 10 November 2014 (GMT)
As Lorenut (and even the anon who posted it) said, this isn't really a bug, since it's an issue with the choice of words used rather than an actual problem with the game. In my opinion, this kind of information seems a bit more nitpicky than noteworthy, but if it belongs anywhere, it belongs in the notes section. Multiple IDs[edit]

The statement in the notes "There are, in fact, three versions of Cicero. The statistics provided in the page summary are for the version of Cicero who appears in the Dawnstar Sanctuary; this is the version who you have the choice to kill or leave in The Cure for Madness quest, and the version who can become your follower." is inaccurate. At least in my game, Cicero who appears in the Dawnstar Sanctuary, the version who you have the choice to kill or leave in The Cure for Madness quest, has ref ID 0001E64A and is 0,9 height. I dead thralled him, so I know for sure. The version 0009BCB0, which is stated as "main" is just disabled - I've tried to enable him and from his dialogue I can figure that this is the version prepared in case you spare him to be your follower. His dialogue confirms this. I will edit notes if nobody replies in a few days.178.236.241.33 18:54, 19 March 2016 (UTC)

Cicero won't wait when told to and refuses to be dismised[edit]

I've been having Cicero as a follower for quite a long time, and I noticed that I ofen tell him to wait somewhere, but he still follows me. Didn't think it was a bug, until I tried to dismiss him a while ago. I must note I was inside one of my heartfire mansions when I first tried to dismiss him, he gave me the right dialog back about going back with the Mother, but he would just stand there, and when I moved, he followed me.

I thought this might be due to trying to dismiss him inside the house, so I told him to follow me, and exited the house to try again, with same results.

I've been searching for an answer in google, and I've seen many people report the same issue, but no solutions where given, so I decided to come to this wiki as I always do, since it always seems to have every single bug and solution listed. What was my surprise when this bug was not even listed under Cicero. I haven't tried it myself, but I've read that other people was even capable of recruiting a new follower while having Cicero follow them everywhere, but whithout him couning as follower and behaving as such.

It would be interesting if other people could confirm this bug, so it can be properly listed, and it would be even better if someone could provide a solution. — Unsigned comment by 90.74.87.253 (talk) at 20:06 on 12 February 2017

I actually had a similar issue with Lydia at Heljarchen Hall. It was just after I got her as a housecarl and took her as pack mule to Heljarchen. I dismissed her outside after taking my stuff but she just stood there. She wasn't a follower anymore but she just stood there for weeks not moving. Eventually I got bored of my new statue and recruited her again and went to Breezehome. Dismissing her there caused no problems, so it may actually be an issue with the locations. This leads to two questions; have you tried dismissing him away from the house, and does he have dialogue to re-recruit him? If he doesn't have the dialogue, try going back to the house to see if you can recruit him there, and if that works then travel away from the house and try to dismiss him. I haven't had any problems with dismissing anyone away from their homes, just at the house. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 20:35, 12 February 2017 (UTC)

Reference to the Joker[edit]

I'm surprised no one has brought this up before, but I think he was pretty obviously inspired by the Joker. I mean he's an evil, insane, reckless, wisecracking, constantly laughing jester (and they're basically medieval clowns). Going to add a note about this. — Unsigned comment by 98.28.235.254 (talk) at 00:59 on 14 April 2018 (UTC)

You are pointing out yourself, that they are both inspired by the same medieval origin, not one by the other. If they have the same inspiration, they are bound to be similar, but that does not make one the inspiration for the other. —MortenOSlash (talk) 17:19, 15 April 2018 (UTC)
I didn't say they both had the same inspiration. The Joker seems based off of a modern day clown, not a jester, and what I'm saying is that whoever designed Cicero's character probably based him off the Joker, because they're both mass murdering, insane, evil clowns. When you look at the similarities between he two I think it's pretty obvious whoever designed Cicero used the Joker as inspiration for him. — Unsigned comment by 166.137.12.114 (talk) at 16:02 on 17 April 2018 (UTC)
While I can agree they are both insane and mass murderers, the only other thing I find they have in common is being inspired by the same type of medieval jester. Cicero is not planning on taking over the world like the Joker. Cicero's only goal is serving the Night Mother.

I created an account to make this easier. IP address changes because I usually respond on my phone from varying areas while I'm out doing stuff.
Anyway, you said you don't see many similarities between the two, so let me lay them our for you:
-Both normal people who went completely insane and now act like clowns (atypical for both insane people and jesters as far as I can tell, I could count off my hand the number of insane people who act like clowns)
-Both make jokes only funny to them in inappropriate and extreme situations (Cicero even jokes about the Dragonborn "listening" if he remains silent when about to kill him, and cries out "A funny joke!").
-Both highly convicted in their beliefs to the point of attempting murder on those who don't agree (the Joker being highly convicted in his belief that life is a sick joke and Cicero highly convicted in his belief the Night Mother is the true leader of the Dark Brotherhood).
It's not hard to spot the similarities.-ChrisOfChaos (talk) 9:47, 14 May 2018 (EST)
