Can't get through last gate[edit]

I found a major glitch at the end of this quest well I'm hoping it is anyway because the door leading to Ulien would not open and there was no chain switch or otherwise to open it so I had to Icestorm him to death through the gate. And yes I did pull all the chains in the room with all the floor traps. If I missed a black book because of this I will be upset so please someone help me understand what in Oblivion happened. — Unsigned comment by Lycanmoonlight (talkcontribs) at 21:46 on 7 December 2012‎

I had the exact same problem (I used Mayhem to take out everyone but Ulien, and tried all of the Destruction spells but he kept running to the back). It turns out that there are two pull chains in the last room on the right, and not just the one that lowers the last large gate before the main room. It's on a pillar or wall right in front of where the other chain is, and as you'll see, it was/is very easy to miss. --Timfever (talk) 02:22, 8 December 2012 (GMT)
Oh and FWIW
You didn't miss anything like a Black Book, but you ought to go back for the some pretty decent loot. --Timfever (talk) 02:29, 8 December 2012 (GMT)
I had the same problem as well so i just shot them to death with some arrows but i wanted to get the loot in the chest so i was determined to find out what was going on, theres another chain where the last chain is that is on a pillar type thing around traps, it may take you a while to find it though - rachell. idk how to make a username on this xD — Unsigned comment by 70.168.15.72 (talk) at 17:54 on 7 January 2013
Sorry no one answered your question about making a username, see this page. It's fast, easy, and free. :) — ABCface 05:13, 11 January 2013 (GMT)

Gold Reward?[edit]

I can't see the script details in the Construction Kit yet, but it looks like there's a leveled gold reward associated with this quest. I see no mention of gold on the page, though, so I'm adding the table here on the talk page pending in-game confirmation that you actually get gold as well as Severin Manor. Robin Hoodtalk 20:14, 9 December 2012 (GMT)

Reward[edit]

Levels Reward
1-29 1500
30-39 2500
40-49 5000
50-59 7500
60+ 10,000
I just loaded a save from before completing the quest, finished it again, and verified that the leveled gold reward is added when you speak to Morvayn at quest completion. At level 64, I received 10,000. — ABCface 04:46, 11 December 2012 (GMT)
Okay, I'll move this onto the page then. Robin Hoodtalk 23:06, 17 December 2012 (GMT)

Prerequisite Quest[edit]

One edit to the quest page noted March of the Dead as a prerequisite to be contacted about this quest, while another user added a note saying The Final Descent needed to be done before completing the quest. Can someone confirm which of these it is? I had completed both of these quests before receiving this one, so I can't verify that it was one or the other myself. — ABCface 00:06, 11 December 2012 (GMT)

Bug fix?
Veleth, the quest-giver, did not have any dialogue to begin this quest. I spoke to him several times over the course of a few days, and got nothing. I then picked up the wine from the previous quest (I had left it in the barrel). Almost immediately, Veleth gave me the quest. Perhaps not leaving the wine behind is necessary to get the quest? The quest the above user is referring to is Recipe for Distraction. I had also completed this quest before receiving the Served Cold quest, so this is another potential prerequisite. Another possibility is that his relationship rank has to be high enough, which can likely be done by completing one or a number of those quests. It would be useful to know which of these three quests players have completed before receiving this Served Cold quest. — ABCface 03:55, 11 December 2012 (GMT)
Actually, I just realized that I had found and picked up the wine, but I had not actually reported it to Veleth yet, since that objective is still in my quest log. So you definitely don't have to complete the Recipe for Distraction quest, though it's still possible you have to pass a certain stage of the quest. — ABCface 04:50, 11 December 2012 (GMT)
My sister just started the quest. She has done Final Descent, but not done March of the Dead. So Final Descent is the prerequisite quest. I've updated the page appropriately. 70.190.202.175 08:14, 11 December 2012 (GMT)
Thanks for the info. I think leaving the {{VN}} tag on the page for now is best, since there still seems to be some confusion about this. It may be related to disposition after all, which is why different players might have different experiences. — ABCface 19:46, 11 December 2012 (GMT)
I completed The Final Descent almost immediately upon arrival on the island. I tried numerous dialogues with Captain Veleth and Second Counselor Adril Arano, in an attempt to start the Served Cold quest. I got no mention of the quest until i had completed March of the Dead. Then, immediately after completing the last dialogue with Veleth about March of the Dead, He started the dialogue about Served Cold. So I would say that completing either March of the Dead, or Final Descent + March, is the pre-req. (Complete list of DB completed quests before getting Served Cold, in order: Dragonborn, The Final Descent, Temple Of Miraak, Fate of the Skaal, Cleansing the Stones, Source of Stalhrim, Chief of Thirsk Hall, Black Book: Winds of Change, March Of The Dead.) () Just completed March of the Dead, no dialogue to begin this quest. Haven't completed Fine Descent yet, so both are required by my guess as last time I got this quest I had completed both.--Dro'Bakha (talk) 22:31, 21 December 2012 (GMT)

