Unofficial Reward[edit]

I'm pretty sure this doesn't count as an official reward but was intended as an unofficial one - with each of these quests (spies, then the 4 artifacts) Martin surrounds himself with more and more books, some of them skillbooks. Another Way[edit]

I found another way to get through this section. I first went to talk to the captain in the castle. I went to the house and broke in (I am the Gray Fox, so that was my default thinking). I found the two named characters inside, they attacked me, I killed them, and stole the keys off of them. I went in the basement, grabbed the scroll, and returned to the temple. I did it similarly - I ignored the captain entirely, and bribed a beggar into pointing me to Jearl. I then made my way to the secret basement door outside of town and invited myself in. Jearl and Saveri Faram were less than pleased to see me, but their corpses were much more cooperative during the strip search. -- Cronocke 03:50, 28 April 2007 (EDT)

I did it like that as well. I think that this faster option should be added to the article because from the article it sounds that it is necessary to kill one of the spies near the Rune Stone, while in fact you can talk to Burd who will tell you about Jearl and you don't have to wait near the Rune Stone - — Unsigned comment by Zantira (talkcontribs) at 10:39 on 3 October 2015 (UTC)
You can bypass Burd and the rune stone. Upon receiving the quest, go straight to Jearl's house. Wait until 9 am. Enter the house. Kill Jearl. Take the basement key. Go downstairs. Kill Saveri. Take the orders. Return to Jauffre. 73.6.183.171 00:12, 30 January 2023 (UTC)

Take the Note[edit]

For some reason, I did not pick up the note in the basement and I could not find the second spy. When I saw the note while searching around, I picked it up, and suddenly Saveri Faram was upstairs. I think it more depended on your timing. They both have entirely different schedules. I clearly remember having to kill them both in the room before going down to take the scroll. You could have just caught her as she was completing another task in her busy schedule. 24.233.128.66 23:22, 28 September 2009 (UTC)

Default class?[edit]

Am I correct in assuming that the note recovered in Jearl's basement shows that the default class for the player is Imperial? In the note, it references an 'Imperial agent', who closed the Kvatch Oblivion Gate. --Merco 06:37, 5 November 2007 (EST)

It may actually refer to the "agent of the Imperials". The player is an agent of the empire, no matter to which race he belongs. That's my view on it. --Mankar CamoranTCE 08:26, 5 November 2007 (EST)
However, it is true that the default race for the player is Imperial. See Bendu Olo. But this note in Jearl's basement has nothing to do with that. It's possible to make the player's actual name, race, and class appear in books and notes, so there'd be no reason for a note to have "default" information shown. --TheRealLurlock Talk 09:10, 5 November 2007 (EST)

The orders says that they should find any information on the imperial agent, ie the agent of the empire, they really dunno alot about it, and we must assume that it was written prior to the events in their base which would seem why they state the player as an imperial agent, because they dont know anything about it.— Unsigned comment by 87.57.15.153 (talk) at 15:01 on 11 January 2008‎

I think it's fairly clear - Imperial Agent means agent of the Emperor and his heirs; the one trying to stop the Mythic Dawn. –RpehTCE 10:39, 11 January 2008 (EST)

Incorrect subtitles[edit]

Is it worth mentioning that Jauffre has incorrect subtitles when giving you this mission? When he asks you to find out waht the spies are planning, it is spelt 'plannning'. --Merco 06:39, 5 November 2007 (EST)

Savari Disappearance[edit]

Saveri Bug?[edit]

I've deleted the following from the article:

  • It is also possible for Saveri to disappear. Her marker disappear, but the quest will not update.
    • A possible work around is to speak to a Bruma denizen about "Strangers" before reentering Jaerl's house again.

Basically, I'm not sure what about this is supposed to be a bug rather than standard gameplay. Furthermore, the information seems to be completely redundant.

Saveri never has a "marker", assuming marker is supposed to mean a quest marker. You don't need to kill Saveri to complete the quest, so having trouble finding her is not in and of itself a quest bug. The detailed walkthrough already describes the fact that Saveri may be hard to find, and includes some tips on finding her. Finally, the information that talking to beggars adds an update is already provided in the quest notes. --NepheleTalk 18:50, 8 July 2008 (EDT)

Do any of the two spies exist prior to this quest?[edit]

I've been searching everywhere, but I can't seem to find them. Anybody knows, if they can be found somewhere? Krusty 20:44, 11 April 2009 (EDT)

They both start the game in Jearl's house, but disabled. They appear at stage 20 in the quest. –RpehTCE 03:53, 12 April 2009 (EDT)

Jearl and Saveri[edit]

Looking in the Construction Set, it appears as though Saveri will go to the runestone at 6 pm and leave at 4 am. Jearl has a more complex script and it appears that he will sneak to the runestone between the hours of 4 pm and 2 am. Then if both Saveri and the player are nearby, he'll sneak away from it slightly to the tall stone at the bend in the road and stay there for 2 hours. Then he'll sneak back. Assuming that I've understood this correctly, and if you count standing near the road as "close enough" to being at the runestone, then the two of them would be there between 6 pm and 2 am, give or take some time for Saveri to arrive.

