Essential[edit]

In my game Beirand is essential, and digging into the CK he's obviously essential because of the Get Outfitted quest -- his alias in that quest has the essential flag checked. However, in the game I was using, I had joined the Stormcloaks and therefore was unable to complete that quest.

So I was wondering whether anyone else could easily check:

  1. Is Beirand still essential after Get Outfitted is complete?
  2. If not and you kill him, does Heimvar taking over running the store?

I'm pretty sure Heimvar does not take over the store -- he is never added to the ServicesSolitudeBlacksmith faction that would be necessary for him to sell the blacksmith's merchandise. However, he does have the BlacksmithBackup alias in the DialogueSolitude quest. So I don't know whether to consider that alias as bugged (because it doesn't properly turn him into the owner of the store) or just irrelevant (because Beirand can't ever die).

Beirand loses his essential status after the Get Outfitted quest, which makes him killable. After waiting for three days, Heimvar still hasn't taken over the shop, so I think you are right in assuming that Heimvar is bugged. But maybe I didn't wait long enough. In current SE version + unofficial patch - Heimvar works ok and took place as smith after Beirand's death 45.12.220.187 11:36, 5 September 2019 (UTC)

Beirand's Emerald and Jade Circlet.[edit]

I randomly went to Solitude in search of something with a conjuration enchantment on it, I found Beirand selling a Jade and Emerald Circlet with his name on it, I tried searching on this site and other sites, but to no avail. Any idea what it is used for? I play on the XBox, by the way. — Unsigned comment by 37.239.167.90 (talk) on 27 March, 2013

Have you been on any Thieves Guild's quests? That's the only way I can imagine him having a circlet named after him. I hear the fishing job is bugged, or rather, Delvin taking in the stolen item, because he'll likely end up taking a normal item (should you have it with you) rather than the specific named item. I think it may have something to do with that ~ Dwarfmp (talk) 13:03, 27 March 2013 (GMT)
I think the items remain forever even if you decide to cancel the job. That's particulary notable with the Burglary and Sweep jobs, you get houses full of golden vases if you decide to start an other quest. Elakyn (talk) 13:07, 27 March 2013 (GMT)

Beirand's movements[edit]

This relates not just to Beirand, but to general NPC packaging considerations in Skyrim. Saved the game at the outside forge at 7:58 a.m. game time. Beirand isn't there. Move around, face the tanning rack, turn 180, turn another 180 at 8:00, he's suddenly there, without ever walking up the approaching stairway. Reloaded a few times, the observation is he can pop-up, but never in front of you. He was 8 minutes late in one game-reload, -for whatever reason,- but in that case he was actually walking up the stairway.--Lmstearn (talk) 03:39, 4 January 2014 (GMT)

Special Edition Bug[edit]

Beirand keeps dying. A lot of research shows that is has to do with leaving the Blue Palace or fast traveling to it. I can revive him through the console time and again, but he keeps dying. I'll try setting him essential. — Unsigned comment by 217.249.211.199 (talk) at 12:30 on 21 May 2018

I can confirm this bug, though it's odd that the Special Edition would be to blame, since most of the code is the same. Whatever the case, Beirand and Heimvar both die on me pretty much every game I play. It makes sense that the Blue Palace would be involved, as I hadn't bothered to go "find" it until just recently and everything was fine before then. Suddenly, just after I found it, Beirand is dead. I've never fast-travelled to it, though, so we can reasonably rule that out.
I'm hesitant to put this on the page for the time being, though, just because I use a lot of mods, which could be interfering in some way. If anyone can confirm that this is happening to them in a vanilla game, that would be fantastic! If not, I'll do some research in a new, vanilla game at some point, and see what I can figure out. This is reportedly due to a mod called "Where's Your Smelter?", which I do have installed. I've found a few bugs with it, and it's what's commonly referred to as a "dirty" mod. While I intend to keep using it for the moment, I wouldn't recommend it unless you're comfortable with the bugs it introduces (Solitude smiths dying, Skyforge pathing broken, a few other less problematic issues) and/or can use the console or other mods to work around the issue. (A mod called "Protect Your People" comes recommended in the comments for the mod.) Robin Hood  (talk) 16:46, 1 May 2019 (UTC)
I do not use any shady mods. Only standard unofficial SE patch + well known immersive citizens. Still Beirand died one day, for the reasons being unknown. I blame it on "immersive citizens" mod. 45.12.220.187 11:33, 5 September 2019 (UTC)
I have just had this exact bug happen to me. I left the Blue Palace, bumped into Kayd who said his dad had died, then went over to the forge to find Heimvar there. Using tfc I saw Beirand had fallen under the map and died. But Beirand was alive before I first entered the Blue Palace just earlier, as I was just selling stuff to him. Very strange. I don't have that 'where's your smelter' mod mentioned above either. --Xbox99 (talk) 12:58, 14 July 2021 (UTC)
I have had Beirand die during fully unmodded games. I'll add a note to his page about it. --Pavonisstart (talk) 21:32, 27 October 2023 (UTC)
