Removed note[edit]

Removed notes about enemies fighting amongst themselves -- this is a not uncommon bug in Oblivion caused by one accidentally hitting another. Endareth 01:36, 11 April 2006 (EDT)

Option question[edit]

In the notes section it says that there is an option for "20% and no more." When I played through this there was no option such as this, but it may be related to mercantile skill or some other attribute. Is there any indication of what that may be? -Arador

Bugfixing[edit]

No chance anyone can list some of the key mission states for un-breaking it, theres a few ways you can break the sequence which results in Umbacano never giving you the mission to go to the fane if you have already acquired the tablet (This can be achieved by using high acrobatics to leap up and go backwards through the level as there are no one way safety doors to prevent this, the tablet isn't immediatly obvious but can be recovered, triggering the goons spawn outside the cave but not giving umbacano the requried dialogue to complete the task, nor will he give the task in the future) --85.62.18.3 05:44, 7 September 2007 (EDT)

Conflicting info[edit]

In the quest description it says that when you meet the Khajiit named S'razirr he will join you for half of the gold. But in the Journal entries it says for a Quarter of the reward he will help you. Anyone know which one is true? - 01:25, 22 February 2008 206.223.208.20

PS3 Notes[edit]

After arriving at Malada I approached S'razirr who is at the top of a steep hill facing the entrance. I got his disposition up to 100 and proceeded to enlist his help. At first, he demanded 50% of the reward so I refused and countered with a 10% offer. He then refused that and gave a 25% ultimatum. I accepted then went into Malada and retrieved the carving. Just before exiting the ruin I saved so I could try the various possibilities:

1. Hand the carving over and attempt to pickpocket it back - I tried this numerous times and was not successful. Once you exit Malada you can not get very close to Maric before the dialog freezes you. Then after it is finished it is impossible to catch him before he jumps on his horse. This is with 100 skill in both Athletics and Acrobatics. I then tried to chase him on his horse and was also not successful since the track he takes is very erratic like running in circles and doubling back. Perhaps if one were fast and accurate with a Paralyze on Target you could stop him.

2. Let S'razirr do all the fighting for you and maybe he will get killed so you don't have to pay him - This does not work either since the two henchmen just stand there and let S'razirr sink arrows into them. Also, after one of them is dead he runs off to let you fend for yourself.

3. Fight all of them - this works and is quite easy if you have high sneak, marksman, and acrobatics. Once the dialog ends run around the pedestal to your left, away from the henchmen towards Maric, then get to the top of the hill as fast as you can. The goons down below will never see you or come up and you can fling arrows or magic at them.

4. Let S'razirr assist you and then make sure he does not make it back to town alive - This is the easiest as S'razirr will kill one of the goons while you take the other. When this is done, quickly catch and trail S'razirr back to town. Since the game puts creatures and bandits in your vicinity S'razirr will have to fight them also. It is simple to just lead in front of S'razirr then when the Danger music starts run back to him and jump over him leaving him to take the brunt of the attack. Since he does not heal himself he does not last long. At level 4 he was gone after two wolves, a bandit archer, then an Imp. When I looted his body he yielded a couple hundred iron, steel, and silver arrows! Zack - 07 Mar 2008

Killing Claude[edit]

I've just killed Claude several times and verified that it always counts as murder. Killing him whilst his allies are alive even results in them shouting the usual "Murder!" response. I suppose the fact that he tries to run away from you at the start means that the murder logic is triggered. –RpehTCE 10:33, 29 April 2008 (EDT)

I think because he never really gets into Combat with you, he just runs to Roxey Inn while the others fight you. I could be wrong though. Lucky the Cat Guy 21:29, 6 August 2008 (EDT)
In my case Claude started attacking S'razirr instead of running away. If I kill Calude to protect S'razirr it also counts as murder. All I can do is constantly paralyze Claude and heal S'razirr if I want S'razirr to survive. This way S'razirr kills Claude and I'm not a murderer.
I skipped over the S'razirr part entirely and Shadowmere attracted his attention by helping in the fight, so I killed him and his pals shouted the murder response. Just adding a detail if anybody thinks it's important enough to add as a note here or somewhere else. Doctormccorm 09:57, 14 March 2011 (UTC)

Claude and Thugs[edit]

I left Malada and Claude didnt come nor did his thugs, why is this? -Wobbo10 10-- July 2008

