Dunstad Grove (also called Fort Dunstad)[1] is a fortified settlement located in a mountain pass of the main road, directly south of Dawnstar, in the province of Skyrim. The fort itself was built around the Pale's main road by the Imperial Legion to serve as a highly effective checkpoint station and prison for some of Skyrim's worst criminals.[2]:643

History[edit]

During the Imperial Simulacrum in the late Third Era, the village of Dunstad Grove was an active settlement. It was ruled by Lord Bjarne, and it had a rivalry with Markarth Side.[3] Dunstad Grove was neighbored by several settlements, including Lainalten to the southwest, Snowhawk to the west, and Stonehills to the northeast.[4]

During the Skyrim Civil War in 4E 201, the ruins of Fort Dunstad were occupied by a local bandit clan, but at this point, an inn known as the Stumbling Sabrecat, was found in Fort Dunstad, and it was run by a Redguard farmer. But the farmer was killed off by the bandits.[1] As the civil war escalated Fort Dunstad would play a pivotal role in the conflict, serving as the Pale's regional stronghold. It was used by the Stormcloaks as their defense in the greater Pale wilderness, against the Imperial Legion, should they invade the area. Should the Legion gain control over Fort Dunstad, they would have control over the Pale.[5]
