Quest Names[edit]

Quests in Daggerfall do not have natural-language "names" in the sense of other games. The only identifier is the file name (such as "A0C0XY04"). Quests should be renamed to the file name so we can keep them straight. Ex: "Daggerfall:Wayrest Painting" should be renamed "Daggerfall:S0000017". Since there is no "name" associated with quests, attempting to give them "names" is simply subjective and frought with controversy. Furthermore, since they have already been assigned unique identities (by Bethesda) as their file name, we are fools to ignore what is already present and (badly) reinvent a wheel. For example, there are several "Delivery the foo…" quests; trying to use an arbitrary (player/editor-assigned string name) will prove most confusing. --Uniblab 01:44, 26 May 2008 (EDT)

If the IDs were used in game and were visible to the player, then perhaps they would need to be included in the quest article names. But if the IDs are never seen by the player, then the IDs provide absolutely no useful information to someone who has played the game. Even if the current quest names are somewhat arbitrary, they at least provide some information that a reader is likely to be able to interpret and therefore figure out which quest is the one they're thinking of, without having to load each individual quest page.
I agree that the any internally-used quest IDs should be documented. But the appropriate way to do that is using the ID tag in the quest header. As an example, I've added the ID to Daggerfall:Wayrest Painting. It seems that should help any people who have access to the behind-the-scenes information to connect the quest page to the correct quest data. But it does not require every reader to memorize obscure ID codes in order to make use of the quest pages. --NepheleTalk 02:04, 26 May 2008 (EDT)
The trouble here is, there is no identifier at all ever exposed to the player. No identifier at all, of any kind, at any time. Daggerfall quests are very much like "Real Life"; when was the last time you double-clicked some empty space in front of you (whilst walking down the hall from your bedroom) and saw text floating in the air reading "1. Deliver the foo to bar, 2. Kill 50% of all enemy forces", or "The Great Foozle, Chapter 1" ? The only indication players have of any active quests is some text in their logbook, which is typically a small paragraph. We can't use a paragraph of text (no matter how small) for the article name, and most quests offer multiple alternative quests (the log entries can vary, the quest offer text can vary, etc, etc). But I do see your point. Scanning a list of "8798726, 3987-0, 7871159809" would make little sense to most people. The problem is how does one link to quest R0C10Y13, if that quest has three different "offer" messages, or five different log book messages? I do continue to suggest naming the article the file name, and using natural-language (i.e., English on the English wiki) as the link text, such as "Daggerfall:R0C10Y13|Yet another courier quest for random nobility". I only come to this since, as stated above, there are no "official names" associated with quests. Be this as it may, I'm certainly not going to go about renaming any quest articles anytime soon, and I doubt I'll be documenting quests right away either, but as I document factions I need to hyperlink their quests, and hence the trouble: I know the quests of each and every Faction/Npc in the game, yet trying to find the article associated with that quest is a nightmare (Why "Wayrest Painting" when "Queen Akorithi's Painting" would have been more descriptive, and seems more obvious?). At any rate, I'm not rocking any boats yet, and certainly won't undertake any unilateral action here. --Uniblab 02:23, 26 May 2008 (EDT)

Quest Hints+ Quests[edit]

I say we merge quest hints and this page so that way we don't need that spare page. If anyone has a problem with this then speak up.--Timmeh Talk 23:13, 27 October 2008 (EDT)

Needed Image - in most cases not reasonable[edit]

Since so many quests of Daggerfall have the NeedsImage tag, I wanted to point out a certain aspect for some time. Upon reading the quest walkthroughs, one will recognize most components of a quest are determined entirely randomly (questgiver, quest object(s), related NPCs, dungeons, etc.). Only some quests, mostly those of the Main Quest and some others, have constant components for that it's reasonable to provide an image. Many of these quests already have an image. So in my opinion it makes no sense to provide pictures for quests that have absolutely no informative value.--PLRDLF 15:13, 29 November 2008 (EST)

A screenshot of the kind of thing that can appear would still have value. Besides, the images aren't all about being informative - they're decorative too. –RpehTCE 01:32, 30 November 2008 (EST)

main quests need serious editing[edit]

Most if not all of the pages for the Daggerfall main quests need to be edited and cleaned up — Unsigned comment by Teotzlcoatl (talkcontribs) on 28 December 2009

You can edit all of those pages yourself, so should feel free to make any edits you feel are necessary. Making a vague statement that things need doing doesn't really help. –rpehTCE 10:03, 28 December 2009 (UTC)
One thing I wanted to change for a long time was the flow-chart of the Main-Quest, especially I wanted to merge the path of the three subplots, so that they merge into a single path which leads to the Totem Quest in the end. But since the code of this flow-chart is way too complicated, at last for me, I haven't done anything at all. Perhaps someone, who is really understanding this code-formation is able to overwork the chart.--PLRDLF 20:36, 28 December 2009 (UTC)
I put the flowchart together based on this image so if you tell me what you need changing I can do it. –rpehTCE 21:57, 28 December 2009 (UTC)
Quest corr.gif
Here is an overworked flow-chart of the Main Quest, I've changed some paths because:
  1. Although Morgiah and Barenziah can tell the player that Gortwog has the letter, he still must do Cyndassa's quest if he wants to approach Mynisiera.
  2. The Mantella Revealed quest is purely optional and if the player hasn't the required reputation he can never complete it, which has no influence on the Main-Quest.
  3. Elysana's Betrayal is started from the Mantella Revealed quest, not from the Orcish Treaty quest.
  4. As I already said, all three sub-plots must be completed to start the Totem quest.

Fantastic, thanks. I'll have a stab at changing the flowchart page tomorrow when I've got a better internet connection. –rpehTCE 13:53, 29 December 2009 (UTC)
There - let me know what you think. –rpehTCE 13:18, 30 December 2009 (UTC)
Well, done. now everything is correct, but I wonder if it possible to use colored lines, like in the flow-charts, instead of these dotted lines, they are somewhat hard to see.--PLRDLF 15:46, 30 December 2009 (UTC)