It is possible that the thugs had been killled before; none of them are ever essential. This doesn't explain why Claude didn't turn up though... --LordDagon 04:06, 10 July 2008 (EDT)
You could have killed them in Roxey Inn. Claude appears there even before you ever meet Umbacano, too. Lucky the Cat Guy 21:30, 6 August 2008 (EDT)
If the thugs are taken out of the equation, Maric won't show up because he's too cowardly/smart (delete as preferred ;) ) to risk his neck confronting you by himself. That's what my Strategy Guide says, anyhow. 86.3.148.103 19:32, 18 October 2008 (EDT) Jordy
Looks like the strategy guide is almost right, but is oversimplifying things. If all three thugs are dead then Maric won't be moved outside Malada, but he'll still head towards the player. That means if you walk back slowly towards the Imperial City you could well run into Maric on the way. –RpehTCE 02:48, 19 October 2008 (EDT)

PS3 Glitch?[edit]

i also noticed that, after you enlist S'razirr's help outside of the ruins, when you select any of his dialogue options, he doesnt say anything, instead he just grins at you for a few senconds and then returns to the dialogue screen — Unsigned comment by Baconator96 (talkcontribs) at 03:27 on 12 December 2008‎

I noticed something similar. I am on PC, 1.2.0416, no mods. In my case, I didn't even make a deal with him until *after* I had gone through Malada and the fight with the other thugs outside the ruin. After I made the deal with him, and then re-entered dialogue with him, his three options were "Claude Maric", "Prophet", and "Rumors". Selecting Maric just gave me the "grin silently" treatment. The other two worked correctly; S'razirr spoke the appropriate lines. (Prophet is there because I have Knights of the Nine, and Rumors is a standard option.) I went ahead and listed this as a verified bug, since two people have seen it (albeit 12+ years apart). 73.3.58.200 09:21, 16 March 2021 (UTC)

Claude's Escape[edit]

Moved from the article:
It is possible to paralyze Claude's horse to prevent him escaping. He will dismount and attack you instead.

If Claude Maric doesn't have the carving, he will use the "Flee not Combat" AI Package (otherwise he uses "Escort"). So is this only the case when he does have the carving? --Timenn < talk > 11:00, 15 April 2009 (EDT)

From rich, just a gamer!![edit]

(moved from the article) i actually found the camp and killed all that where there first by accident, so i made no deal with anyone, hence when i came out claude missed me the first time and i sold off all the stuff i had then came back to get the rest of the loot, he then approached me and i refused to give him the plate claude then said kill him but there was no one there to kill me because i had already killed them, so i killed claude and continued on eith the story with no probs — Unsigned comment by 71.3.140.246 (talk)

Fane Mission key gone[edit]

I got the first three statues to Umbaccano and he gave me the new mission. He gave me the sketch of the High fane. I then finished getting all of the statues for him before doing the Nothing you can Possess quest. After I gave him the last statue he didn't say anythiing about the new mission. So I went to the High Fane and got all the way to the end when I realized that I didn't have the key?? Umbaccano still just thanks me for getting him all the statues and doesn't mention anything else. Claude stands outside his house 24/7. I tried going to Herminia Cinna's home to steal the Aleid crown, hoping to jump in the middle of the story, but it's not there.

Claude attacking S'razirr[edit]

There seems to be some confusion about what Claude is supposed to do when his thugs ambush you. I think the Bethesda developers themselves don't know exactly what he's supposed to do. Claude is actually supposed to escape on horseback to Roxey Inn if you don't give him the quest item. However, he will NEVER do it, because he attacks S'razirr instead. And if he doesn't attack him, S'razirr will attack Claude. Either way, to ensure that Claude continues with his escape package is to let him kill S'razirr.

First I thought it's a bug, that Claude isn't supposed to attack S'razirr. But here's the thing, it's NOT a bug, Claude is specifically set to attack him! The game mods Claude's disposition towards S'razirr, and the developers knew what would happen, they knew that Claude would interrupt his escape package and get involved in the fight. S'razirr has exactly 0 chance to defeat Claude, which means you need to help him. Assaulting or murdering Claude does not count as a crime (no bounty), however, it still counts as assault or murder respectively, because Claude is only hostile towards S'razirr.

If you kill and reanimate one of the other two thugs using the Staff of Worms, the dead guy will attack Claude. Why? Claude is not hostile towards the player and reanimated npcs are only supposed to attack the player's enemies. If the reanimated NPC kills Claude, everybody in the area will shout "Murder!" again.

