Vows and Oaths[edit]

Blessing the Handfast[edit]

When you approach before accepting the related quest you can overhear Chief-of-Chiefs Cannear berating the gathered Eagleseers and Six-Fords. If you speak to Chief Eagleseer before speaking to the Chief-of-Chiefs he'll say:

"You dare interrupt one of our sacred ceremonies, outsider? If the chief-of-chiefs hadn't summoned you, we'd be doing more than talking right now."

Once you've agreed to help Chief-of-Chiefs Cannear with resolving the handfasting matter, he'll be more talkative:

"If I hadn't heard the chief-of-chiefs' words with my own ears, I'd think this another trick of the hated Six-Fords.
Still, you have your task, outsider. Get on with it already."
You don't seem happy about this impending marriage.
"What's to be happy about? I'll abide by the chief-of-chiefs' counsel, but I can't imagine a blood bond between us and the Six-Ford clan.
I just hope the lad's worthy of Eslyn. If not, he won't last much past the ceremony, if I know my daughter!"
Tell me about your daughter.
"Eslyn's my one and only. She's got four older brothers, but she's the fiercest child I've ever whelped. Eagleseer blood runs strong through her veins, thank Bal.
Madearn needs to mind her edges. Not that the Six-Fords give much mind to anything."
Why don't you and Chief Six-Ford get along?
"Eh, that has nothing to do with you, outsider. Do as the chief-of-chiefs bids so we can get on with this."

If you speak to him again, he'll say:

"My daughter and the misbegotten son of the Six-Fords are in the handfasting cave. Go and do as the chief-of-chiefs instructed and let's get this over with."

The Lover's Coil[edit]

Return to the gathering at the ring and Vateshran Barth will be retelling the tale of the Lover's Coil. Speak to Chief Eagleseer before speaking to the Chief-of-Chiefs and he'll remark:

"The chief-of-chiefs keeps us here like prisoners! And how dare the vateshran share the tales our elders told him in confidence. If this keeps up, I won't be held responsible for my actions."

Speaking to the Chief-of-Chiefs, you have to decide to convince Eslyn and Madearn to go along with the handfasting or help the couple find another way.

Go through with the handfasting[edit]

"I saw the chief-of-chiefs' temper rise, but she's calm, now.
I don't know how you figure into these happenings, outsider, but I don't like it. This is clan business. You shouldn't be involved."

After the handfasting is complete:

"Well, that went smoother than I expected. It certainly took long enough, but I suppose the end result is worth it.
Still, the sooner we leave this place, the better. I do not enjoy time away from my clan holdings."

Madearn changes his mind[edit]

If you told Madearn that you can't force him to make a decision, he'll have a surprising response at the ceremony:

Chief-of-Chiefs Cannear: "Ah, here they come. Let us complete the rite."
Chief Eagleseer: "Finally. Let's get on with it already."
Chief-of-Chiefs Cannear: "Eslyn of the Eagleseer, Madearn of the Six-Ford, will you take up the vow of marriage?"
Madearn: "No. I can't do this. I am promised to Drisene, of Clan Six-Ford!"
Drisene: "Madearn!"
Chief Eagleseer: "This insult won't stand, Six-Fords! You'll see your treachery matched with our flint."
Chief Six-Ford: "This was not my doing, Eagleseer, but if it's a fight you want, a fight you'll get."
Chief-of-Chiefs Cannear: "This can't be happening."

After Madearn's revelation:

"It's all a mess now, thanks to that Six-Ford's lad.
I suppose I need to go and prepare for the next battle with that hated clan."

Find another way[edit]

"The chief-of-chiefs looks angry. Whatever you did, outsider, tread carefully. If called to, I will bring the might of the Eagleseer clan down on your head."

Once you've spoken to Eslyn and Madearn, return to the circle:

Chief-of-Chiefs Cannear: "Here it comes."
Chief Eagleseer: "What of the handfasting?"
Eslyn: "There will be no handfasting, father. We don't need it. This feud is foolish."
Madearn: "She's right, father. We don't need a handfasting to make us lower our swords. Heed the vateshran's tale."
Chief Six-Ford: "The Eagleseer waif has poisoned your mind, boy. You shame me!"
Chief Eagleseer: "You lay this at my daughter's feet, Six-Ford? My warriors and I will make you regret those words."
<The two chiefs and Evroch walk away>
Chief-of-Chiefs Cannear: "Our chance for peace is gone."
Eslyn: "Gone for today, perhaps. But not forever. Madearn and I will make sure of it."
Madearn: "Aye. We will spread the vateshran's tale to our clans until enough heed it."

After the quest, you'll find him outside the ruins:

"I knew Eslyn might prickle at the idea of the handfasting, but to go through all of this only to accomplish nothing? Foolish. And I've lost face in front of both the chief-of-chiefs and Vateshran Barth."

Notes[edit]

  • When asked about his daughter, he says, "but she's the fiercest child I've ever whelped". You can hear a phone ringing in the background of the audio clip.
