Lucan Valerius at the counter of his shop, Riverwood Trader

Lucan Valerius is an Imperial pawnbroker, and the owner of Riverwood Trader in Riverwood. His store was robbed by Arvel the Swift, who stole an antique golden claw and retreated to Bleak Falls Barrow. Lucan will task you with retrieving it.

He wears a set of lower class clothes and a pair of boots. He carries the key to Riverwood Trader as well as a selection of common items and gold. He wields an iron dagger and an iron mace.

Quest-Related Dialogue[edit]

The Golden Claw[edit]

When you enter the Riverwood Trader for the first time, you can witness an argument between Lucan and his sister Camilla regarding the stolen golden claw:

Camilla: "Well one of us has to do something!"
Lucan: "I said no! No adventures, no theatrics, no thief-chasing!"
Camilla: "Well what are you going to do then, huh? Let's hear it!"
Lucan: "We are done talking about this. Oh, a customer. Sorry you had to hear that."

His greetings before talking to him about it:

"I better get back to cleaning the store. What a mess."
"Damn thieves. As if things weren't bad enough."
"I don't know what you overheard, but the Riverwood Trader is still open. Feel free to shop."

If you ask him about the argument:

Did something happen?
"Yes, we did have a bit of a... break-in. But we still have plenty to sell. Robbers were only after one thing. An ornament, solid gold. In the shape of a dragon's claw."
I could help you get the claw back.
"You could? I've got some coin coming in from my last shipment. It's yours if you bring my claw back. If you're going after those thieves, you should head to Bleak Falls Barrow, northeast of town."

Camilla will then question Lucan's plan of sending you to reacquire the claw:

Camilla: "So this is your plan, Lucan?"
Lucan: "Yes. So now you don't have to go, do you?"
Camilla: "Oh really? Well I think your new helper here needs a guide."
Lucan: "Wh- no... I.... Oh, by the Eight, fine. But only to the edge of town!"

His greetings while the quest is ongoing:

"Don't let my sister do anything foolish."
"The sooner you find the claw, the sooner our lives can get back to normal."
"Show those thieves not to steal from Lucan Valerius!"
"I'll need to lock up the store. Thank you so much for agreeing to help us."
"I should lock up the store now. Thank you again."

When you return with the claw:

I found the golden claw.
"You found it? Ha ha ha. There it is. Strange... it seems smaller than I remember. Funny thing, huh? I'm going to put this back where it belongs. I'll never forget this. You've done a great thing for me and my sister."

If Camilla is murdered?:

"Thanks. I guess this was the least you could do after what happened to Camilla."

If Camilla is dead:

"Thanks. I only wish Camilla was here to see it. Here, take this. You've done a good thing for the Riverwood Trader."

Dialogue[edit]

His greetings:

"I know some of it looks like junk, but everything's a treasure in the right light."
"We carry just about anything you could need..."
"My sister Camilla or I will be happy to help you."
"The Riverwood Trader is everything you need in a general store."
"Thank you so much for taking care of those thieves. The Riverwood Trader is back to the way it used to be!"

When spoken to:

Do you sell spells?
"I think I have a few old spell books laying about. If you want more, you'll have to go to the College of Winterhold."

Conversations[edit]

After the completion of the quest The Golden Claw, the two siblings can be seen having a conversation about the goods they sell. They will pick between one of three available dialogues:

Dialogue
Camilla: "Lucan, we don't sell silver buckles, do we? One of the customers was asking."
Lucan: "No, dear sister. We do not."
Camilla: "Hmm. All right. Do you think... maybe we should?"
Lucan: "That's really not at the top of my list, no. Please, Camilla, I need you to focus."
Camilla: "Of course, Lucan. Of course. I was just, well... Never mind."
Camilla: "We don't sell any imports from Summerset Isle, do we, Lucan?"
Lucan: "I'm afraid not."
Camilla: "Well, I was thinking... we should. We could stock all kinds of specialty items. You know, to cater to some of our more.... 'eclectic' customers."
Lucan: "Dear sister, we talked about this sort of thing before. We sell dry goods, nothing more, nothing less."
Camilla: "Okay, okay. Just trying make this place a little less... boring."
Camilla: "Lucan, I was thinking we should have a grand sale. Lower the prices by half, maybe get some jugglers. We could attract lots of new customers."
Lucan: "A sale? To attract new customers? Camilla, everyone in Riverwood already shops here. There are no more customers."
Camilla: "Hmmm... Well, maybe we could go on a sort of trip. Take the wares on the road. Get some new customers."
Lucan: "Camilla, really? You don't have better things to do? Because I could certainly find quite a few tasks..."
Camilla: "I know, I know. My head's in the clouds again. Just... forget I said anything."

Notes[edit]

  • If Lucan dies, his sister Camilla Valerius will take over the store.
  • Contrary to what Lucan says, Bleak Falls Barrow is west of Riverwood.

Bugs[edit]

  • If you invest 500 gold into his shop (using the Investor perk), it adds 10,000 gold instead of 500 gold to his inventory.