In any case, it is impossible for Claude to survive this encounter, so his escape package as well as all scripting for the next quest where he's supposed to appear is completely useless, unless you allow him to kill S'razirr. But why would I allow him to attack my allies?

I recommend changing the script governing the fight between Claude's thugs vs. player/S'razirr. Open Quest MS22, Quest Stage 60. Change the script like this:

; player fights maric
if ms22.makedeal == 1
SrazirrRef.setfactionrank claudemaricthugfaction, -1
ClaudeMaricRef.moddisposition SrazirrRef 30 ; Claude shouldn't interfere
else
SrazirrRef.ModDisposition player -100
endif
setfactionreaction claudemaricthugfaction playerfaction 0
ClaudeMaricRef.evp
RigmorRef.ModDisposition player -100
BrucetusFestiniusRef.ModDisposition player -100

This will establish the following relations:

-Claude doesn't hate S'razirr, so he will continue with his Escape package

- Rigmor and Brucetus hate the player and possibly S'razirr if you persuaded S'razirr to help you earlier. S'razirr hates Rigmor and Brucetus if bribed, otherwise he will be hostile towards the player.

If player is invisible, enemies won't search for him, which is annoying.

WRFan 01:21, 21 October 2009 (UTC)

Another alternative way is by just using console and give him a high personality eg."setav personality 100" and claude won't attack him anymore. i tried it out myself. --Jailman 12:41, 10 January 2010 (UTC)

High Fane Key[edit]

Does anyone else wind up with this key being a quest object after the quest is done? I figured I'd confirm that it is a bug before editing the page. --Foubister 16:04, 5 November 2009 (UTC)

Actually, the key should be removed from your inventory the moment you use it. It was removed in my case. --Timenn-<talk> 22:12, 9 November 2009 (UTC)
I went back to an earlier save and found the problem. The key was removed for me as well but I wound up getting a second copy off of Claude Maric's body. I always chase and kill him after I kill his thugs. No bug, just me not paying attention to what I'm getting when I click Take All. Should I add the fact that he has a copy of it to the Keys page? --Foubister 17:55, 10 November 2009 (UTC)

Book script[edit]

Don't know if it's worth mentioning but I couldn't figure out why I wasn't getting the dialog options for already having read the book, Cleasing the Fane. This is because buying it from Phintias and reading the book from your inventory doesn't trigger the script. You need to drop it on the ground and then read it that way. — Unsigned comment by 66.190.29.247 (talk) at 00:35 on 30 March 2010

I just tried it myself and you're right. That's definitely worth a mention. Robin HoodTalk 23:02, 30 March 2010 (UTC)

More about Claude and killing Claude and I'm really confused[edit]

This is really odd. In my last playthrough on a different character, I was able to kill Claude during the brawl outside Malada without it counting as a murder. I reloaded the same save several times just to test this and kept getting the same result. It was never counted as murder.

Well, I just reached the same point in my current game, except now when I kill Claude, it gets treated as murder every time. I attacked him while he was engaged with S'razzir and he gave me the "I'm on your side!" spiel as if he were an ally/follower (which is something he wasn't doing in my earlier playthrough). I have no idea what could possibly be difference between my current game and my previous playthrough that could account for getting two different results. Could Claude's disposition towards the player vary for some reason and affect this?

Furthermore, in one testing, I summoned a Dremora Lord to help fight against Claude's goons. Except they were already dead by the time I did this (Reynald and Guilbert whom I keep as followers already took care of them). So my Dremora Lord just stood there doing nothing as he always does when there's no hostiles around. Except Claude, who hadn't left yet, spotted my Dremora Lord and attacked it, which turned my Dremora Lord hostile against Claude, killing him. This also counted as a murder! A guy attacks one of my summoned creatures that wasn't even hostile to him, my summoned creature defends itself, and I get charged with murder?

They really botched this part of the quest here.

Regarding pre-killing the thugs...[edit]

I had the bright idea of killing the thugs before I entered the ruins (saving first of course, I didn't know what would happen). I was certainly strong enough to have no trouble with them but that isn't the point.

In the main article, the notes say that attacking the thugs will alert the others but in my case it didn't at all. I was going to pay the Khajiit (I felt sorry for him) and I sure as hell wasn't going to give Claude the tablet so I was going to kill them anyway, but when I attacked the first guy only he reacted.

The girl just ambled about minding her own business while I cut him down. Same thing when I turned on her. No help, no trouble. Is this the workings of a glitch or bug of some sort or is the article wrong?