I can confirm that both March of the Dead and The Final Descent need to be completed before this quest can be started. Just completed The Final Descent after March of the Dead and was instantly approached for starting this quest.--Dro'Bakha (talk) 23:30, 21 December 2012 (GMT)
Given the (still) conflicting reports, I'm still inclined to believe it has more to do with relationship rank (disposition) with Captain Veleth than the specific quest or order (the quests are likely how to raise your relationship rank with him). — ABCface 03:40, 22 December 2012 (GMT)
But then that could be said about all other quests like this. And besides that no matter how many other quests you do in Raven Rock you only get this quest after doing the two specified previously. One of which isn't even related to the Captain.--Dro'Bakha (talk) 23:53, 22 December 2012 (GMT)
This was your personal experience. A user reported in this same discussion above that they were able to receive this quest without doing March of the Dead. We need more verification. — ABCface 18:48, 23 December 2012 (GMT)
Sounds like we'll need to wait for the PC release to access the scripting through the CK for a definite answer. Based on what I've seen on this site with other quests, it does sound more like disposition. Some quests add more than others, and some don't "add", they simply set disposition to a certain value. There may be several ways to get it. Quillan (talk) 02:41, 24 December 2012 (GMT)
But in order to get the quest Veleth has to speak to you. Until March of the Dead is completed he is stuck at the farm battling Ash Spawn until you help him, thus meaning you at least require starting, if not completing, March of the Dead to get this quest.--Dro'Bakha (talk) 07:20, 26 December 2012 (GMT)
This. Basically, you HAVE to be on March of the Dead (and completed part of it) before Veleth will talk to you in any kind of normal fashion. It is impossible to talk to him without starting March of the Dead. Most likely the IP above made a mistake about which quests had been started/completed. Jeancey (talk) 21:34, 22 January 2013 (GMT)

() Update for PC and PS3. This quest has an ID of DLC2RR02. The quest with ID DLC2RR01 is March of the Dead. The Final Descent has an ID of DLC2RR03, but can be completed before either of these quests. I can confirm that March of the Dead on its own is not enough, though it'll take another run through to see if its needed at all. I started Recipe for Distraction, and still nothing, but as soon as I completed TFD and went outside, Veleth approached and gave me this quest. RFD was incomplete. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 23:55, 13 February 2013 (GMT)

The Final Descent on its own does not work. March of the Dead either on its or with Recipe for Disaster does not work. The only combination that works is TFD and MOTD (RFD is not needed). Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 23:03, 17 February 2013 (GMT)
Confirmed that Recipe for Distraction is unnecessary. I just started Served Cold, I've done March, Final Descent, An Axe to Find, First Edition and some pendants for Pain in the Necklace for Raven Rock quests. Veleth contacted me as soon as I completed Final Descent (after I talked to Crescius). I don't think this quest is triggered by Veleth's disposition, I think it's a specific quest trigger, and probably just March and Final Descent. --Morrolan (talk) 23:27, 20 February 2013 (GMT)

Fell through the floor when first entered Ashfallow.[edit]

Has anyone had this happen to them? When i first did this quest i entered ashfallow and fell through the floor into the room below, i have skyrim downloaded to my hard drive and the dlc as well so im not sure if the disk or downloaded are any different. Anyway I went upstairs to where the door to leave was and saw that the ceiling was missing and a lot of textures where as well so i left the citadel and went back in and the exact same thing happened, it did not effect the quest but it makes me worry about if the dlc had problems being downloaded or something. If anyone else have had this problem please let me know, or if anyone has any solution so i don’t have to worry about walking around solstheim and falling through the ground or something. — Unsigned comment by 70.168.15.72 (talk) at 18:03 on 7 January 2013