I'm a little unclear on how some of the elements of the schedule interact, though, so I'd appreciate if somebody could verify this in-game, as I don't have the time right now. —Robin Hood (TalkE-mailContribs) 03:08, 28 September 2009 (UTC)

If you look at Jearl and Saveri Faram's pages you will find my in-game observations in all their glory, including approximate arrival times and the like. Remember to read through the notes sections as well. The schedules are based on hours upon hours of stalking and should be pretty accurate. Woops, shoulda thought of that, but I wasn't really thinking about it. Looking at it, some of the details don't quite match what I saw in the CS, so I'll have to have another look and see how they compare. Saveri, especially, should be much simpler than described, though I don't doubt your observations, so I'm curious what's causing her to go back and forth like she does. That's easy enough to figure out in-game, though, when I get around to it. Once done, I'll hopefully be in a better position to comment on when they both appear at the runestone and when they don't. From the looks of what you've said in their respective schedules, though, it may not be entirely reliable. I'll check later tonight or tomorrow, though. I will look forward to your investigation. It's been quite some time since I wrote the schedules - and since then, I have learned a lot about NPC behavior, especially that dirty word: "random". Saveri's schedule seems unusual compared to many other NPCs, but who knows? I remember (vaguely) testing the whole "Jearl starts sneaking when Saveri arrives"-thing and I think it is true, especially because she wouldn't sneak if Saveri was dead. Ummm...yeah..."tomorrow". I've posted Jearl and Saveri's schedules to their respective talk pages and tweaked their written schedules as well. In terms of when they're both at the stone at the same time, I believe it would happen any time after about 8pm, as you observed (Fast Travel tends to alter this and may put it right at 6pm, I think...you can test that if you want), but if the player is undetected, they'll move as the player approaches. If the player approaches openly, they'll attack. So the best way to get them both at once is to run up to them waving your arms like a madman to attract their attention. ;) I won't change the VN tag here for now, pending confirmation of these observations. Reasons for Jearl's/Saveri's Death[edit]

What causes the townspeople/guards to kill them sometimes? For example, 3 seconds after I killed Saveri, Jearl died. What would cause this? Did she conjure her armor, or what? It happened to early that I didn't even know a second target was even there. — Unsigned comment by Aurri (talkcontribs)

Bug?[edit]

I have run into a serious bug on the PC with this quest. I kill the two spies inside the house, go into the basement, and enter Bruma Caverns from there. When I try to leave the caverns by the other door, the one north of the city, the game crashes and dumps me onto the desktop. This doesn't happen every time, but it's close to 90%. It may be my computer or my setup, but perhaps not. If others experience this, is there a workaround, and should it be added to the article? -- Wordmama 20:41, 10 July 2011 (UTC)

Guest poster: It's not just you, happened to me twice. Exact same place. I had to just leave from the way I came and had no further problems with this quest. I am on the Steam version, GOTY Deluxe.

I have a problem.[edit]

This might be a bug, But whatev. I believe I've found a new error?[edit]

So, I was wandering throughout the Spies Quest, and found the rune stone that the Blades Captain told me to go to; sort of as help. I waited until dusk for him (it was 2:00 PM at the time) and apparently I could not find him. So, I rested until 10:00, when I received this following message;

"The Mythic Dawn agent named Saveri Faram is dead. I should report to Jauffre that both the Mythic Dawn spies are dead.

However, when I received this message, Saveri had never even been mentioned nor seen throughout my entire time throughout the quest (not even when I killed the first guard, Jearl and looted her basement), so I assume this is a bug...

There's a possibility that she was killed by an animal. There are indeed two spies, Jearl and Saveri, but the latter doesn't actually get mentioned until she's dead. So, yeah, she must have dies some other way, either by a creature or by falling off the high cliffs around. They do weird stuff like that. AyaHawkeye (talk) 18:26, 24 April 2013 (GMT)

How the bug played out for me

After getting the quest I went back to Bruma and asked around about the strangers. I wanted to make a quick ingredient run so I went back out the city gate and Jearle was just standing there, and immediately attacked me. I killed her, and now Saveri has disappeared. I've staked out every place she is supposed to be for a full 24 hours each and she is just gone. Am on XBox version so know of no way around. 69.158.122.105 19:22, 15 May 2013 (GMT)

I got a massive bug. Completed Spies quest, but when I save, then reload, it only gives me the option to reload the save before Spies was completed. (no save later is listed) and I did Spies over and over several times - I cannot continue past Spies - I've now deleted my game and when I find patience, I will reload....