It's worth noting I made the deal with the Khajiit before I got sword-happy. Bellboyjr 05:48, 12 July 2010 (UTC)

Since their responsibility is low and you probably had a high enough disposition with you, they were individually willing to overlook the crime. This only happens if your disposition with them is high enough. You probably have either high fame or a high personality attribute. Vesna 04:48, 14 July 2010 (UTC)

Odd Quest Entry[edit]

Is entry 44 supposed to say "Screw S'razzir out of his money"? It seems odd considering that you haven't had a chance to pay him yet.--TheAlbinoOrcany_questions? 23:08, 4 September 2010 (UTC)

Yup. It's even in a code comment for that entry:
; screw S'razirr out of his money
Srazirrref.moddisposition player -30
Not all Quest Stages happen linearly, though. Sometimes they jump around. In this case, it's in response to dialogue entries, so it'll be based on when you talk to him and choose those entries which looks like it wouldn't be till close to the end of the quest. Stage 45 is in the same boat. Robin Hoodtalk 05:45, 5 September 2010 (UTC)

Stealing High Fane Key[edit]

Moved from article: If you pickpocket from Claude Maric after exiting the ruin, taking the High Fane Key from Claude will give you a stolen quest key, that cannot be dropped, or fenced. In which, upon return to Umbacano's residence, he and his guards will attack you.

While stealing the key may give you a quest key, which cannot be dropped or fence, I don't see any reason this would cause Umbacano and his guards to attack you. Robin Hoodtalk 00:02, 6 September 2010 (UTC)

Dissapearing Claude[edit]

I was ambushed by Claude and his men outside of Malada, having previously recruited S'razzir's help. Claude and S'razzir started attacking each other. I killed the other two thugs and then turned around to help S'razzir, but Claude was gone, and his horse was still there. I couldn't interact with S'razzir because he was still in attack mode and he kept running in between the entrance to Malada and the campsite, looking for Claude. Claude did not show up outside of Nenalata with Umbacano in the next quest, and I checked Roxey Inn and the Tiber Septim Hotel, where is he?? — Unsigned comment by 67.71.47.12 (talk) on 3 October 2010

Dead is the most likely answer. Claude isn't essential, and so can easily die during the quest. His death shouldn't intefere with the Nenalata quest. -- Jplatinum16 14:40, 3 October 2010 (UTC)

Denying the Quest?[edit]

(moved from the article)
  • It is possible to skip this quest entirely by denying it from Umbacano. This will start the next quest, Secrets of the Ayleids.
What does "denying it from Umbacano" mean? Does it mean "turning down the quest" or something else? If the former, when do you get the chance to turn it down. Please write this into the walkthrough. rpeh •TCE 00:38, 24 November 2010 (UTC)

Deleted Notes[edit]

These are the notes I considered unnecesary:

  • If you give the carving to Claude and subsequently pickpocket it from him, he apparently never notices that he wasn't the one who brought it to Umbacano.
  • If you refuse to give Claude the carving, he will say, "As you wish. Too bad, I was just getting to like you. Kill him." Unlike most dialogues in the game, the dialogue assumes you are playing a male character and uses "him" even if your character is female.
  • You can also yield to the ambushers and they will stop fighting and disappear. It will help if you raise their dispositions before entering the ruin. Charm spells will also work if you have already exited the ruin.
  • If you are lucky enough to follow Claude in his escape, do so. Let him fight off the woodland creatures, and eventually one of them will kill him. Then you can loot his corpse without having to kill him yourself.
  • There is an Inn along the red ring road north of Imperial City called the Roxey Inn. Claude's henchmen hang out here when not adventuring. Killing them there prior to this quest may not be the smartest thing to do as there are Imperial Guards and other locals present at the inn. If you lower any of their dispositions enough, they will attack you, allowing you to kill them in advance with no ill effects to the questline and no bounty. Claude flees to this inn if he survives the fight outside the ruin.
  • This quest is named after a line from the movie Raiders of the Lost Ark, where Rene Belloq, upon ambushing and taking an artifact away from Indiana Jones, says, "And once again, Dr. Jones, we find that there is nothing you can possess which I cannot take away". This quest is also loosely modeled after that scene (and story in general).
  • Claude Maric will tell you that Malada "is an Ayleid ruin in the far west of this province, up in the Valus Mountains". In fact it lies to the east of Cyrodiil, and is in the Nibenay Basin region.
  • Confronting Claude's thugs before entering Malada produces some interesting excuses. Rigmor will say, "Beautiful countryside, don't you think? We're just doing a bit of hunting and sightseeing, not that it's any of your business"; Brucetus Festinius opines "Strange ruins, huh? You'd have to be crazy to go in there. I'm just here for the scenery and fresh air", while S'razirr moans that "You're probably wondering what this one is doing in this gods-forsaken wilderness. Same here. S'razirr doesn't get paid nearly enough for this."
  • If you run back into Malada, they will not chase you inside. With a high enough Personality or with charm spells, you can go back and successfully yield to the three mercenaries.

