Speaking with the Duke/Duchess is not a requirement. You can eliminate the Duke/Duchess as well as the priests of order from a distance. As with any other NPC, as long as you remain fully undetected and the Duke/Duchess dies from a single strike; there is no reason to walk into an obvious trap as you will not get a bounty and the killing will not be regarded as a murder or an assault.--Webdemon00 12:31, 31 August 2008 (EDT)

Item <Missing Name>[edit]

I don't know if this is common but the last few times i've went through this mission i've run into at least 1 Ordered Gnarl holding an item <Missing Name>. I know not to pick it up but i am just wondering if anyone else has come across this? Lord Eydvar 08:54, 22 December 2008 (EST)

Why not pick it up? I found the same thing, but collecting the "item" did me no immediate harm.--Gardimuer 06:47, 28 July 2009 (UTC)
It usually crashes the game. --Elliot talk 06:58, 28 July 2009 (UTC)
I have also noticed this. Picking it up does no harm. Would be nice to know the cause. Attempting to dropping or drop-holding the item fails, as the item wont exist outside of the inventory. I attempted to get the formID or baseID of the item, but the inability to hold it combined with the lack of an inventory list console command makes it impossible to find it. For anyone who wants to hunt it down in the creation kit, look south of the door E(Z3) in zone 1 of The Fountainhead. I found the creature flat on the T-juncture directly south of the door, the first new path that pathway comes to. It was one of the hostile but non-glowing tree things. 68.2.107.108 23:47, 8 July 2010 (UTC)

i picked this item up recently i dunno if its linked or sheer coincedence but when i dropped it a gnarl rootbender was stood infront of me it shaded in as if it had just spawend......reminds me of missingno from the origanal pokemon games tho The sorrow 15:04, 16 September 2011 (UTC)

The Fountain head- aftermath[edit]

Does Anyone know if it is possible to enter the fountainhead after the quest and If the monsters re-spawn? Haskill mentions that the Fountainhead was Sheogorath's inner sanctum and a place where he went to meditate, so it would seem indicative that when the player becomes Sheogorath this becomes available. Is this the case? — Unsigned comment by Auguil (talkcontribs) on 15 July 2009

You can still enter, but although the "good" Gnarls respawn, as do the plants, nothing else does. –rpehTCE 17:51, 16 July 2009 (UTC)

from the notes section[edit]

  • If you use the resurrect <1> command in the console or use a mod with a resurrect spell it is possible to revive the Duke/Duchess that you kill in this quest after you have purged the second pool in the fountain in the palace. The revived NPC will be hostile to your character at first but if u escape their view with invisibility and return to palace to complete the main quest you will find the Duke/Duchess returned to their original normal script from the begging of the SI quest. In this way you can mercifully revive the betrayer and still have them serve over a duchy for you. This will only work with the second Duke/Duchess you kill since the first one is removed from the game via script. The revived Duke/Duchess can even be recruited via many companion mods. Try it out its fun!

I removed this. It is poorly written. If the information is true though, someone could still use it in the article.

The Staff[edit]

When you become Sheogorath is it possible to have the cane instead of the staff? — Unsigned comment by TheElderScribe (talkcontribs) on 9th January 2010

Nope, only the staff is obtainable. --SerCenKing Talk 14:01, 9 January 2010 (UTC)
Damn, really wanted that cane!— Unsigned comment by TheElderScribe (talkcontribs) on 9 January 2010

Haskill[edit]

You can just use summon Haskill to find out that the font is corrupted, you don't have to actually try to activate the font. 83.183.219.250 18:53, 24 July 2010 (UTC)

I triggered this accidentally by summoning Haskill after I obtained the Incomplete Staff, but before I went back to New Sheoth. One thing I noticed is that even though he gave me the next quest, the previous quest, Symbols of Office, did not get marked completed until after I tried to place the staff in the pool. So it's probably not a good idea to skip this step. EmmBee 15:14, 1 August 2011 (UTC)

Tamed gnarls becoming untamed[edit]

I have recently seen tamed gnarl that approached Pool of Dementia (which I haven't cleansed yet), stood there for a second or two and became "ordered", hostile. The Priest of Order said something like "Oh, that's just a gnarl. Let it drink order as well!". I didn't find this information in the article, and it seems to be quite important. 109.205.248.37 13:47, 23 October 2010 (UTC)