This sounds like a general physics glitch which occasionally happened pre-Dragonborn as well. As with all TES games, be sure to save often (not just autosaves), and when you enter a location in which this occurs just go ahead and reload. I found that it's more likely to resolve the issue if you return all the way to the main menu to load a new save rather than loading a new save from in-game, though that's based on personal experience and could have been a coincidence. — ABCface 05:13, 11 January 2013 (GMT)
On the loading new save from in-game vs. loading from the main menu: I've found that when the game loads a save on the same character in the same location as where you are when you die/manually load, it keeps some of the same state information from your current playthrough and doesn't fully load the save file, probably to speed up the load time. This means that if your current location is bugged it's nearly always a better idea to return the main menu first before loading the save (although that also means that the load will take a few seconds longer). I've tested this with repeated loads in the past. --Morrolan (talk) 23:32, 20 February 2013 (GMT)

I believe there are consequences to this quest[edit]

I may be wrong but during some testing I reloaded several saves that came after I gained access to Severin Manor each time I was attacked by either a Khajiit or an Argonian. I believe that by helping Councilor Morvayn and House Redoran the player may have activated a Dragonborn DLC script to make the player a target for at least one attack by races being exploited by the Great Houses in Morrowind. Argonians would definitely not be in favor of the exploitation of Solstheim by the Grand Council.

"Externally, House Hlaalu was strongly opposed to slavery, no doubt a side-effect of its relation with the Empire"--Sativarg (talk) 18:39, 9 March 2013 (GMT)

Ulen tomb[edit]

As a consequence of not wanting the perpetrator to know I was onto them, purely for RP reasons, I found that you don't actually have to talk to Tilisu to identify her. Provided she doesn't see you, all you need to do is get within pickpocket range of her (I was invisible as well, to make extra sure I wasn't detected). — Unsigned comment by 82.47.161.74 (talk) at 13:48 on 10 March 2013‎

I had the same experience. I did not talk to Tilisu, just sitting by the door in sneak mode when she entered the tomb. The quest updated as she passed me. —MortenOSlash (talk) 22:11, 23 March 2013 (GMT)
I have now put it into the text. —MortenOSlash (talk) 06:54, 24 March 2013 (GMT)
I left it out because I didn’t think of it as overly important – because players will probably realize that they receive a quest update. It doesn’t hurt to include it though. ☺ --Krusty (talk) 07:05, 24 March 2013 (GMT)
I see now I did not do a good job anyway, as I left several fragments of the old text in between and did not read through some of my additions well enough, so we are definitively better of with most of it reversed like you did. —MortenOSlash (talk) 11:16, 24 March 2013 (GMT)

Adril[edit]

I've just informed Adril Arano of the Tong's defeat and he's instructed me to follow him... I know what's supposed to come next, but instead of taking me to Councillor Morvayn, he's taken leave of his senses - walked uphill towards the Ebony mine and jammed himself between two barrels... he's now just standing there, making the occasional effort to dislodge himself. Any advice on getting him out... without attacking him and incurring a bounty? - Xanderen (talk) 16:49, 3 February 2017 (UTC)

Unavoidable Trespass (possibly limited to Special Edition)[edit]

In the past, entering Severin Manor to retrieve the evidence wasn't considered trespassing as long as the player avoided detection. Now it seems that stage of the quest earns you a trespass the moment you enter no matter how stealthy you are. The only way around this (that I know of) is to essentially "cheat" with console commands. If I had to guess, this change is the result of one the recent Special Edition patches near the end of 2018. That said, I sincerely hope that Bethesda didn't implement this change on purpose, especially when other quests (namely "The Raid" and both versions of "Compelling Tribute") require similar sneaky behavior and can be completed without getting any crimes added to your record. Not to mention the fact that, just like with the Riften Warehouse, you're given permission to enter the building in question.Nexus83 (talk) 16:31, 26 February 2019 (UTC)

XBOX 1 SKYRIM SERVED COLD ISSUES[edit]

I completed the entire quest for Served COLD. Killed all assassins as well as Severin at Ashfallow Citadel. The map says Ashfallow Citadel CLEARED, but I return to Arano in Raven Rock and it still says I have yet to remove all threats. He still says the same commentary as he did when leaving for Ashfallow. Has anyone else had this is issue? If so is there a fix? — Unsigned comment by 73.194.185.56 (talk) at 03:22 on 28 February 2021 (UTC)

WHO PUTS ASH YAM IN TOMBS?[edit]

Ash Yams are root vegetables so, they might as well crop anywhere with rich soil, fertilized by the decomposing dead. — Unsigned comment by Due0covid21 (talkcontribs) at 16:37 on 8 October 2023 (UTC)