I place them here so they can be added back if needed. --Wizy 03:14, 4 December 2010 (UTC)

Good work! I re-added the dialogue bug (with the gender mistake), since it is addressed by the UOP; otherwise, this slew of unimportant info looks much better on this talk page! --Krusty 06:59, 4 December 2010 (UTC)
I almost just did it myself, but I figured I'd better put the question to the group first - I think the Raiders of the Lost Ark line should be re-added. This kind of interesting tie-in trivia that's found on other pages as well. It could be added as a note, or with a quick "Easter Egg" heading, or a link could be posted that leads to this reference on the Easter Egg page.

Dead and Not Dead Claude[edit]

Upon exiting Malada, gave Maric the statue, then proceeded to attack him (sidenote: the Khajiit was bribed, but I think directly attacking Maric caused him to attack me too, can't be sure, running too fast). Maric went invisible, managed to get to his horse, and took off. I was able to track him down, anyway, due to a particularly helpful Timber Wolf. I killed the horse while Maric was on it, and Maric himself fell off and was apparently "dead" (lying on the ground) despite being "alive" (can talk to him). I pickpocketed him for just about everything - he didn't catch it. After a short while, the body completely disappeared. He was not marked as Essential, but I certainly couldn't kill him while he was on the ground, and there was a life bar indicating he had taken some damage from the earlier attacks. --DaedalusMachina 08:37, 27 December 2010 (UTC)

Moved notes[edit]

  • If you have the Cowl of Nocturnal on when you first aproach ruins, you will be attaked by Maric's mercenaries (but not by S'razirr). Killing them BEFORE entering the ruins will help you to easily defeat Maric if you decide to engage on combat with him after retrieving the carving.

Do we really have to mention all of the possible effects the Cowl has on things? --AKB Talk 18:52, 12 February 2011 (UTC)

No we don't, we should generally not list them on quest pages. Razor 21:15, 12 February 2011 (UTC)

Moved notes (2)[edit]

  • If your acrobatics skill is not high enough to jump over the rubble from the wall, you can simply drag the large blocks out of the way.
  • Killing Claude counts as a murder and will trigger the Dark Brotherhood storyline.
  • Rigmor is carrying a note from Maric, in which, among other things, he expresses his concern over S'razirr's loyalties and admits that they have been shortchanging the Khajiit.
  • S'razirr can carry a large supply of high quality, leveled arrows. If you are into archery this may be reason enough to not let him survive the ambush.
  • You can kill Claude's henchmen before entering the ruin. Attacking one will alert the others, though.
  • It is easy to simply submit to Claude and give him the carving, then immediately pickpocket the carving from him and return it to Umbacano. You still get the gold, but without fighting.

I've been pruning the notes from the quest pages. Feel free to re-add them after leaving a message here on why you did so. --AKB Talk 16:34, 21 February 2011 (UTC)

Smooth talking the attackers.[edit]

If you don't get the Khajiit to help before you enter, a strange bug can occour. If you yield to the Kajiit after you enter combat, and then get his rep up to 65, and bargain for his help, all three attackers will stop fighting you. — Unsigned comment by 75.85.6.28 (talk) at 13:40 on June 16, 2011

Another way of dealing with mercenaties to be added.[edit]

It is also possible to cast enthralling presence on them and then yield them. They will stop fighting, but for higher chance of success, weapon must be sheathed.

