I'll Open my store Whenever I Damn Well Please[edit]

Am I the only one that has a problem with the store actually being open? I've come by at all hours of the day and night, and even when other shops are open, Belethor's is almost always locked, with the store keeper nowhere to be found. Occasionally it'll open up for a few hours, but other than that, it's essentially an abandoned house. What gives? 132.178.2.63 11:58, 9 December 2011 (UTC)

I have the same problem. His shop used to be open at normal times but recently for a couple of months in game time it has been locked with only the other guy inside. It's as though Belethor has vanished from the game. 58.170.99.171 09:55, 21 December 2011 (UTC)
He could have died from a dragon attack or a fight of some kind. I had the problem where the store was locked and I just picked the lock, went in and went back out and now the store opens as normal.RIM 10:21, 21 December 2011 (UTC)
Problem solved just realised I have a rescue mission open and guess who I have to save freaken Belethor from Silent Moon Camp. Lol too funny. 58.170.99.171 15:37, 22 December 2011 (UTC)
if you go into the hall of the dead in the city he has a coffin in there, no idea how he died though :s
Thank you for this tip. I too had Belethor die for no reason. His coffin was in the hall of the dead with his key to the shop. Now his assistant is gone! — Unsigned comment by 50.38.57.99 (talk)

() I am having a Problem with Belethor not having any Merchandise and not being able to sell anything to him. Has anyone had this Problem Before? If so how can I fix this? RavenWhitehawk

Try talking to him at different hours of the day. As a last resort you could kill him and let his assistant take over the shop. Also, to sign your name just put 4 ~'s at the end. RIM 11:42, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

In Case of the Death of Belethor[edit]

I assumed that if Belethor died, for whatever reasons or by whatever means, that Sigurd would take over the shop in the same manner that Ysolda takes over the Bannered Mare if Hulda dies. However, Belethor has died by "mysterious means" in games of mine both on PC anbd Xbox, yet the store remains closed. Anyone have any ideas or experience on this? he appears to be dead in my game on PS3 as well. ive played many hours with about 6 different characters and this is the first time it's happened. I was griping about his shop being closed all the time so I finally broke in & he was not there. I checked here on UESP and found that he could have a coffin in the catacombs, so I checked and it's definitely there with all his possessions & key. Sigurd does nothing but chop wood & tell me to visit Belethor's shop. what an irritating little man.
i've been trying to figure out how it happened. no dragons have entered Whiterun. I did kill one just outside the main gate, but I don't think he would have been out there & the dragon didn't survive very long with all the guards around anyway. I did the Battle for Whiterun on the imperial side; is it possible for anyone to get killed then besides Pelagia? i think it's unlikely.
maybe he got killed during the panic in Whiterun when i first turned into a werewolf and ran through the streets? i'm not sure if it would have been accidental arrows or something, or if there's a reason why someone would attack him. friends of mine maybe, except I was in beast form so I don't think my friends would fight for me.. what about Companion werewolf sympathizers?
it's also possible that he just spontaneously glitched & died.. i've seen it happen with dogs and mammoths personally, they just fly into the air and then fall down and die when you enter the area.
It's a big mystery really.. i'm pretty bummed that I don't have a sarcastic james woods to sell stuff to in Whiterun anymore 172.162.219.122 03:33, 29 April 2012 (UTC)
If Belethor has died mysteriously, you can always resurrect him with the console (on PC only!). First, verify his death by checking the catacombs for his coffin. If it is there, walk back outside and type the following into the console (each quotation on its own line, hitting enter between each and without the quote marks):
"prid 0001A672"
"moveto player"
"enable"
"resurrect"
This should resurrect Belethor and cause him to appear right next to you. He will then return to running his shop. NOTE: ALWAYS BACK UP YOUR SAVE FILES BEFORE USING THE CONSOLE! 157.201.64.190 00:37, 9 September 2012 (EDT)
I did this and found belethor would not sell any items it just put him back but with no option to sell 99.230.46.142 15:28, 18 November 2012 (GMT)
I did this and as mentioned above Belethor would not sell...but he did unlock the shop where I found Ysolda inside running it. She had all the options for selling. So I killed Belethor again and the shop remained unlocked through all day night cycles and Ysolda faithfully showed up to do business each day around 8:00am.
After doing "prid 0001A672" "moveto player" "enable" "resurrect" as describe above, also do "addtofaction 51596 1" "addtofaction 51599 1" Abacus707 (talk) 05:26, 28 December 2012 (GMT)
After doing above, Belethor may appear lying on the ground. Then, shortly, start to slide along the ground, still on his back, all the way (including down the steps!) to the back entrance of his shop. When I went around the front, it was now unlocked and, going in, he was now standing at the counter and open for business again. Great fix, and hysterical into the bargain! () What are factions 51596 and 51599? Strangely, UESP has no way to look up factions by number and I can't find them after 2 hours of laboriously going through the factions list which is tragically flawed and rendered pretty much useless for lookups by its separate-page-for-each-letter-of-the-alphabet format which requires that you know the name of the faction in order to look it up. Also, I am not able to find any console command or other mechanism for "exposing" the factions that an NPC belongs to, and those two FormIDs (51596 & 51599) are not listed as factions Belethor belongs to on his UESP page. The reason it is useful to know what those factions are is to find out if they are factions to which ALL resurrected merchants should be assigned in order to resume their mercantile dialogs, or specific to Belethor despite their complete absence from his factions list on UESP. This question is made all the more interesting to me because I just prid/moveto player/enable/resurrect Adrianne Avenicci after she had been dead for weeks, and she immediately resumed her merchant dialog and even "knew" that I had invested in her business at some point before she died- without me having to add her to any factions. Using Ctrl+F, I was able to find that 51596 appears to be the JobMerchantFaction-- at least, that faction is listed as 00051596. The same goes for 51599, except that it's JobMiscFaction. Belethor is not listed as a normal member of either faction, although he's under potential members? — Unsigned comment by 68.10.130.72 (talk) at 03:44 on 21 May 2014

NPCs exiting[edit]

I have noticed that when I enter and the guard outside follows me in, due to the fact that he was talking to me, that he will not exit the way he came in. Instead, he will walk through the store and exit through the back door. This happens with any NPC who accidentally follows me into this shop. Has this happened to anyone else? Halfstache 00:16, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

NPCs following you inside in the middle of dialogue is pretty common, and I've noticed any followers I have always use the "back door" of his shop as well (regardless of which door I use). ABCface 00:10, 9 May 2012 (UTC)

"Do Not Delete" for sale?[edit]

I have found a chest called "Do Not Delete" for sale here multiple times. Does anybody know what the heck this is?
