Spelling[edit]

I removed two instances of "rumours" from this article. Do we prefer US Speeling (;-) in general? Somercy 13:00, 16 February 2007 (EST)

Glad you asked! I just added that info to the style guide and Spelling pages a couple of days ago (prompting a fair bit of discussion), specifically to address questions like this that might come up. --Nephele 13:30, 16 February 2007 (EST)

Buggy[edit]

This specific quest has been very buggy for me in both games that i have started on Oblivion. The first time i did it, i reunited the brothers, only to go an save their house but finding no goblins to attack...perhaps i missed something? The marker remains on the house but i find nothing there to do and returning to them only gets me the same old dialogue about how i should help them. The second time i played this quest on my new account another interesting bug happened. After talking to neither of the brothers i spoke to the sober one for the first time for him to tell me "oh u found my brother" and he walked to see him, but i never spoke to his brother in the first place for him to say that. I havent had any kind of troubles like this with other quests.

I'm also finding it buggy. Guilbert has made it back to Chorrol and is in the tavern; whenever I speak to him he just says "Can't talk now, I've got to meet my brother!" and dismisses me, and then just stands there. When I go talk to Reynold I can tell him his brother is on his way, and he's all "I better sober up, then" and just sits there drinking still.

Green Marker not appearing[edit]

In an attempt to follow Guilbert back to Chorrol, I've only got the red marker that shows my destination in Chorrol. Is there a way to get the green marker to appear instead? I'm sure I can follow him as my Agility is quite high, but the trail of the bandit and maurader "bread crumbs" is rather sparse. Also, can I just to straight to Chorrol and wait for him? I ask because for some other quests, I've lost others that were supposed to follow/be followed (usually while changing areas/going through doors, etc. and have to go back an area to get them.)134.205.115.130 14:19, 28 August 2007 (EDT)DVSDavis

A red quest marker just means that there is a door between you and the quest target. The only way to get the quest marker to turn to green is to be in the same worldspace as the target. In this case, it probably means that Guilbert is already inside The Grey Mare in Chorrol; it would only be green if both you and Guilbert were standing outside somewhere, or if both of you were standing inside the Grey Mare. But there's also no reason at all to follow Guilbert. He is essential and therefore won't get killed by any random critters on the roads (and is much less likely to encounter any enemies if you're not around). He's not being told to follow you; his instructions are just to travel to Chorrol, and your location has no influence on his actions. I've never had problems with him making it to Chorrol on his own. --NepheleTalk 14:46, 28 August 2007 (EDT)
I am running behind him, i checked the active quest and it was on something else (dunno why) but when selecting the actual current quest it changed to show the green marker for Guilbert on the map. He does seem quite capable in the wilderness. 71.168.1.123 19:01, 28 August 2007 (EDT)DVSDavis

Separated at birth, sins of the father...[edit]

This rings giant Klingon shaped alarm bells. I'm sure at least some of these quests reference Worf-episodes from STTNG. — Unsigned comment by 121.208.21.18 (talk)

These are classical references. Go read some Shakespeare. (And even he was referencing Euripides...) --Laisren 19:34, 28 February 2008 (EST)
Shakespeare did it too, but I think he was referencing Plautus' Menaechmi. I think if we're to say the story originated anywhere, best to use the very first story the derivative works were based on. I came to the article to suggest there be some mention of Plautus' Menaechmi, but it may be more appropriate in the Pop-Culture References, under Literature, in Oblivion:Easter Eggs.--PaulyPorphyria (talk) 05:05, 6 September 2019 (UTC)

Bug?[edit]

Can someone look at this bug added by 84.208.182.226:

As the brothers are about to speak, if they are at The Grey Mare, Reynald may be sitting in the SW corner of the inn, drinking beer, without walking to Guilbert to speak to him. In this occation, they will not speak to each other, but if you talk to Reynald, he will act as they have spoken together, allowing the quest to continue.

It doesn't seem like an actual bug in the truest form of the word. --Mr. Oblivion(T-C) 10:06, 22 June 2009 (EDT)

In my experience, Reynald never walks towards Guilbert. It's the other way around. Reynald always stays put. But I don't know if that matters. Wolok gro-Barok 10:12, 22 June 2009 (EDT)
That is what I always thought as well. I will keep in removed unless someone can verify this completely. --Mr. Oblivion(T-C) 10:25, 22 June 2009 (EDT)
Okay, I just tested this. The "bug" only occurs if the two meet up at The Grey Mare. Once you go anywhere near the drinking Reynald, you will get the quest update (stage 25). After that, Reynald will get out of his chair for a brief moment (which means, no conversation between the two) and just sit down again. When you talk to Guilbert afterwards, the quest will complete itself. I don't know if this is noteworthy, but those are the facts. It could me included as a brief note on the quest page, but after all, it's impossible NOT to complete the quest, and therefore might be irrelevant. Krusty 11:56, 22 June 2009 (EDT)
Since the outcome is not altered, I do not think it is noteworthy. --Mr. Oblivion(T-C) 12:00, 22 June 2009 (EDT)
I think it is irrelevant as well. Wolok gro-Barok 12:04, 22 June 2009 (EDT)

Unique dialog?[edit]

Although there is supposed to be a unique dialog if you follow them until they meet the first time, this often gets disrupted by the fact Reynald can't pull his face away from a tankard long enough in The Grey Mare to get up and talk. Using a combination of nudging characters out of the way, "waiting", and reloading from saves it is possible to un-bug this by using "wait" until 12:00AM - not approaching Reynald when Guilbert is present (so you don't trigger the quest update and miss the dialog). He gets up out of his chair and begins to walk to the door at this time, running into Guilbert on his way. The quest update and dialog should happen when they are in speaking distance.

Why is this under the bugs section? They've met and completed their whole conversation in Reynald's house both times I completed the quest, after the update even. --142.161.43.198 06:01, 13 February 2010 (UTC)

Add to the notes or bugs section?[edit]

Jauffre can give this quest during the Weynon Priory quest if he is in Cheydinhal and you have asked another Cheydinhal resident about rumors to get the dialog option to start this quest even though he most likely wouldn't have seen either brother. 67.177.243.17 05:37, 26 August 2012 (UTC)