You can also just give Rigmor and Brucetus poisoned apples while they're loafing about the camp, and wait until meal time for them to off themselves, then go through the ruins. Your final battle will probably only be against the khajit, who is not that strong (unless of course you found him and talked to him; I never get to see the guy until the fight). 99.239.202.171 10:27, 7 October 2011 (UTC)

Fast Travel[edit]

It seems like the trigger for Claude talking to you must be a bit out into the open. Since no one is hostile until/unless you refuse to hand over the carving or attack, it's possible to step outside and (assuming a lack of hostile wildlife in the area) immediately just fast travel away. In my case, Claude returned to the Roxey Inn (on foot, leaving his horse behind) and greeted me with something like, "you won that round, no hard feelings", S'razirr went to meet me at the Tiber Septim for his share, and the other two wound up standing around on the road near Cropsford (when I caught up with them, they were fighting a troll, and then just stood around offering up generic rumors). I don't know if this was a one-off glitch (if the trigger was supposed to be tripped the moment I stepped outside, for instance), or if it's worth mentioning on the article as a way to get around the ambush if it's not. -MuddlingThrough 21:06, 7 August 2011 (UTC)

Confirmed. If you immediately fast travel once leaving Malada, you can avoid the entire encounter with Claude. 24.156.216.144 23:46, 19 September 2011 (UTC)

Moved Notes (3)[edit]

In light of the above post that says it's impossible to immediately pickpocket the carving from Claude after handing it over, this player with maxed sneak waited until he mounted his horse, and then pickpocketed the carving.
The note currently on the wiki: "If you give him the carving and attack him quickly enough" seems almost impossible to carry out. It amounts to split second timing, if at all. There's only about 2 seconds before he turns chameleon and alights his horse, and jumping through the waterfall with a sneak/stab does require good platforming skills.
Even if his health bar is red, he assumes fleeing status hence no dialogue. Tried using paralyse poison. Sneaking avoids the others being alerted, but slows the Player down.
After extensive testing, to get to stage 75, issued console commands moddisposition player -80 to get his disposition to 0 and SetAV confidence 80 so he fights, just in case of a player's winning personality. Turn on god mode (tgm) (just in case there was no deal made with S'razirr) and just hit him a few times without any fatal blows. Spells are okay to. He may get on his horse, but will alight if hit (be careful animal lovers!). He may heal a couple of times, but it seems that a certain amount of combat time for Claude must elapse for stage 75 to be reached. The time factor does not seem to be configurable in the CS.
If one refuses to hand over the statue, where does Claude run off to? Not the Roxey Inn or the Tiber Septim apparently.
Also, for what it's worth, any notes relating to the Cowl of Nocturnal (I don't carry one) on this quest should be returned to the wiki.--Lmstearn (talk) 13:11, 4 August 2014 (GMT)

S'razirr Wants to Make Deal After Battle[edit]

Another oops? If player does not greet S'razirr before obtaining the carving from the ruins, the ambush takes place as before. Hand the carving over to Claude, fight him and the rest of the gang including S'razirr to retake it when surrendered, and S'razirr still wants a cut???--Lmstearn (talk) 14:32, 7 August 2014 (GMT)

I had this happen too. I never talked to S'razirr before I went into Malada. When I came out, I refused to give the carving to Claude and the fight happened. Claude left, Brucetus hung out at Malada, and S'razirr started to walk away. I talked to S'razirr and he still had the whole "let's make a deal" set of dialogue options. 73.3.58.200 09:31, 16 March 2021 (UTC)

One more way for the battle with Claude's thugs to play out[edit]

I had what I consider a slightly odd outcome of the battle with Claude's thugs outside Malada, so I figured I'd note it here. Nothing bad happened; it was just strange to me.

I rode Shadowmere to Malada, and I talked to both Brucetus Festinius and Rigmor at the little camp just west of the entrance. I did the minigame with both of them to raise their dispositions, because I suspected I might have to fight them later. I never met S'razirr before I went in.

I went into Malada, got the carving, came back out, Claude was there, he asked me for it, I told him no, he told the thugs to kill me. Rigmor came at me first, and was beating me pretty good, so I ran back into Malada. She eventually followed, and I killed her in the first room inside Malada.

When I went back out, S'razirr and Brucetus were fighting Shadowmere. They didn't care about me at all. The first time I came out, I thought they wanted to fight Shadowmere and me, so I shot Brucetus a couple of times and got the "I'm on your side!" lines from him. This confused me, so I reloaded to just after killing Rigmor, went outside again, and just stood there, not fighting anybody. S'razirr and Brucetus fought Shadowmere until she went unconscious, and then stopped attacking. I walked up to both of them after that and they were not hostile; I could talk to both of them. S'razirr was stuck in sneak and started walking towards the road; Brucetus seemed to just hang out near the door to Malada.

S'razirr still had all the "make a deal" dialogue options when I talked to him. I made the deal, and when I got back into the Imperial City, he was at the Tiber Septim Hotel, waiting for his cut.
