It may not work in the pc version but in the xbox version of the game if you lock a door with a higher level lock than it already has, then unlock it, nobody would consider it a crime. Anybody else ever try it? 164.107.219.76 17:57, 4 May 2008 (EDT)

Nope, this does not work on the PC.
Perhaps when you did this on the XBox, whoever was watching moved away before you unlocked the higher level? That kind of thing does happen without being noticed, from time to time. 69.181.51.245 12:23, 7 May 2008 (EDT)

Something useful I remember[edit]

Doesn't locking a container make it keep its contents, and therefore, never reset? If so, this would be a good addition--Catmaniac66 12:27, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

From the little I know, (or think I know), about Morrowind, most containers don't reset. The two I know for sure reset are the food&drink ones from the Ahnassi, A Special Friend quest. I'll try to check that out on those. --DevotedInsanity 01:00, 24 March 2010 (UTC)
Locking a container makes no difference. Container resetting is handled completely differently. rpeh •TCE 20:08, 26 August 2010 (UTC)
Lots and lots of containers reset, including most of the "public" ones, like those (both owned and unowed) found strewn about the outdoor areas of towns like Ald-ruhn and Balmora. So do the Mages and Fighters Guild supply chests, but you can't put anything in them anyway. Not sure about generic, owned saltrice sacks, etc., in homes and other interiors. I've never noticed one resetting, but I don't "re-loot" much, since I'm not apt to leave anything behind with better than a 2:1 value-to-weight ratio on the first pass, and I won't go back for bottles and other junk. — Darklocq  ¢ 21:55, 3 April 2017 (UTC)

Clear Unlock[edit]

You can use the console to clear the unlocked message on a door or container. What you need to do is click on the door and then type lock 0 press enter and then type unlock which strangely does not leave an unlocked message.--TheAlbinoOrc 23:23, 19 April 2010 (UTC)

Claims to verify[edit]

The last entry says "It is possible to use Spellmaking vendors to create a spell and then lock a door well in excess of 100 points." Maybe that was true in an old version, but in the last rev, spellmakers' spell magnitudes max at 100, so that would appear to be the maximum lock capability. Unless repeated lock spells "stack"; if they do, that's obviously a bug. Haven't tested this yet, since I can't remember which spellsellers have the customizable lock spell (it's none of the Mages Guild stand-arounds, and our article on Lock doesn't say).

I'm also slightly skeptical that the earlier claim that there's no use for a lock spell over magnitude 1, because no one will ever open it. I would think anyone with Security skill would do so if they were trying to fight you. Haven't tested this either, for the same reason as above. — Darklocq  ¢ 21:55, 3 April 2017 (UTC)

Locking and Unlocking and Crime[edit]

The article originally said: "Note that lockpicking is considered a crime, even on a container that is not owned by anyone and never locked by default." I've tested this, and I believe that is incorrect. Attempting to unlock anything, by pick or spell, is a crime if the thing is owned. Use the console command "tfh" and you can see which containers and doors have an owner.

Try this out in Seyda Neen: The front door into Arrille's tradehouse is locked, but isn't actually assigned an owner. You can unlock it in front of everyone, and you get no bounty. But Eldafire's door to her house nearby, is assigned an owner, and unlocking it (or even attempting to do so) will get you a bounty. It's worth noting that if you successfully unlock an owned item, and lock it again, you can still get reported for attempting to unlock it again.

Now look at Terurise's house nearby. It is not locked by default, and is not assigned an owner. You can cast Lock on this door. Then, you can unlock it, pick or spell or whatever you choose, and nobody will report it as a crime. The same rules apply to containers. Find a basket or something that has no owner, lock it, and unlock it in front of people, and you get no bounty. But, lock the baskets owned by Arrille in his tradehouse, and attempt to unlock them, and it's a crime. Hopefully that all makes sense, and hopefully it's easy enough to test and verify yourself.--Croup shrunk (talk) 01:30, 14 March 2019 (UTC)

Locking an Already-Locked Object[edit]

I'm not sure if I worded that well in the article. If so, hopefully someone else can phrase it better. Basically, the Lock spell can raise a lock's level, but not reduce it. Cast a 100 point Lock spell on a level 50 chest, and the chest will now be level 100. But cast a 50 point Lock spell on a level 100 chest, and the lock level won't change. Note that your spell's magnitude is not added to the lock level. It simply replaces the lock level. The note I removed said you could make locks higher than 100, but I never see it happen. Spellmaking and enchanting won't allow more than one Lock effect, and locking something repeatedly doesn't keep increasing the lock level.--Croup shrunk (talk) 01:30, 14 March 2019 (UTC)

Area modifier does not work with Lock I made a "security training" amulet, and tried to give it an AOE in order to get more lockpick uses per enchant charge, but with area 35, magnitude 1, and "target", it still only locks one out of a group of nearby containers. 68.151.149.168 15:28, 17 May 2019 (UTC)
